Met a crop duster pilot in a FBO while filling up the rental Cessna 172 i rent and we got to talking. turns out they wear a helmet because they crash very often and have lots of nicks on the prop from hitting power lines. he said to me as he was leaving "remember son there is a lot more room over the power lines than under'em"
Its rather simple actually, you simply make an approach just like landing, and other than making sure you will clear them, you tune out the lines or the bridge from your mind. Your focus is on being level with the ground at X altitude and simply pass under them level to the ground as if they weren't even there. Now, the WRONG WAY TO DO IT TO GET YOURSELF KILLED, is to look at the space you have to pass through as a RECTANGLE BOX. You may go through the target box, but hit the ground past it
@cobrachoppergirl Oh, it's rather simple actually? Really? You approach this just like landing?....I'm going to guess NOT a pilot? Unless you are flying something that requires a power on approach and high approach speed, and requires you to fly an almost flat glide slope mere feet above the ground all the way in, how is this like landing???
I have to agree, He was not even close. He cleared those lines with no prob. I grew up waking up to the distinctive sound of crop dusters and the smell of their spray. I have watched them fly all of my life. I do have to say I have watched them fly under the wires though. and those pilots, are in my opinion some of the best flyers, for sure. I enjoyed the vid. thanks for posting.
Oh my goodness. That pilot is out of his membrane, in my opinion; he could have cut those powerlines and ignite that barn with a dozen of roasted chickens for Thanksgiven to take home to!!!
Your all wrong, he cut the lines with his laser cannons. Thus clearing a path for his flying machine and than narrowly missing the barn! He is amazing!
There is no debate, he went over the lines. 1) He starts the pull up well before reaching the end of the field. The procedure for pullups after going under wires is to start the pullup well after the tail has cleared the wires. 2) The poles are on the opposite side of the road as the field he is working. There is no reason to go under in the first place. 3) for the guy saying that the air tractor is blocking the pole: if it was , he would be in the wires. Trust me, I do this for a living.
Sorry...I hit the post button...if he would have went UNDER it at that point, he probably would have been IN the lines...The pole and the airplane appear the same color...I dont think you can see the pole in front of him even if it was...it's an illusion.
Okay so you're telling me if you do pause the video at :50 like you said he is CLEARLY blocking the pole. You can't say that he isn't, you can see it plain as day. Please enlighten me on how he can be farther down yet blocking a pole that is supposively in front of the him and should be blocking the view of the plane. Yet, if you DO pause it at :50 the plane actually blocks the view of the telephone pole, and you can CLEARLY see the plane go UNDERNEATH the wire.
One more for over the line. he starts to pull up at least 100' before the line. I too have been under the wires and this was clearly not. I think this plane is bigger than alot of people realize. thinking the plane is the size of a supercub creates the illusion that he is closer....and lower than he really is.
Another one that thinks he went under the lines,Dude!he was over the lines.I know they fly under the wires at times and are incredible pilots, but i just can't understand how some people think he was under the lines by looking at this video. You would have to be pretty ignorant to think that this airplane passed under the wires.
Glad to see some good folks are willing to give this guy the credit he is due. Pause the video at 49 secs to see that his plane is BLOCKING the view of the power pole on his left! Now how could that be if he wasn't UNDER the power lines? I don't need any hours of flying time to see this undisputable reality .. geeesh people!
I knew Gary Hubler - Damned best pilot to ever live! I remember him racing John Sharp at Reno - John had million dollar airplane - Gary had Lee Hersch the mechanic! - Gary won. and no, I've seen him up close - under the power lines!
I have to agree, he CLEARLY went over the wires, not under them. I've got a little over 1,000 hrs of ag time, and I've BEEN under wires. From your vantage point, it looks like he's right in front of you, but he's a ways down the road. You might be seing what YOU want to see, but anyone with any ag experience at all can clearly see he's over, NOT under the wires on that pass.
Not true - on the original video which is much clearer, we were able to pause just as the plane crosses under the power line. You cannot see the pole because the plan blocks it BELOW the power line.
You are seeing what you want to see. However, as someone who has done it many times, I can tell he flew OVER the wire. He was also a lot farther down the road than you think -- NOT over your barn.

Flying a Crop Duster is a very dangerous job. It takes a highly skilled pilot with lots of training to do it.

actually, if you look very closely you can see the pole in front of the plane....he DID go OVER the lines, very narrowly clearing them:)

I actually am a current Ag Pilot and I promise you that he went over the lines.

So please explain to me how it is physically possible for an object to BLOCK the view of another object if its NOT in front of it?

R.I.P. Mike Michealson. He flew so low that his landing gear would bump the levee's spraying rice.

danm that looks fun! iv seen a crop pilots do exactly that go under the power lines. you cant judge where they are until you pass under.

Hell, you don't need to have been in an ag-plane, or have many hours in one, to see that he went OVER the lines.
And...pulling up to miss the barn? That's funny.
