Wow snow in cali? I think it would have been easier to push it in..haha. But i know how it feels to drive a rwd car in the snow..sucks even more with summer tires.
I have the identical car (except supercharged) and living in NYC, I can say that even with the factory limited-slip diff, driving in the snow on summer tires is a NO-GO.
This and the space (or lack there of) is the only reason I don't own a miata...rochester winters are much worse than this, lol, RWD die here hardcore..
you should have seen what i saw the lads do last saturday, it was snowed up like hell and they had to move one of the old mini's, so 12 of them got together and just lifted the thing off the ground and carried it down the road! xD
the bloody thing wouldn't have been able to move in that snow!
@AgentLinkDark They are not the worst cars in the snow ever, dude. I could name like 20 cars that are worse at a minimum. With snow tires almost any car is competent in the snow, leading me to assume you must have really crappy snow tires (all seasons). And the Miata is not an all-wheel steering car. That'd be sort of the antithesis of the whole MX-5 philosophy. I don't know where you obtained that information.
@swagger93 i never said they were all wheel steering ( 0_o wuuut?..), i dont know if you have ever driven one in the winter but its almost like you are no longer turning the wheel where you want the front of the car to go but swinging the ass end around a pivot point. ....... perma-drift mode.

@swagger93 The Miata is terrible in the snow buddy. The engine is longitudinally mounted and the thing is rear wheel drive with NO weight in the back of it. It doesn't matter if you even have chains on the rear wheels, the thing is weighted towards the front which physically changes the ability of the rear wheels to bite in a snowy situation. This thing won't get out of it's own way with even a dusting on the road where I live.
why do everyone you see in these videos just step harder on the gas when the wheels spin? the key is going SLOW enough to avoid losing the grip. accelerate like you're ... i was going to say driving on eggshells but somehow that didn't seem right.

We were having fun, so traction wasn't the main idea at this point.
And to the guy who said we burnt the clutch, the clutch was engaged the entire time, so there was no clutch burning involved. We know how to get the car unstuck, but this was much more fun, and made for a better video. :P
Congrats! you just burnt your clutch, damaged your tyres and probably let everyone know you can't drive. You are supposed to give small taps of throttle at regular intervals, which will create a swing effect, getting you out of any stuck situation. Also parking it on a slight uphill probably didnt help you get out. Oh and dumbass with the camera: try giving the poor guy a helpful push!!
It'd be easier to just push that... How funny. I live off lake michigan where we get storms out of nowhere and I see people in mustangs doing this on the regular. I'll never understand why people buy cars taht aren't functional in their weather. Makes great entertainment though.

My fried had bought the car in LA (because he wanted a Miata from somewhere where salt wasn't used on the roads on a regular basis), and then he drove it back to Utah. The car had summer tires on it, hence the shenanigans. Yes we could have pushed it, but like you said: entertainment factor :)

these cars actualy have a sensor where when it detects the smallest amout of snow the car shifts stearing from the front wheels to the rear
its the weirdest shit, i dunno

Everyone saying that he sucks at driving has obviously never experienced the joy of spinning around in the snow when the parking lot is empty.
Besides, I think he did a pretty good job driving a Miata with summer tires in the slush.
I'd clear off all the snow before driving it though!
