@celticlofts His idea to invade Norway was actually a good one (as proven by the fact that the Germans thought it so important as to beat them to it), but was doomed through bad planning and execution, most of which was not Churchill's fault. Same was true for Gallipoli -- again a good idea done in thanks to bad planning and execution. The British and French failed to give it enough support when it would have worked and then gave it too much once it was already doomed to failure.
@Grifiki Assuming you are speaking of the royal family you are wrong. They'd often spent time at Windsor, but that's a long way from Scotland. And, they did stay in London much of the time. In fact, they once came close to being injured when Buckingham Palace was bombed. They also routinely visited damaged areas in the city and surrounding areas.
As a child in London, in 1949-50, i remember playing in bombed out churches and craters, picking up shrapnel and bones, bullets, and the remains of aircraft. Thank God Winston came to Englands aid !
@RichBanks2010 I'm a political science analyst, and something I have noticed while studying world affairs is this: of all the former European colonies in the world, those that were British colonies are by far better off than all others.
@Halo4Lyf Not necessarily. Iraq was a British colony and it is not doing very well. Egypt also was in British hands and it is not doing so hot: economically, yes, it is better off than many of its neighbors, but not socially or politically. More recently, Hong Kong is doing badly since the Brits left: their rights are slowly being eroded by the Chinese government.
@shadowkitty56 Iraq not doing well? Let's see, they're the only society in the Middle East, besides the much hated Israelis, that can actually be described as "consensual." They have a growing economy that is outstripping Saddam's old petro-socialism by leaps and bounds. They've got genuine integration between ethnic groups. All of that was built on a foundation of British tradition. And lacquered together with American blood, I might add, to include a few friends of mine.
Len Cariou, who plays Franklin Roosevelt in this film, does a superb job. He looks like FDR and he captures FDR's combination of intelligence, shrewdness and brutality (said without prejudice to the honour of that great man) brilliantly.
Joe Kennedy's derogatory references about Sir Winston Churchill were so wrong then & now are so embarassing. Interestingly, Churchill lived to be 90 years old whilst Kennedy had a debilitating stroke when he was 73. Defending one's country against aggression is hardly war-mongering! Joe Kennedy had some pretty nasty things to say, not just about England's democratic ideals, but about Jewish people too.
@suelizjohnson All in all Joe Kennedy's opinion is moot & his life pales in comparison to that of Sir Winston Churchill. Churchill's words were worthy of winning the Nobel Prize in Literature and he was the 2nd of 7 persons in history to be made an honorary citizen of the USA.
@suelizjohnson, Kennedy sucked. Along with Chamberlain he was one of the architects of Munich. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, Curtis LeMay said of JFK, "Let's hope Appeasement doesn't run in families. Weakness apparently does."
@suelizjohnson I find that very interesting (and ironic) especially since Churchill had said, "Some people like Jews and some do not; but no thoughtful man can doubt the fact that they are beyond all question the most formidable and the most remarkable race which has ever appeared in the world."
Winston Churchill was a genius and the greatest leader of the twentieth century, and Great Britain is in a class all by itself. Bollocks to the EU.

Too many people have forgotten how thin the margin between victory and defeat for Britain in the opening days of the war.
