  • I put in an application to work in childcare at the YMCA (I am 16 yrs old). The woman who runs the childcare wasn't there so I was directed to give it to a teenage guy who works there. He said shed be back the next week and he'd make sure she got it. A week later I haven't gotten a call back or anything. What if he never gave my application to her?! Or what if they just aren't hiring anyone?

  • @lillyandrosie It would not hurt to check back when you are in the neighborhood. It is also wise to have many other applications at other places. Also think of things you do well which might be needed by people or businesses in your neighborhood and offer to do any odd jobs that bring income your way. You will eventually find something. These are very rough times for job hunting but never give up. Thanks.

  • Helpful! Thanks. :D

  • @lightlivelyliving You are very welcome. Thanks.

  • This is going to be very helpful to my daughter. She is looking for her first job.

  • @anje7247 I wish her great success. Thank you. If she remains confident and determined she will succeed.

  • @Featureman

I think this is a good question I'm 18 losing fore my first job and found a good position at Best Buy but my Social Security is required should i give it? this is an online application by the way.

  • @saw386 *Looking for my*

  • th

  • And if you have no resume because you've never had a job?

  • @gacel92 You can have a resume even without job experience. You list your name and statistics and contact info. You also put down your schooling and training and special skills and abilities. Hobbies might be helpful if they have a job relevance. Give the person many reasons to consider you for the job. Everyone starts somewhere. Good luck with everything. Thanks.

  • in a job interview, do you think it would help to tell the employer that you need the job because its an emergency, my dads not making enough money to pay the mortgage.

  • @Sinz327 It ps OK to say whatever is honest. Also be sure to make the employer aware of your abilities to do the job. Thanks.

  • Thanks so much

  • @ballsonwalls1 You are welcome. Thanks.

  • I'm curious as to, how often should I call back? My family has told me to call the location back as much as possible, but I'm wondering what your opinion on the matter is..

For the first job, probably customer service, should I be writing resume's? Would they be helpful, for instance, getting a job at taco bell.. Or would it hurt more then help

  • @LUVmyROXAS I would call back once and if asked to try later I would call back in a couple of weeks. I would be checking many other places while waiting. I would try everything that might work including checking with friends about job ideas. A resume cannot hurt. It is a physical reminder and something with your phone number handy. Thanks.

  • @Featureman thanks very much for your response! I'll make sure and do just that

  • This has given me a bit of hope :) I live in the uk and it's been really hard to get hold of a job to fit in with my studies...but whats worse is i have felt so low because all the jobs vagrancy's i have applied for have come back with nothing but turn down letters/emails. I'll try this method and see where i go. thanks for posting this.

  • @ReniseLockheart86 Accepting rejection is something we don't like but it is part of the process. As life progresses we learn we need only an occasional "yrs" to overcome the hundreds of "nos." I have been told no far more times than I have been hired but I always assume the guy who didn't hire me wanted second best.

  • great advice ive sent out dozens of applications and have had no luck finding my first job :( hopefully thanks to you it will come soon

  • @killerflow12 I wish you great success. It is more difficult today to get a job, but keep up the pursuit and look in the unlikely places. Thanks.

  • Thank you for posting this video. I'm job hunting tomorrow, and this is super helpful. :)

  • @CCPcakes Great. You will do well. They need you because you are great. Good luck.

  • does just dropping of a resume and saying "I'm here to drop off my resume" help you get a job?

  • @equinoxninja688 Nothing in life is guaranteed. Most of what we do is not successful. I have been hired because I was in the right place at the right time. Nobody ever came to me to give me a job. I would try everything that I thought gave me a slight advantage over the next applicant. Dropping off your resume sounds like a very good idea to me. I hope you have great success. The job market is a harder nut to crack now than when I was young. Thanks.

  • @Featureman thank you.

  • if i didnt get a call back, i know i should revisit and speak to the manager and ask if theres anything i could do to help the process, what do you say would happen next, thats all the advice ive gotten and i dont know how the manager would react or how to react back to him. i applied at a resurant

  • @sirenasirene It would not hurt to ask to see the manager or owner. If they are not hiring now, maybe in the future they will need someone and it would be nice if they had your phone number. Let them know you are available for July 4th if someone needs to take the holiday off. Get your foot in the door. Thanks.

