Wow, you made your own voxel engine in Java? I tried something like this in JavaScript, but it was too slow. This here is a fine piece of work. Well done.
the 3d atoms will get smaller and smaller by time. This will be used instead of polygons in the future if you ask me what I believe. ;) The models will be very highly detailed. Like in real world. Because of the 3d atoms/voxels or whatever you want to call it. :D
see the article on 'Blade Runner (1997 video game)' on wikipedia for one of the earliest and best (imo) game uses of voxel technology. that technology seems to have been abandoned to an extent; I sure hope it makes a comeback now that we have better systems. Play the game if you can find it by the way, it's a great game.
@lazermunky25 I disagree. The worst thing about voxels are that they are cubes. Surely if voxels are to be taken seriously by hardware manufacturers then they should behave like metaballs, but instead of using polygons to render them, they sould have realtime curve calculations with properties such as colour, texture, reflectivity, physics and react to light sources. Voxels are essentially trying to be molecules, so why not behave more like molecules? Molecuxels anyone? XD
@PIKACHU49386 Voxels are 3 dimensional pixels. They can be as big or as small as you want. Thus they can give detail surpassing even Gears of War 2, but the rendering software available hasn't been optimized to today’s standards and thus they aren't utilized in a lot of today’s games. If some company would put money behind their development it could seriously surpass the graphics of today’s games. The amount of detail would be limited only by the artist involved.
Voxels are epic! Kudos for programming engine for them.

@hatestew Really? Is it possible to write a full 3D renderer in JScript? Inconceivable!

@Hampsterman4 It's been done. Search up Three.js (it uses WebGL of course).

The Atomontage Engine seems to be the best looking voxel engine so far, worth checking it out.

Play Ace of Spades its a voxel based building game like minecraft but with guns.

Voxels fascinate me so much. I do 3D animation in my spare time so I'm used to polygons. Voxels are like pixels, except with a z-axis. :)

what's "voxel"? it looks like something on streets of sim city, sim copter, etc.
PIKACHU49386 2 years ago
It's 3d pixels. No polygons.
