Also agree about Margaret & Nucky coupling. There was a scene with Nucky grabbing a bottle of birth control from her bathroom and throwing it against a mirror or something, then they argued. It was SOOO fuck1ng boring! Not worth putting onscreen at all. But Angela was a Princeton Bohemian artist & lesbian in the 20's? I wanted to see how society reacted to her & her lover at that time period but as soon as we saw the lover they were both killed by Manny.
Agreed with the interview. Pitt was amazing in his gangster role. I feel like he MADE the show. I'm starting to wonder who the producers are trying to gear this show towards because it's like they got rid of younger actors all in exchange for old men. A lot of younger guys related to Pitt, Shannon, Angela. Also, I think the people who want 2 see Capone's story emerge are just old men from that era because we can wikipedia Capone & know.
Agree with every aspect of this review, what a let down the whole series. My only motivation for the next season is that we may get to see more of luciano and al capones character development, whether that keeps my attention is another thing. Really enjoy your reviews and looking forward to your game of thrones segment in April.
jimmy was an amateur who was manipulated into assuming a position that was way over his head. Jimmy was a great hitman, but he didn't know how to manipulate the situation quite like nucky did. Nucky never killed anybody until jimmy, he didn't have to with his brains and connections. Jimmy couldn't emulate that. Who could blame him, he was still young. Like nucky said, "the pups have grown claws," but they lacked the experience of the older generation.
Also your reviews kick ass your very intelligent and i appreciate the passion you have put into the reviews i am also let down by this season. Anyway thankyou for your vids i have enjoyed them.
I agree they have spun out this margaret thing and its gone no where the jimmy storyline has kept me interested they could have spun that out longer than the margaret thing and held my interest.. my point is why is she still there and why is jimmy gone.. i understand the whole shakespearian ending but..... he added too the story i would have liked too have seen him pull his shit together and become a real contender too nucky then get killed off maybe season 5ish..
I don't hate Margaret as much as you. She is a substantial hypocrite, but women had fewer options in those days. I see her more as an early Carmella Soprano; someone who really likes the life her mate's gangsterism brings her and her children, but has occasional pangs of conscience and uses religion to absolve herself. Don't tell me her priest dosen't know the score; he hears confessions every week, including those MadMen confessions where people are confessing OTHER people's sins.
Larry, don't stop your BWE reviews. I look forward to them, dude! Also, I don't quite agree with your comments about Margaret. I mean, she's a female & an immigrant in the 20's. Her status offers some privilege (she's a white woman involved with a wealthy man), but those privileges are limited. She just got the right to vote & if she were to choose to be on her own, she'd have a tough time. She's not looking to be a hero, she just wants to survive (and stay on a righteous catholic path)!
With Van Alden moving to Cicero, it means they are going to develop Al Capone's character. But I'm not a fan of how Capone is written in this series. I was expecting a "They killed my nigga Ned" moment from ya but the writing was on the wall he was gonna go when he pushed homeboy off the railing.
Overall I wish they did not kill Jimmy. I respect their decision to take risks however and realize that this show still has many more interesting dynamics to delve into.
7. Margaret is now an opposing force against Nucky. If they brink back her character into the intelligent, progressive woman she was at the beginning of Boardwalk Empire instead of the nagging, wining housewife of Nucky she turned to into this season. I could see her character becoming interesting. Plus the love interest between Owen and Margaret will probably spark again.
6. More of a focus on Lansky would be interesting. He is obviously intelligent and more of the deceitful dynamics between him and Rothstein would play out very well. Luciano, however, continues to be bore.
4. Manny is still alive! A great character, who I believe was not used to his potential this season. Hopefully, the producers will find an interesting direction for him next.
5. Gillian will not have nearly as much screen time and Eli will be gone in jail. Good these are removing characters from the storyline that many viewers were not a fan of.
3. Chalky White and Arnold Rothstein are still characters on the show! I believe these are two severely underused characters, who are great when they are on the screen. Sorry to say, but the killing of Jimmy actually makes way to focus on the stories of these characters. This whole season was about Jimmy and with him gone, other storylines can follow through.
2. Van Alden has moved to the Midwest, which is Capone's territory! This will put him in many more situations where his belief in God is put to the test. I can see an interesting dynamic between Van Alden and Capone (good...because Capone has been pretty one this season).
There are a lot of plot points the next season can address:
1. If you notice on the final episode, Owen looks with horror at Nucky as he shoots Jimmy. I believe Owen is starting to believe Nucky is not a man he should follow. There is a chance that he and Richard will team up against Nucky at some point. Remember he and Richard are not strangers and did have an interesting encounter early in the series.