  • i revisited 2 days after i applied at rainforest cafe and the cashier said they are too busy to talk, so i asked when i should stop by again and she said monday or tuesday. today is saturday, what would be the best move from here. also how should i dress?

  • @Ariellllee Always dress ready to go to work. Just stop by Tuesday and have a nice conversation. Be someone they will like. Thanks.

  • 4 years ago I had a whole body tattoo of a business suit, and I have conducted all my business affairs stark naked ever since. Saves a fortune on dry-cleaning.

  • @gamesbok Thanks. That is funny. It saves a lot of money spent for coat hangers too.

  • @gamesbok So do you wear a cup, or do you just tell people its a large sharpee and stress balls?

  • how do i get a better chance at getting a first job when i dont have other work experience, i'm 16 and i have no technical skills other than being able and willing?

  • @arielledivinagracia Most graduates or students have no experience when they begin their work history. What you are selling is your personality and dependability and desire to work. Think of all your strong points and focus on them. The person who hires you should be interested in your abilities and not your experiences. Be very confident of who you are and what you can do. Thanks.

  • @Featureman "Attitude is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than what people do or say. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill."

    WC Fields.

  • @gamesbok WC Fields was brilliant. Attitude is indeed the key. If you are confident and you can be imagined doing the job without supervision, your past experience is far less important. Thanks.

  • what if they tell you to fill out an online application because thats "all they have"?

  • @silversoundd Just fill out the online form and go on to the next company on your list. Some bigger companies make it harder to get into the Human Resources area. Good luck. Thanks.

  • @Featureman Thank you, I was thinking of doing something like that.

  • I'll be happy to get into an interview. Everyone that i want to work for requires experience, references, etc and there is usually at least 2 others that have more experience than me applying. (industrial maintenance technician). I have just started looking (just out of college) and I just have a bad feeling. Seems to me that there are a lot of entry people, but there are also a lot of 30,40 yr olds that want the same jobs. Its a no brainer, but sucks. maybe i can start as an machine operator.

  • @xxjacobxx3 I recommend gaining confidence. Be bold. You can do anything the other guys can do and more. I have always thought very highly of myself and it shows in interviews or conversations or stage shows. I have a ninth grade education but that is one of my advantages.Nobody has ever convinced me I am not the highest qualified for anything I want to do. Think like that and get rid of negative thoughts. Good luck with everything. Thanks.

  • @Featureman

Thanks for the advice. Confidence is what i need most right now... and probably a lot of other people in the same boat, but i am also realistic. Thinking and acting like you can do it, and then not be able to do it makes you look more of an idiot than if you would have just admitted that you were not very experienced in that particular thing to begin with. But I think HR people dont always know how to examine a person anyways, so you can probably get away with many things lol.

  • God bless this man.

  • @laughwithoutsmiling Thank you.

  • Im planning on looking for my first job soon. These are some great tips ESPECIALLY the ones for actually applying for the job. Thank you

  • @AerogaSpammer Good luck. You will surprise yourself at how well you will do. Thanks.

  • @Featureman im 16, and was looking at getting my first job this upcoming summer. I'd be willing to do a handful of jobs, but I am kind of shy so I would want to stay away from a situation where I'd have to be talking to many people all day. If you could provide a few tips or places i could try it would be appreciated thx.

  • @viggy1890 I have worked in warehouses and on farms and I have driven a truck and done some other things before I became an entertainer. Materials Handler, Stock Clerk and Courier jobs do not involve a lot of meeting with customers. Every job has some contact with people with the possible exception of lighthouse attendant. Trust yourself to adapt and become much less shy as you get older. I was much more bold by age 18 than I was at 15 or 16. Good luck with whatever you decide. Thanks.

  • @viggy1890 Also if you are not shy around certain age groups, you might try a Senior Center or Children's Camp or something where you feel comfortable with the surroundings.

  • @Featureman good idea. My dad talked to his friend who said he would me interested in hiring me. He owns a flower bouquet store, and I would be interested in working there. Only one problem, it is about 6 miles away and I do not have a license yet. any advice? thanks

  • @viggy1890 That depends on your area. Some places have easy bicycle commuting and buses. Where I live is very bad for bicycling and walking and not good for buses. Maybe an employee there lives close enough you could carpool. Good luck. I used to walk a mile each day to work but six miles is too far.

