  • Just bloody excellent!

  • so great, has it anything to do with what we hear today, britney spears, or whatsoever shit!!

that's what I call live music, alive and damn good.

  • Wow!

  • fantastic walking bass solo!

  • We miss you eddie.........

    dennis, claudette & sidra

  • How Basie let his talents shine....great gift for us all....blessings

  • That flute player is BOSS. Low register is where its at.

  • Some serious flute playing by Frank Wess!

  • JOE NEWMAN! -I still learn from him every day-Yeah ; )!

  • This is as good as it gets. This is my favorite Basie band...Thad, Snooky, Marshall Royal, Frank Wess, Joe Newman, Eddie Jones, Sonny Payne, Frank Wess, Frank Foster, etc. CHECK OUT THE COUNT BASIE STORY on Roulette Records.

    WICKED GOOD.

  • Listen how Basie himself and the rythm section is backing up these marvellous solos by Newman, Wess, and Jones

  • Holy crap, that bass player is going at it so hard.

  • Brilliant, there will never be a Band as good as this again. The video though not very well filmed just shows how good it was

  • Joe Newman is my uncle and he wrote "The Midgets". Thank you TOURAILLE2 for this wonderful video. It brings back a lot of memories.

  • @Weezia08 One of the regrets of my life? Your uncle accepted my invitation to dinner while he was on tour in Paris - that evening I caught the flu! He left card at the hotel with an invitation (still have the card) - should I ever be in the USA. Just could not catch him during my visits to the USA. But so very happy to communicate with you his family. He gave me so much pleasure during many yrars - the best ever playing with the mute. RIP Joe.

  • You're welcome. I was only trying to explain this idiom as I thought you didn't understand it. The person who used it was in no way trying to imply he could play better than Frank Wess; nor was I, but I was trying to be helpful.

  • Thanfs for your french; Frank Wess is only one of the greatest musician in the history of Jazz (sax-flute), admired all over the world (first by Basie himself), and you find something to say about his music; I'd be glad to see you playing something on "you tube", may be good...

  • What does mean "he (F.Wess) goes above and beyond during his solo"?

  • C'est a dire qu'il fait plus qu'il doit. Il joue avec le grand effort. Fait-ceci le sens? Si mon Francais n'est pas bon, je m'excuse aupres de vous.

  • Who is the guy on trumpet ?

  • Trumpet is Joe Newman.

  • What a great video! I had the pleasure of seeing Joe Williams perform at the Blue Note in the late '80's. At one point during the set, he welcomed Frank Wess to the stage. It was incredible to see these two Count Basie alumni on the same stage. Frank Wess is truly a jazz flute pioneer.

  • Oh and yeah....the Count and Eddie Jones have an amazing interaction here together....nice quote from Old McDonald, et al....long live the Count and his music!

  • Joe Newman demonstrates once again that he is a mute master, and his phrasing is impeccable. Frank Wess never has to prove his jazz flute stylings, but he goes above and beyond during his solo. Great encouragement from the band throughout this number...which I believe has an alternate title in some Basie discographies.

  • great!!!!!
