I honestly had the whole lil' "blackface-scene" from "Silver Streak" (w/ Gene Wilder & Richard Pryor) in-mind when I was typing my comment, I only mentioned "Soul Man" because I could remember the title off-hand ;-) I believe there WAS some lil' uproar over the whole "Silver Streak"-deal, when the movie was originally released, but nothing like the constant bitching and moaning of the "2000's", as it were.

I didn't think he acted "Black". I think he did an excellent job as a somewhat delusional, egotiscal actor who is getting into what he thinks a black man would behave.  My favorite part of the movie was after the director was killed and he couldn't get out of character, but he was scared.

Not as prestigious as the Academy Award Nomination, but he also received a Golden Globe Nomination in the same category, Best Supporting Actor.

It's Hollywood giving credit where credit is due. Not all Nominations for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Picture, Best Director, etc. have to be for a drama. Some people just want to be entertained, and isn't that what movies were founded on? Not every actor has to take on a serious role to demonstrate superior acting abilities.
