What I made of it is that Karl Stefanovic is trying to make his name as a journalist, and Germaine Greer is trying to convince the wolrd her opinion matters. both failed miserably.
What would she rather us hide our dangerous creatures from the world so that people can come over and touch a lion fish and die in a few minutes, yeah rather let them know what theyre in for. Steve irwin did so much for our country she is a disgrace to the australian people not carl stefanovic.
Australian journalism or sensationalism has been appalling for a long time. Just take a look at The Chaser's War on Everything. They take the piss out of the way these shows dramatise and portray their stories.
I always hate they way they present in this condescending tone like they are above everyone else.
If anyone thinks A Current Affair is a journalist show or a neutral piece of news on tv is blind. It is violently left wing pseudo-journalism hosted by dimwitted public figures with no fact gathering ability whatsoever. If you want real journalism, watch australias abc presenter laurie oakes. He knows his shit.
Great vid. I do, however, disagree with you point that both A Current Affair and that interviewer have (even occasionally) any credibility. The show and its presenters are entirely motivated by ratings and in pandering to the sympathy of Australia's working class. Greer is right in condemning the exploitation of animals on which Irwin's fame was predicated. His death was terrible and his conservative work to be lauded, his show, however, was a travesty. On that point, Greer is quite right.
I think that this woman has a very warped view of reality. Obviously her views are going to be shared by others and everyone is entitled to their own opinion but when push comes to shove she made a very derogatory and to a degree false article about a man who did his best for what he loved. Germaine, as you are entitled to your opinion, so am I. You are very narrow minded old bag who is obviously just out for attention. Stay in England!!!!
I hate a current affair, I hope this show dies along with our baby boomers. It is mentality such as this that will always cause people like Greer to move their careers elsewhere. She could have done a lot of good in this country
If the Aussies were so in mourning about his death and vowing to continue his 'legacy', then why the hell did so many people go and kill stingrays all around Australia during the following weeks, as well as many dressing up in stingray outfits for halloween. It makes a mockery of the 'conservation' message he supposedly stood for. While I don't agree with G.G. on all points here, she does make a case to think about.
Irwin was not a god, he was a typical mediocre australian that used wildlife for his own gains. The more i read comments from Australians (like the insecure woman hater below) the more i think that Australians might be a strong rival for the US for the dumbest/most illiterate/ignorant/hated country in the world.
I don't think its even an issue of emotion versus good journalism. He was obviously acting out what he he thinks the lynch mob feels. I have no doubt channel 9 put him up to it, to give some semblance of a pulse to their unenviable ratings.
Karl does what Karl does best, which is to side with what he thinks is safely popular public opinion in Australia. He is not a journalist, but a smarmy showpony trotted out by ACA to foist unintelligent diatribe and bully out alternative opinion.
I also think Karl owes viewers an apology for his outburst. Greer's timing was bad but Karl hung himself before he even gave Greer a chance too. He allowed his emotions to get the better of him and as a result made himself look unprofessional on this occasion.
Steve Irwin was simpy the best at what he did. He was very well trained with animals. I have watched most of the Crockadile Hunter shows, and I never saw him handle an animal with anything but kindness. Now as for Ms. Greer. . . To speak ill of the dead before the family even has a chance to say goodbye and put then to rest is awful. At the very least she owes the Irwin family a public apology for her poor timing in writing her article.
Umm yes I have been living in Australia for a while and have met many Australians who supported Steve and many who did not. Karl was most certainly not displaying what every Aussie was thinking judging by above comments. If you were a journalist you would know Karl is there to be objective and ask questions. If he wants to be John Laws or Alan Jones then he should get himself a radio show. His behaviour in this interview was bizarre and on this occasion not professional what ever his own views.
Well done Karl!! Germaine Greer is a complete twit, a germ on this planet that should eradicated asap. I dont balme Karl for losing his cool in this interveiw with theis waprped woman. He was only displaying what EVERY fair dinkum Aussie was thinking. And as for the person narrating this video, well obviusly you're not Australian and have no idea of the work Steve Irwin put into wildlife conservation, because if you did, you would most probably agree with Karls comments during the interview.
It's funny that a person who clearly knows very little about Australia's history is so quick to jump the gun and condemn a cultural icon as un-Australian. Greer is much more then just a 'waprped' woman - not to measure them against each other but in 100 years time I can guarantee that it's not Steve Irwin's biography that kid's are researching for school projects but the biography of a women who is largely responsible for the gender equality that many Australians simply take for granted.
