Does anybody know what those swords are called? They remind me a great deal of Roman Spatha with their hilt and blade design.

To an earlier comment: Using the flat of the axe blade is a defensive technique used to parry an attack.

What is truly impressive is the sword and buckler style shown at 0:54. You see that in medieval manuals but this is my first time seeing it done.

This is an awsome video of an amazing martial art. I hope more people learn of this art in the future.

Actualy, I think the Axe flourish looked like crap. Watch again and count how many times the blade is turned on it's Flat when passing through where an opponent would have been. He would not have cut anything. Maybe spanked his enemy with the side of the axe, but that's it.

Losdruid, I'm sorry if I was confusing. Take a close look at the axe play. A 4:47 he swings the FLAT of the axe head instead of the EDGE. It is even easier to see at 4:50 because the FLAT of the blade flashes light at the camera. If all of that is too fast, just watch the slow motion part at 4:58. It doesn't matter that both edges of the axe are sharp if you are striking with the flat. I have a two edged sword. Will I cut you if I slapped you with the flat of my blade?

Of course you could easily counter attack an infantryman with such a big axe, but the possibility to survive such a thrust, is very low and actually the one who carried the big axe, of course knew that he had to be careful during battle, that's why he moved permanent, to avoid sword blows