  • Great video it was very helpful. But my problem is I get real nervous.. What sort of questions do they ask you at interviews??

  • @colorado1516 It is OK to be nervous. Everyone is nervous, especially on a first job interview. It shows you are concerned about doing a good job. Most questions will be about your experience. It is just a conversation. Practice with someone before you do the interview and listen to what is said. Look like you would look if you went to work following the interview. Thanks and good luck with everything.

  • great video!

  • @SuperMotherFugger Thank you.

  • This video was amazing!! Thanks for those wonderful tips; I'm feeling a bit more confident now.

  • @GorgeousB09 Great. Thank you and good luck with everything.

  • Featureman, thanks for the video. I have a question. After giving an office your resume, then what? For you, did most companies seem to call you for an interview after you used this approach?

  • @miketh33 No. Most companies did not call back. Some companies hired me on the spot because before I left the building they knew a little about me and saw my capabilities. I spoke to the people in charge as I was leaving the resume or filling out the application. Most people ask one question and leave. I had a reason for having a conversation. Thanks.

  • great video, but nowadays I think these tricks are expired..

  • @danushkawanasinghe The economy is much changed from when I was young. It is always a good idea to try a back door approach if the front door is closed. Thanks.

  • @Featureman yeah it's good to have a old school trick but in a interview, every body wants something different and straight into business without rubbish.

  • thanks for the edvice .

  • @SERVER1992 You are very welcome.

  • awesome video

  • @sureeshot Thank you.

  • classified.... God to much, guess ill just sell weed.

  • oh boy....i gotta lot of work to do if i want a job.

oh well, i dont have much of a choice.

  • @EternalCrappyKid Good luck with everything.

  • thank you very much for this :))

I'm going to try my best to be pushy haha I think that the problem with me is that I'm kind of quiet and not very aggressive at all.

  • @seabeancornetto Thanks. Just remember you are good and you will be an asset for the employer. You know they want the best and you are the best.

  • VERY helpful tips. I thank you for this informative video!

  • @TheRocketVoltage Thank you for the nice comment.

  • great tips, very helpful, You seem like a very nice person. I am applying for a job today first time, hopefully I'm lucky,

  • @TheKnightOutlaw Thanks. Just be yourself and never give up.

  • Thank you very much Featureman, I was really nervous for getting my first job, but now I`m more confident.

  • @elzouain You are welcome. Confidence will be helpful. Thanks.

  • :D I want to thank you, I haven't found a job yet and I'm almost 19.

Everything you said not to do I did T-T. I'll use this advice

really need to find one in a 3 weeks.

  • @maidwithluv It is best to remember that company will be so much better off when they have someone like you helping them. Be as pleasant and proud as possible and never give up. Thanks.

  • you shouldn'nt walk into any job interview in a tuxedo. unless it's for Secret Agent Man

  • I just got my first job. I'm so excited. I'm going to work in the bakery at Publix (a grocery store). Not the kind of job I expected but anything is a blessing in this economy. The company also has great opportunities for advancement, so if college for some reason doesn't go well, I have something to fall back on. I was interviewed twice, but they weren't really interviews; just 20-30 minute conversations. The managers are really really nice.

I feel so fortunate right now. Thanks for the tips.

  • @JokinJoe Great news. Congratulations. I enjoy your music very much so you have many things going for you. That is all good. Thanks.

  • This tutorial is for how to get your 'first' job, so I was just curious if you don't have a resume, or anything to put on a resume in my case other than a year and a half's work at a retail store as an associate (not much of a qualification), how do we go about it then? Thank you.

  • The resume is mainly a physical document for the prospective employer to have in his file that can remind him you exist and have a phone number and want to work. Even if you have had no previous employment it has information about your skills and abilities and special talents and phone number. Even with no previous job you will not have enough room on one piece of paper to describe your talents. Thanks.

  • Sir,

You forgot to mention that if you send in an electronic application that you should call the next day or talk to the manager.

  • Thanks for the good advice.

  • @Colimaniac I didn't do that when i filled out online applications. wat do i talk about?