Any teacher that wants kids learning about this idiot woman deserves to be sacked...Unless they are teaching the kids on "What NOT to be when I grow up". If my kid came home and was doing an assignment on this stupid woman I can tell you now, I'd let them do it, but I'd make sure that my kid clearly shows bitter and twisted this woman really is and point out a true Aussie woman icon...Such as Terri Irwin. And IF you're implying that I know "very little" about Australia's history, just try me.
Well, without Wikipedia-ing it, what can you tell me about how Germaine Greer has contributed to society, because she HAS contributed and if you can't give me at least three things then that shows just how little you know.
Oh, and I hate to be the one to break this to you but Terri Irwin is American - so much for being an Australian icon.
Cont. As a 16 year old I can proudly say that I look up to women like Edith Cowan, Fiona Wood and Emma Constance Stone - all women who have sought to be highly educated individuals rather then relying on the incomes of their successful husbands to support them financially and career-wise as a certain American woman seems to have done . . .
Ok...Terri Irwin IS American, but over there, she is considered an Assie icon, and for an American to call a "
fellow American" an Aussie icon, thats saying something. As for Edith, her campaigns for womens rights did the women of this country proud. Fiona Woods, her ways of helping burns victims i beleive areseond to none and she deserves all the praise she gets. Emma Constance Stone, proved that not only men can be medically minded.
3 things Germaine Greer has done - whinge, bitch and moan, like the annoying dog she is. She is an embarresment to this country. And if you think she is so high and mighty for women and all that, just do some research on some of the comments she made about Princess Diana..something along thie lines of "moron, attention seeking" See, this women just loves bagging out dead people who were more popular and well-liked and cannot defend themselves.
My comments weren't really born from an undying love of Germaine Greer but more from my unhappiness that Australia tends to value the 'Aussie battler' rather then the intellectual. I hold firm on my view that Greer's radical actions of the last century have contributed to the closing of the gap between men and women but I understand completely how her badly-timed comments have upset many who were greatly moved by the death of a celebrity. That's all I have to say on the matter.
That presenter is a total retard and is upset because germaine greer put him in his place. Germaine was right, stever irwin deserved to die for harrasing and stalking animals. He wanted to play with dangerous animals and the danger came right to him. Germaine is keeping it real and telling it like it is. Period. rot in hell 'croc hunter' (animal abuser and cash milker)
Current Affair? It's tabloid, moron. It's moralizing, sensationalist propaganda and Steve Irwin was the kind of wild kingdom goof it likes to promote as being environmental. Asking Germaine Greer to name one person to say bad things about a dead clown is a classic sucker punch. But Greer is an old liberal windbag who insists on pontificating when all she had to do, in reply, is ask the interviewer to name Steve Irwin's greatest environmental achievement. That's sure to get a big laugh.
...........I have nothing against him tho and am glad that he was around to do so many great things--he just needed to think before acting, a lot of the time. hope this doesnt offend anyone, coz it isnt meant to.
i dont find that offending even though i want to. but yeah when i watched some of his tv shows he didnt really have self control. when he sees something he wud jsut spinr up to it syaing tiger snake ior something. this isnt meant ot offend anyone im just syanig he enver had a chance to think before he acted.
yeah, i think u said that quite well. he was basically a great guy who didnt always think before he acted--he didnt deserve to be criticised like that straight after his death tho; I think Greer can be a bit of a callous bitch at times! but yeah, he lacked self-control and that messed him up a bit unfortunately.
i was amazed at how pissed off the guy got with her. but i heard so many bad comments after his death all over youtube. such as release the tape terri u whore we all need to luagh at something.
hahah that 1 less fucked up aussie.
i couldnt imagine what she went through if she saw all those mssages.
if the people who wrote those. iff someone they know dies say their dad. people send him letters saying haha that 1 less retard in this world. then they wud know how terri felt.
...........He did a lot of stupid things, and for that I think he represented Australia in a bad light and made us look like fools (im an Aussie). He loved animals, he did heaps for them and was always trying to help, but I think he was probably just clueless as to when to draw the line and stop invading the spaces of such vicious animals. Crocs are not safe to be around, and the fact that he dangled his newborn son in front of one, just shows how stupid he could be...................
