Bought mine - 1 month ago - Went to New York - LOVED IT!! Worked great..... Bus Tours - MET - Park - Night Shots --- CA mode did very well at night. Highly recommend this camera.
Canon has ruined what would have been a perfect camera by making this 18mp.... if this was a 12-14mp camera with same sensory technology...the image quality would be so much better, and images wouldn't be soft at 100%. High iso performance would also be improved along with dynamic range.
@samuraimacisthebest - go to the Custom Function setting, Group III, Setting 6. Here you can choose which AF modes are available. I suspect Spot and Zone AF are not enabled.
BEFORE purchasing this camera, or dreaming about this camera, please do yourself a favor and google darwin wiggett 7d. Read the detailed review and the comments.
Sadly, this potentially great camera was ruined by the marketing muppeteers at Canon who elected to cram too many megapixels on the small APS-C sensor, thus compromising the purity of the sensel signal.
If the 7D would have launched as a 10mp camera, the 7D would have been incredible. So close, yet so far.
XD wish it had the basic shooting modes :( XD well im going to get the canon 40d but i wish the canon 40d was even more weather proof :( i want it to be able to be dropped in water and survive perfectly :(
It depends. Cramming that number of pixels in an APS-C size sensor makes the image a little bit softer rather than tack sharp. But this is unnoticeable, but evident for Pros.
If you want good clean sound recording on digital SLR cameras, you need to go third party. I'm using a Zoom H4n and/or Edirol R-09. The Zoom is used with a redhead windscreen and depending on situaiton, a lavlier mic or Rode NTG-1.
Use the camera sound track as a guide track for syncing later.
Philip Bloom pretty much has it covered now. Wanted to see moire patterns, high ISO tests compared to the Mark II, different frame rates conformed to 24p, and I really wanted to know for sure that there would be no cadence.
Speak for yourself. I want my camera to be a camera. Video is secondary, and if I want to record video rather than take photos I'll use a dedicated HD camera like the Sony SR11.
If you're interested in video over photos than you can save about $800 dollars by purchasing the video cam I mentioned above.
Sorry, this is a filmmaker's dream camera. The SR11 absolutely cannot compare in any possible way. I went from a Sony PMW-EX1 to a Canon 5D Mark II and couldn't have been more happy (minus the frame rate issue). Now the 7D is going to change the filmmaking world. Video is primary. I'll use my Mark II for photos, thank you very much.
I have the SR12 and its not very good, bad low light performance, very slow auto focus etc, the 7D is much better and can shoot 8fps, I'll be waiting for Canon to release the next EOS, maybe 6D or 1Ds mkIV, cant wait
I know 8fps is for stills and I own an SR12, a serious filmmaker would not recommend a SR11 and serious filmmakers do use DSLR's ever heard of the Canon 5DmkII, well it is a full frame cam that is excellent for making timelapse sequences in very low light
I got some footage on my channel of the 7D plus a tutorial check it out

Spot and zone focus doesn't work on my 7D. There are not selectable! Can someone please help me? THANKS!
samuraimacisthebest 2 years ago
You could always perhaps get a split circle focus screen and replace it.
Thats the thing i really miss in digital cameras.
I know you can get them for older eos Dslrs so they might not be out yet for 7d.

AMAZING,
18 MP 14 BITS 8 Images/s
better than nikon cause when you turn on 14bits on nikon, you can only 3images/s

the camera is starting to look more like a Nikon. with the added buttons.

If canon-nikon war is your cup of tea, here's a fun fact for you:
Canon actually was the one who incorporated the "MODE DIAL" and was ever since present on all Nikon DSLRs.

There's more info on today's blog about the EOS 7D.
@esoterician - what do you want to know about the video features?

hey i was thinking the same thing!
but the only letdown is the sound quality of the 7D...
any suggestions? :)

We use a Sennheiser MKH-60 and record onto a Zoom H4n. Cameras aren't for recording audio anyway :)
esotericsean 2 years ago
nicee i've been checking out your vids,
is there a specific lens you use with your 5D mark 2?
im considering getting a macro for my closeup shots..
HisNameWasRobin 2 years ago
I almost always keep my 16-35 on my Mark II, though I have a couple other lenses (50 1.8, 28-135). What lens(es) do you have?
esotericsean 2 years ago
i HAD a 400D with the standard 18-55 but some prick managed to steal it from me.
obviously the 7D will be an improved replacement for my long lost 400D

Well, just want to say that your definition of a serious filmmaker must be someone awfully important.
They used the 5D Mark II on Iron Man 2 and are using it on the last 2 Harry Potter films. How much more of a serious filmmaker can you get?
