I particularly love this bit from the Heifetz masterclasses.Shows that Mr.Heifetz was just as excellent a soloist as he was a chamber musician. :) Makes me smile - how a teacher can make music with his students.Didn't expect Friedman on the viola though. xD He showed to be quite the student and musician.
Rest in peace,maestro!Thank you so much for sharing your music with us and with these students.The greatest legacy a person can leave is to have influenced the minds of the younger generation.
I notice people today, play scales much more beautifully and clearly then 50-60 years ago. Is this no coincidence with the times? Is it just the way it was back then?
What I don't get is why dont people play their scales better than their performances. The scale is so important, should sound clean, crisp legato, convicted, and beautiful. Not a rubbish mess. All music comes from this basicness. Than again, I'm not a violin player...
If you ask me, Heifetz's Chaccone sounds even better here when he demonstrates in the masterclass than the recordings, I can hear all the voices and the sound is well balanced. Can anyone tell me what he's doing from 9:00 onwards? It looks like he's putting more rhythms and even spiccato there.
He puts many complex rhythms from 15:15 onwards rather than just play it 1-2-1-2 , he changes to 1-2-3-1-2-3 and then 1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4 (I think) at the end...it brings out many voices. Can anyone explain?

MAybe it was some kind of trend to play scales all sloppily? And I guess this makes it romantic?

@srinitaaigaura
At 9:00 he was saying that when doing broken chords 1221 1221 1221 one should make 1 the main line but not the 2.