I'm upset about losing Jimmy, but I want to see how Owen comes up as Nucky's right hand man, and Richard's growth without Jimmy. If those characters die next season I'm basically done with BE.
Terrence Winter's been very enthusiastic about Richard Harrow, so much so that they signed the actor up for a second season three episodes into his first. When asked if Harrow will figure in season three, Winter said, "Yes, absolutely". That should be interesting.
I agree with you on Margaret personally I thought she was the one who would get killed at the end and that Owen would also get killed cause Nucky would find out about her cheating on him. But as for Jimmy that made no sense cause the one person who could have over time been a tough opponent for Nucky would be Jimmy. Who else is there Al Capone.
In regards to your comment about "Are women really that simple", I'm going to need you to remember that the VAST MAJORITY of writers are white MEN. Giving you the side-eye for this comment tbh.
I HATE to see Jimmy go, I actually screamed when it happened but at least they did not cop out like SoA did by doing a corny ass ~twist~ that allowed him to keep on living.
@thinkbyonddabox It was ridiculous the guy who killed his wife shoulda been killed off instead either that or Eli I find Eli to just be a weak part of the story who always runs crying back like a little bitch back to his brother or someone else only to save his own ass.
I am pretty damb disappointed that they killed off Jimmy. I henestly didn't see it coming, and I really hate having to say this cause I've loved the show from the begining but I believe it's gonna be all down hill from here with this series. Just too damb bad. HBO fucked it up by killing off Jimmy.
I'm surprised you didn't say anything about Margret signing the land over to the church. That is building up her character for next season .My video crashed halfway into it so i haven't had time to rewatch if you did mention that.
I'd like to see rants when you get back from break, larry. But only if you feel inspired. I know, I at least, can tell when you're pushing yourself to do something- if you'd like to talk about something- i'd love to see one. I'm interested in those, GoT reviews, movie reviews, and anything else you feel excited/inspired to discuss. Have a good holiday
man what the fucking fuck! They kill my boy jimmy. I was too piss off. I mean I only watch the show for him and lucky. Man it was a bad season finale. I mean I dont give a fuck if anybody liked Jimmy or not. But he was my favorite character.
man I was so let down by this episode. I kept on hoping Richard was sitting somewhere with the sniper rifle, then Jimmi got shot and I was like nooo! Then I relised he was still alive and there was still a chance...but my hopes got crushed.
Why are people so sympathetic towards Jimmy? He was stupid, cowardly, and an asshole. He simply.. deserved to die. Though granted, he was an excellent actor in being a stupid cowardly asshole. But i for one said "hell ya" when nucky shot him. I was expecting him to point the gun at Eli and shoot him too but.. oh well. Though seriously. How are people sympathetic with jimmy? Richard harrow i can understand, but jimmy... what...
Yeah. People who are really students of Mob history will pick up on the fact that Cicero, Ill., is the place Al Capone became headquartered in 1924. So we put him in a place where he theoretically could interact with other characters on the show.
LISTEN, "You can’t be half a gangster anymore." Those where the first words jimmy said to nucky in season 2 ep 1. Nuck had to show jimmy who is the boss. jimmy had to die and it had to be by nuck. larry dont sleep on bwe. a lot of people dont watch these series for the plots. they want to see just straight gangsterism. you have to have respect for the development of a series. season 3 is al capone rising. peep game val alden went to cicero, Illinois. same place al capone came up.
And they go off and write Jimmy out? I don't know how fast they could transfer to season 3 without such a character that brought major impact to the show. Whatever happens, I doubt they could make it to season 4 or 5.
I agree man, I mean im sure they got a lot to write about including Nucky, Margret, Eli, and even Al Capone(so original right?). Dude Jimmy was the reason I would even watch the show. Michael Pitt, probably the best actor on the show, well at least the best younger actor. I'm surprised they did not extend the conflict to a gang war. Lets all be honest this whole season was strictly based on Jimmy's character just as much as it was based on Nucky's character.
You have to keep in mind that this is a period drama, Margaret is acting exactly like a woman from that period... actually stronger than most!
It was her strength that originally drew Nucky! Margaret realized quickly that she was manipulated into the marriage, and the only power she has at home is to hit Nucky the ONLY place it hurts. HIS WALLET! Season 1 and 2 built up to this highway shit, and she just took it all away. Wish Jimmy killed his mom before he died.
@legionpeep jimmys death was sad, i mean i really felt a stronger character attachment to jimmy. i no joke almost teared up when he died. I really wish nucky had fucked up manny. in my opinion the brotherhood loyalty of jimmy and his companion is going to lead his companion to most likely kill nucky off next season