  • Thank you for taking the time to make this. You were very informative, and I'm going to try these techniques next time I go job hunting.

  • Thanks. I wish you great success.

  • Great advice, but it's harder to apply than it sounds. I have almost lost hope. I can't seem to get past the "intro", as I'm almost kicked out or mocked for being shy. I take things seriously, but my tongue gets tied up and I stutter and shiver. I know there's no reason to, and what sould be done, but it never works out.

Anyway, I'll keep your advice in mind and keep trying (i have to) :)

  • Thanks. You are correct. It is harder to get a job now than it was when I was young. The nervousness is very normal. All good job applicants will be nervous. I would recommend checking with everyone with whom you happen to be talking about your search for employment. They might give you a lead. Be sure to leave your phone number and contact info everywhere. Good luck.

  • Interesting. I graduated summa cum laude in 2007 and went to Korea for my first job... Now apparently I am unhirable in the good ole, USA. I might go back to Korea, the true land of opportunity.

  • Thanks. Very interesting. I think much of the US hiring is done by persons who are following a book of rules. I would never be able to jump through the hoops very well. I always did my best in show business by dealing with club owners and old time 1940s directors, etc. Good luck with everything.

  • this is really helpful thank you im just starting 2 look for my first job all tha is getting to me now is im a bit nervous so im going 2 try and be confident

  • Good luck. The interviewer might be nervous too. Maybe after the interview you should treat yourself to something. Be yourself. Thanks.

  • oh well that's an interesting way of looking at it.... lol... thanks for this info. so hard to get this kind of advise out of my parents

  • Thanks.

  • Thank You

  • You are very welcome.

  • This is great advice. My only problem is that i get all nervous when i start talking to them. Once im put on the spot, thats when i blow it. (17 years old)

  • I'm 15 and I'm looking to get job this summer to earn a little extra cash and something to keep me busy. This video I think helped a lot I feel as if I'm going to walk into my place of employment educated and confident now. Thanks.

  • @TheHairyJesticles1 Thanks. Good luck. It is possible the economy will start picking up by this Summer. The confidence you feel will help a lot with everything you do.

  • SIR

    Thank you so much!

i learned so much i never used these methods before and im excited to get back out there on my job hunt i was really deppressed because im still unemployed.

god bless good sir thank you again

  • @xxLatinKillaxx You are very welcome. Thank you for the nice comment.

  • Thanks. I tried replying before but I think YouTube has problems. Nervousness is OK but don't worry about it. Worrying and nervousness are two different things. Nervousness means you are trying to do well. It will turn into positive energy later. Worrying requires thinking negatively. Just think you are so great the company will not survive without you.

  • I've never gotten better advice in my entire life. My problem is that I'm really shy, and last time I "worked" for 3 days at this restaurant and it was horrible. I'm afraid anywhere I go I will be just as incompetent and fail at it. And I'm just mad at myself that I can't find a job, and I'm already getting old (20). I don't even think I have any skills. I'm good at school, but I'm slow to get anything.

  • You definitely need more confidence. Be bolder. Don't say "I'm slow..." Say, "I'm careful. I take my time and do it right. I don't rush into anything." There is something you do best. Try to develop that skill or service and help others and get a reputation and it will soon become a source of income. It might be driving old people to do their shopping, shoveling snow, taking care of pets for people out of town, detailing cars or something. Good luck. Keep trying.

  • I think god hates me, I've applied to a crap load of jobs and haven't got called/emailed for a job interview.

  • God loves you but there is a recession in Heaven right now. It is a rough time for job hunters, but keep going to every place and applying even at places that have no help wanted signs. Now might be a good time to try something that you know you are good at doing but you had not thought of doing it for an income. Thanks for the comment and good luck.

  • lol yeah i know, the recession right now is painful. I try to go for jobs that are big named and have tons of workers there, like Target, Publix, JC Penny, Staples, & others but no luck involved. Well anyways thank you for the words of wisdom.

  • Thank you very much for the nice comment.

  • Okay, I am 16 and want to try and get a job at Starbucks. How should I dress for there? Polo shirt maybe? Anyone if you have any tips for me on this I would love your help. Thank you.

