Just becuase the Russians had an iron fisted dictator doesn't mean individual Russians can't love their contry, as well as fight and die for it. Stalin did little for his people, he'd say "burn your house field and everything you can't carry, what your starving without your field, tough luck *Vodka Belch*.

I'm honestly unsure of whether or not the defense of Russia was a textbook example of defensive warfare and that Stalin's plan to buy time was his stroke of genius in halting the Nazi armies, or whether Stalin was a crazed paranoid autocrat who was conveniently gifted with the overwhelming might and reserves of the Russian people, whom he was able to throw again and again into the maw of the lion until the German army finally ground to a halt.

@Senjhin Do not give any credit to Stalin, give credit to General Zhukov and his generals and their armies. not to Stalin who did not know how to fight in a war. The only thing Stalin did was consult with his generals, and always tell the Soviet people words of encouragment to lift up the spirits of the people. Stalin was not a genius, I say this to you as a Russian, and by the way Stalin is not Russian, he is a Georgian-Jew from the Former Soviet Republic of Georgia.

2 million russian civilians? where did you get this number? even wikipedia tells: "During this period 6.8 million Soviet soldiers were killed and 4.4 million died in captivity.[2] The Soviet Union lost 26.6 million men and women in total.[3]"

though it's still hard to count precisely (if it's possible at all)

26.6 - 6.8 - 4.4 = 15.4 mln

Even though they had powerful forces at their disposal the Nazis SOOO underestimated all their opponents. They believed their own propaganda, which was very effective btw...

Think about what the world might be like if the Nazi's had won the Battle of Stalingrad and the Battle of Russia. First they would have the oil supply at Baku, second they would have Russian industry east of the Urals, third, they would have the food supply of the Ukraine, and finally they would have been able to concentrate their forces on the Western Front at Normandy. At the very least, it would have given them time to develop WMD. Why we might even be living under the jackboot of G. Bush!

That is right, because the Nazis lost we do not live under the jack boot of Bushy Junior, but because the communists won we live under the hammer and sickle of Barrack Hussein. I loathe Bushy Junior, but comments about him have nothing to do with World War 2. A Nazi WW2 win over Russia would not have changed history much except the Cold War would have been USA vs Nazis instead of USA vs commies. Hitler had many other problems in WW2 besides just Stalingrad, so that alone did not doom him.

@MRobert21 if NAZI germany win the battle against SU germany have control together with Japan over half of the world territory (Russia,china,whole eastasia,north afrika europe,arabic, persia and so on)

and its only a matter of time that they landed in new york and LA.

@am1966ath Stalin does not equal ALL the Soviet peoples. Don't defile the sacrifices of millions by the notion of one, mentally ill, individual. The peoples and the armies of the USSR defeated Nazism in spite of Stalin.

But they had nothing to say at this time..the mentally Ill Georgian had all to say and he also took most of the credit for the victory. But Im happy that the russians came as far as Berlin only..and despite the russian sacrifice, I dont think that the poles or the hungarians are grateful for being liberated by them as the price was to live behind the iron curtain for 40years.

stalin wants germany to pay for the loses of russia,but the west dont accept,selfishly,and the 1st to make some aggresion and very selfish remarks against stalin and russia...

it was the west provoking stalin coz stalin hates profiteers and unequality...

the west only cares alot for the rich and profiteers while care less for the weak and the poor...

@teslagod2003 Communism was a new form of society, utterly distasteful for all other people except intellectual fanatics and workers who saw this as "workers paradise" however the living standards remained low and in the 60 and 70S they were bypassed by the western world. There fore the ban on international travel for soviet citizens in general. When it coem to neighbour, the soviet state started havin an appetite for thts neigbouring states(Moldavia,Finnland)

The only reason they were bypassed, because the US and the UK did everyting they cud to make the rest of the world to go against the USSR, don't trade with them, etc. and you know why? coz they were scared of the USSR! And trust me - I was born in USSR - the life what it was way better than the life they have in Russia these days. May be for those who had different political views, etc it wasnt a heaven, but for most of the people it was just fine!

@oavel24 Look, that people have a low standard of living doesn t mean that the people were stupid. The russians were highly educated and many were also very cultivated but on my visit in 1975, I was amazed by the lack of consumer goods and the giant barter trade taking place in the street. What I understand today, Russia is a jungle were the strong takes averything and drives a mercedes and many others live in slums.

@MRobert21 ofcourse,stalingrad didnt kill many of his best troops that could annihilate the west,it is in russia that germany lost most of its most vital forces,troops,tanks,weapons,an­d many more,that could have been used to annihilate the rest of the world...

You need to read a book before make such silly comments westerner without any understanding of Russian history or Geography. A lot of fighting was done on warm, desert.steppes and the subtropical south where Italy tried to invade. Most of Russian famous battles where against enemies on all sides and environments.

@Ultima770 really,the united people or iraq were beaten by USA due to a sheer fact that iraq has no real ability to go to war,since they were still being undermined after the 1st persian gulf war,on the 2nd gulf war,iraqis fully united against the most corrupt and evil invaders of all time,yet they were beaten,they united but still beaten...

japan was a very united nation,but still beaten in pacific war...

war will never be just about 1 thing nor easily predicted...