I have to admit series 2 wasn't as great as I figured it would be. I can't understand the time they gave to Margaret's character considering what they did with her. Why didn't they build on Margaret sneaking Nucky's ledger back to him? Getting her in deep and then having her daughter get sick and her conscience pang cos of that if that's what they wanted to do? They could've used the time they wasted on Margaret to develop characters like Angela and as for Jimmy...Wasted this season I'm afraid.
I cant tell exactly why they killed off Jimmy. The BE producers want to bring the historically legendary gangsters into the fore front (Rothstein, Lasky, Capone, Luciano) and give this show more legitamacy. The producers want to profile Luciano and Capone's rise with Nucky's influence which would make BE more historically relevant. Up to now there was to much focus on made up characters and events which goes against BE's premise of profiling the Bootleg era and their gangsters
I think they're planning on building up the characters that were more historically famous around that time for real, like Nucky and Al Capone etc. I reckon Al Capone is gonna have a little rise to power in the next series. But yeh you're right it wasn't the best series in the world by any means
I think you're highly overlooking Nucky's storyarc. Nucky has always pulled the strings, but never got his hands dirty. Jimmy told Nucky at one point, you can't be half a gangster. And the significance of Jimmy's death was, that Nucky is actually taking part in killing now. Nucky isn't half a gangster now. He's full on Gangster now.
Now that Jimmy is gone, who's going to fill the void. Plus, Van Alden has moved to Cicero, the city where Al Capone became THE AL CAPONE. The rise Al Capone...
There are weak men, and there are weak women. That said, I think Margaret is restricted to the society she's in. Not everyone has the means to be in the role that Esther plays, and to dismiss a female character for having flaws is just disappointing.
And you have to remember that there are characters on this show that they can further focus on that are real in history. Jimmy wasn't. Rothstein, Luciano, Capone, etc. the show still has direction to go on.
Jimmy's death was heartbreaking. I wished that there was some way it could have been avoided, but in that world that's a fool's hope. Nucky would never trust him again. I could have dealt with Margaret until this season. No matter how corrupt Nucky may be, he gave her everything and her disloyalty lost me as a fan. It might be worth watching next season because Nucky is going to kill her for signing over that 10 million dollar road deed to the church. That's all I really want to see happen. LOL
Larry, check out "Luck" on HBO maybe? It officially premieres Jan. 20 but there was an episode on after Boardwalk Empire last night. It looked alright, maybe you'd enjoy it a bit. Movie reviews might be cool too
David Simon has said that his biggest fear when writing is that the people who actually lives in the world he is depicting is going to think it's inaccurate.
@OtakuAssemble Larry I gotta tell you man I feel on what you said about not following Boardwalk Empire as much as usual. I have decided to stop followin' it completely so right now the only reviews I follow is your SOA reviews. But I am going to watch some of the other shows you mention because you do excellent reviews and I a fan of your work and i have no doubt that if you take time out to talk them they are interesting. So look foward to more after Holidays.
@OtakuAssemble Larry if you want suggestions for top series: 1. Breaking Bad 2.The Wire even doing a series review for either of those would be great. I'm sure you heard it all before but those 2 series will stand the test of time. As for "decent" stuff that's currently airing: American Horror Story, Homeland, Hell on Wheels all show decent potential but too soon to tell. Speaking of Hell on Wheels, I'd watch Deadwood first before that one.
Richard Harrow is still there -- hopefully. The only payoff I got was a "little" insight to Richard's character. I'm guessing they may focus on Lucky Luciano and Al Capone's rise......
I understand if you drop the series, so I'll keep up with 'Game of Thrones'.
@OtakuAssemble Hey Larry, I understand how you feel about the whole plot being a dissapointment in season2. That being said my interest in the series has less to do with the "main" characters but rather the development of the "B" storylines. Lucky Luciano is the real life godfather who starts out the 5 major crime families, how that came to be, the rise of Al Capone etc.. those are the fascinating aspect of the show. Heck, you should keep following just to see Rothstein being a total pimp.
Gotta say I totally disagree with your overall view on this season Larry. I thought it was absolutely riveting and this is the best thing on TV right now. Everything about this show is incredible.
the "referance" to The Godfather wasnt a referance, it was on purpose.

MORE Boardwalk Empire reviews! Please!^^

I've heard many people complain about the 1st season, that it made me wonder if season 2 was supposed to be the "swan song" for the show.
Sure the show won awards, but like you said for your video hits - the audience isn't there.
Will there even be a season 3? We know HBOs history for period shows.....Carnivale, ROME, Deadwood, got short changed.

I just love the fact the creators had the guts to do what they did. Can't wait for season 3.

I saw in an interview that Van Alden ran to Cicero, Illinois, which is Al Capones headquarters. So he will continue to be a regular part of the show

Give us Treme recaps!
David Simon has said that his biggest fear when writing is that the people who actually lives in the world he is depicting is going to think it's inaccurate.
And I heard you are from New Orleans.

Enjoy the time off.