  • I am not a regular customer at Starbucks so I am not familiar with their attire. Your idea sounds good to me but someone else will know what they wear better than I will know. I would also suggest if you have a friend who works there ask them for some tips about who the hiring person is and what they might be needing. I wish you great success. Thanks.

  • Do you need a resume for your first job...EX.Costco?

  • You do not need a resume, but it is a very good idea to have one. Even if you have no previous job history it is a way to list your qualifications and abilities. Thanks.

  • I am 20 years old and I haven't got a job yet. I just want to get that off my chest. I know, that's pathetic for a guy like me for not having a job yet. I almost got one, but I screw up because I said to them that I only work for the summer. =(

Anyway. I am still angry about this and it feels like I can't get the things I wanted yet, even though I know how.

  • It is much more difficult right now to get a job because of economic factors. It was easier when I was young. I would advise you to never give up and do not just go to places that have help wanted ads. try every place you see where you could be helpful to a business or an individual. Good luck and be very positive about yourself. Thanks.

  • @Anitaliantaoist

I feel ya man. I'm in the same boat you are.

  • thank you sir. I will diffenetly take advices from someone as experienced as you. getting the first job is always hard.

  • Good luck to you throughout your life. We all have to go searching for the first job and it can be a bit nerve wrecking. They need you but you must display your greatness. Be ready to work. Thanks.

  • Old Man lol jk

  • The better line is "Where your job applications at brother"

  • That might work Or maybe go in playing an accordian. Make them notice you.

  • I must have missed this video! I've been subscribed to you for a while, but the one video I need is the one I overlook. This helps a hell of a lot. I am going to try and get my first job today, and I've been dreading it for a while. I lack people skills, you see. This really does help, though. Thanks.

  • Thank you. I wish you great success. It is OK to be a little nervous when doing a job interview. That is very normal. Just be who you are. They need you.

  • Man! thank you so much, I am so appreciative! You give more neccessary information than anyone else I could find on here, or google. Though I'm wondering if you might have further tips on developing communication and appreciation skills. I have trouble digging deep into strangers to find things to compliment or converse with about them personally.

  • Thanks. A compliment might be as simple as, "They sure keep you busy here." or "Thanks for interviewing me. I am sure you have a busy schedule." That shows an interest in them as people and recognizes their active life which helps them feel proud about themselves. Be as relaxed as possible, but if you are nervous that shows you are a normal person. Don't have too many clever things planned to say. Just react to their questions and be yourself.

  • thanks tom.

    really helpful.

i've got a job interview tomorrow just at this small shop that sells chocolate and that sort of thing.

    anyway cheers

  • I wish you great success. That sounds like a wonderful place to work.

  • Wow this is really helpful. I'm living in Latvia and economic crisis touched us a lot ;/ . So even my father can't find a job, and I'm just a student with no job experience. Your video so much inspired me, you should keep posting your videos ! (thumbsup)

  • Thanks so much. I wish you great success.

  • I'm from hongkong, the method you said is quite innovative if i use it in chinese (e.g. walk in..)

But i think it's very useful and a new way to find a job,

especially for me, a fresh graduate, and during a economic recession;an competitive environment

    Thank you very much

  • Thank you very much. Most of the time when I got a new job, it was with some organization that was not advertising for workers. I would walk into places where I figured I would be an asset and I would fill out an application or just talk for awhile with the person in Personnel. I used resumes and I have also got jobs without leaving a resume. I always walked in ready to go to work. There were many places which did not hire me, but I would visit dozens of potential employers.

  • Hello again!

I have another question for you.

I used your advice today at a gas station. I said "I would like to fill out an employee application." However, the fellow at the counter said that they don't have applications, and that I need to bring in a resume. I don't have a resume made yet because I may not be able to work for a while yet, but I am wondering what I can put on my resume for my first job?

I only have experience in janitorial, I clean various office buildings once per week.

  • Main thing is some contact info, like phone number. I would not put a Social Security number on it. They will need your SS# when you actually go to work. Put down any special skills and job abilities even if you have not worked at a job yet. Clerical skills, ability to do physical work, driver's license if you have that and might be applying for a driving job. Availability, nights, weekends, etc. References can be helpful. Definitely mention the janitorial skills.