yes, it follows that he would pay his american employees in american dollars. Of course Sunshine Coast tourism brought in some dough but it is shit all compared to money that poured in to the US when he moved there.
I agree, he was a really bad interviewer! he shouldnt have been allowed to say all those things about her, even if he thought she was a cow. I dont think Steve was a bad guy, and I know he cared for animals, but he was an idiot in some cases. Firstly, he always tried to piss animals off to get a reaction, and you can see that in the way he treats the croc. He did the same with the stingray that killed him, even tho he knew it was dangerous and it warned him to steer clear.......
I think Today Tonight and A Current Affair would have something to say about them not being real journalism but yes I agree that his comment was pretty stupid. William
what a stupid comment usually about aussie battlers australian journalism is a bit more deep that that. i mean real journalism not today tonight and a current affair dont count there mostly just human intrest stories. germaine greer should keep her comments about australia to herself.
Oh, just out of interest, as I don't live in Australia, I know Germaine's comments got a lot of attention but did this piece of journalism cause much comment?
I agree with you there. The "bitter and twisted" comment was absurd. Gotta say I agree with Germaine on many of her comments.. but I'm not criticising him because of my views. As you say it's bad journalism. Well said there.
We are talking about Channel Nine and we are talking about a very silly current affair program! Much like Today Tonight. As far as Germaine's comments. I still firmly stand by her. She is the intelect here! Sense of loss.what bull!?
I think he was using aggressive journalism on a subject which is a sensitive and normally taboo, and it clearly didn't work. It was more like a argument down the pub :)
I originaly thought he was more amenable than the rival morning presenter on the other network. Now I have noticed this person being very biased during interviews so much so they were forced to apologise to a politition they had interviewed last week, due to public outcry. Seeing this interview only confirms my distaste for this type of rudeness under the guise of journalism. Bring back news where the facts are all we get and personal opinion is left to the viewer.
If you want to see quality journalism DON'T watch A Current Affair. It is a program that always takes a side and usually only tells that one side. It is a foot in door / home invassion journalism program, I can't believe that you said it usually has good content it is sensationalism at it's worst. BTW Germain Greer is the biggest disgrace to Australia, she has no tact or social graces.
Lol, I was being kind to A Current Affair. Way too kind. Even worse is Today Tonight. I said that at times it is good. Certainly entertaining and though I know it takes side that presenter really did take the piss. I thought it was a spoof at first. Lol x
Carl Stefanivic should stick to the today show, where he can state his opinions till the cows come home. "I said that at times it is good", I must have missed that night. You are soooo right Today Tonight gives ACA credibility. Watching it again, Carl really hates Germain by the looks of things.
Lol I know I love it. It's one hell of a bitch fight between the two of them. Cracks me up each time. Maybe they had a relationship or maybe not. Lol x
No, I think Carl feels the same way about Germain as the majority of Australians do. He just said what we all want to say to her, unfortunately this made him look like an idiot in the world of journalism.
Yay, weather you agree with Greer or the presenter, it is not the presenter's job to get all defensive and give an opinion on what he thinks Australians think or that her views are bitter. It's up to the viewers to make up their own minds. Allow the presenter to let Greer hang herself. By getting so personally involved he takes credibility away from the whole interview. Lack of neutrality is one think but blatantly giving your views and claiming you speak on behalf of all Australians is another.
How would she have us move crocs? Holding their hands?
As for A Current Affair, they are never neutral. They always take a side.
And the interviewer was saying what we were all thinking. Steve was closer to Australians' hearts than any of us realised till he died.
If I had been in his position, I would have said similar things because its obvious she has either never watched steves show and knows nothing about him, or she is just trying to get attention.
Germaine, go back in your hole and die seriously!

jeffstunes you sum up how I feel entirely about it. Thanks for that.

I think he was using aggressive journalism on a subject which is a sensitive and normally taboo, and it clearly didn't work. It was more like a argument down the pub :)

more 'quality' journalism from australia's current affairs programs.

I agree on what you say he should be = to both and stay neutral.
But I must say steve even touched a lot of Spaniards hearts when he died...

Wow. That was a shoddy way to conduct an interview.

Wow ~ I disagree with Ms. Greer too, but you have some good points.

Hmmm, I wonder how many people will actually look at your Points and not simply go off half cocked? I"m sharing this to see what happens.
