I'm not sure your analogy stands up. Gravity & mass were known to be related, thus we knew Black wholes could exist. Therefore the existence of black wholes was based on pre-existing evidence & not baseless speculation.
I'd like to see the replies to this. Good video, but you are missing one thing about the hypothesis. It is supposed to be an educated guess, yes a guess, but it is supposed to be backed by research. If a scientist just came up with a random hypothesis that the Earth's orbit was susptained by fat peoples' farts, she would likely not recieve any funding to test it (well, accept perhaps from young earth creationists).
But you are right that absence of evidence is not evidence of absensce.
So your saying that could be a figment of your imgination .. I like it.

The original Hypothesis of Black Holes came from examining
the Theory of Relativity,
Before then, most scientists did not believe that Gravity affected Light.
Any Hypothesis will be based on the Experience of the Person who makes it.
So in effect, any Hypothesis is based on previously known facts to a degree.

I recall reading that the idea of black holes was proposed back in the 1800's

Einstein's Theory of Special Relativity was published in 1905,
so in the late 1800's many people were questioning the Newtonian Physics.
So it is possible that you are correct.
But the actual Hypothesis that was tested came afterwards.
Robert Heinlein was question by the Government because of one of his stories. They thought he knew about the Manhattan Project because of his story.

John Michell in 1783 first proposed the idea.
The idea of nuclear weapons is not a difficult idea to come up with. Once you know about the energy released by atomic decay, it follows logically.

I am not an expert in Physics History.
I admit I may be wrong on some things.

The basic point is this.
You have no evidence for the existence
of something that could be real.
You go out and look for evidence
to prove or disprove it's existence,
instead of just saying it does not exist.
There are some people who just deny
the possibilty of the existence of
anything for which there is no evidence.

Who first came up with the Hypothesis does not invalidate my point.

I have simplified it a bit,
but I did state that the Hypothesis
had no evidence against it.

There is also one brance of Science
that people usually ignore
or do not consider a Science
where it does not matter.
It is also what I have a Degree in.
Mathematics.