  • Thank you very much! Great tips! I ended up watching this video, and I'm glad I did. I'm 17 years old, currently looking for a job and I plan on applying to several locations in the week to come. For me that's the easiest part, however I'm not as confident when the interview will come, it will be my first one (if I do get call back). What should I expect and how can I prepare myself for it?

  • Being nervous is fine for the interviewee. Just be yourself and don't plan too much how it will go because every interview is like a conversation and it might go in different directions. Everyone has been in the position you will be in and that is the start of your employment history. If you do not get that job go forward confidently to the next interview and the next. You will be successful and dress for the job. be ready to go to work.

  • Ok I will think about that for my interview. Thanks a WHOLE LOT! You've been very helpful, it's great to have people like you share their knowledge and experience with the young ones! Very appreciated :)

  • Very good tips, it pays to listen to somebody who is way older than me. I will follow your advice

  • Thank you. Some of the old tips still work. If you have great confidence in yourself that will also help. You know they want to hire you. They need you.

  • I'm just starting a work search right now. Right now my concern is that I am off and on at school finishing my diploma (I quit school when I was 15, but entered a program to complete my equivalency not long ago) and while I currently have free time to work, my lack of high school diploma makes me apprehensive, because my education is scattered. I have Grade 8 math and Grade 11 English, but how would I translate that to an employer?

I'm looking for a job in a store like Wal-Mart or Best Buy.

  • I quit school when I was 14. I personally never regretted it. I still learn every day but I learn what is important to me. I never needed to learn how to play basketball or do calc. I do my own taxes. I read and write and do math better than most people who have sat in college classrooms. You write intelligently. I would mention to an employer you left school to get a better education. Look up the names of famous high school dropouts. Be very confident. Thanks.

  • I'm honoured to subscribe to you.

and I found you via an antagonist....Respect

  • Thank you so much. I am honored to have you as a subscriber. It is my pleasure. I hope many of my videos are enjoyable for you to watch. Thanks again.

  • Keep up the Great work...so many people will benefit from your advice... You're a YouTube Guru tho you might not Know it.

  • Excellent advice for Job Seekers..I almost wish I was looking for one...I would do what this guy says....Great Stuff from an experienced Old Timer....5 Star YouTube.

  • Thank you very much.

  • Very good tips. I'm looking for a job right now, i'll be sure to employ these on my next attempt. Thank you very much.

  • You are quite welcome. I know it is more difficult now than during my youth to find employment. The old tricks will help. Good luck.

  • Very interesting and very true. thanks! rated 5 stars.

  • Thank you very much.

  • Hi. I am 18, and I have been looking for a job for a while now, and I just can't seem to get one. I have previous job experiance, but even that doesn't seem to land me anywhere. I have used many of the techniques you talked about before even watching this video, but nothing is working. I leave many resumes, I talk to the managers with a smile, I try and follow up, but their answer is always the same, "If I need you I'll call you," which is bull. They will have thrown out my resume by then.

  • I am sure it is more difficult now to get a job than it was when I was younger. I would never give up nor would I think "they" threw away my resume. If they did or did not would not change my approach. I would also try every way I could think of to earn money, not just jobs. I would offer to help neighbors with construction work or try helping seniors to get to shopping or anything you can invent. You will get a job and it probably will find you by surprise. Never give up.

  • I need some wisdoms like these... =)

  • Good luck to you. Thanks.

  • I'm 18 and have never had a job. What should I do? I filled out many applications and followed up, but I've never even recieved a phone call from a fast food resturant. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks.

  • Just keep trying. Do not worry about the ones who do not call back. If you are at the right place when they first realize they need someone you will get the job. Do leave many applications and resumes when possible. A resume is not just job history but your special abilities and volunteer work and phone number and references and anything of interest to an employer. You do not need a previous job to have a resume. Good luck. Keep trying. Apply everywhere. Thanks.

  • Thank you so much! The only problem that I have is that I get very nervous, but I will follow your direction and hope to get the job. Thank you once again. I really appreciate it!

    (Subscribed and marked as favorite)

  • Thank you. It is very normal to get nervous. That just means you are anxious to do well. I always was nervous at job interviews but after the interview is progressing the nerves settle down.

  • Thnx bro im getting a job mad soon....F@%K YEAH!

  • Thanks. Good luck.
