Has anybody e-mailed the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame yet? Come on you Fans. We have to do this. I have put the word out. i don't know what else to do. I can't afford to fly out there and walkl around with a sign. You have to help me. This is my last attempt. The rest is up to you.
I am trying to get them inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. e-mail to the website. Go to the link contact Us and make your case. If enough fans inundate them with e-mails maybe they will take notice and do something about it.
I agree I went and dont remember none of the start bit on here , I recall white fog with green lazers firing around the arena white suited they were walking around , i thought they were great but from memory they went through a commercialist disco phase , thats when they lost me. prologue though was a different issue.
Yeh...I think this was shown on the telly...they blatently mimed this one, but the song after it was `night in the city` from the `out of the blue ` album and that was very `live`...Jeff Lynne hated playing live and there was many a concert were people would complain he would press a footswitch and that particular track would be a pre recorded effort...so i`ve heard of course x
It is Live! and always was! being a fan myself I know the history of this, much of what you hear ON THIS video IS PLAYBACK yes! BUT actually thats not how it was originally!, some dickhead decided to over dub the studio track on top back in the day This version was mixed in 1978 in mono sound for tv broadcast, Go to my upload of the same song/same night for the true performance!
I saw the show in Toronto (Meatloaf opened). This was one of-if not the first-major stadium show to make use of lasers and, for want of a better word, "techno-toys". A fantastic performance.
I saw Roy Wood (search for a vid of Roy and Kelly on a tv show called Can't Cook Won't Cook) saying that the name ELO was used because they wanted a light show like Pink Floyd... I always thought it was 'Light Orchestra' as in a quartet. So it seems that Pink Floyd might have used lasers before... dunno... but then, Pink Floyd are Pink Floyd after all :)
Pink Floyd never used lasers until 1987, actually. Yes, The Who, Blue Oyster Cult and Genesis all used lasers in 76.
I've forgotten which tour Bev said in his autobiography that was the first that ELO used them on. Either Face The Music or A New World Record, I think. I'm sure he said they used them before Out Of The Blue, though.
''Standin' In The Rain'' from Out Of The Blue, with respect to the uploader if you want to hear it properly and LIVE, click on the above video response
Ok time to put this debate to bed once and for all! ELO NEVER lip synched in a live concert , Yes they had backing tapes and that was the problem here whoever Mixed this concert sound was an Idiot, All the backing tapes are pushed Way out in front! masking the real performance, Check out my video response its the Remastered Sound version and sounds WAY better
I knew they used some pre recorded backing tapes to recreate the lush sounds of the records, which is what you would expect them to do. I don't know why people have a problem with that. I think the fact that so many people think they lip sync is credit to what good singers they are.
People think they lip synched onstage because when this film was originally shown on TV and then released on video, they simply dubbed the studio tracks over on the music. That combined with the way the video was edited suggested to some that they HAD to be lip synching.
I prefer to think they played live, with, as you say, backing tapes to fill out the sound. That's actually really hard to do, playing to a tape. You have to stay perfectly in synch, which isn't easy to do.
Interesting thought, bringing Don Arden into it. He probably thought he was preserving ELO's good name by not letting an inferior sounding recording to be heard. He was probably afraid that people might think they "couldn't do it" onstage or whatever.
According to Mike De Albuquerque, Don Arden was the savior of ELO. They were being totally ignored in England playing in front of crowds of a dozen. Jeff complained to Don and begged to come to the states. In a years time, they were playing in front of 70,000.
Oh, I'm sure he did. That's what a good manager does. I'm just saying that Don Arden probably thought he was "protecting" the band by making sure that they dubbed over the studio recordings when the Wembley filmed was shown on TV.
Saw this tour in Cleveland as part of a World Series of Rock. The line up
Trickster: Stunk
Journey: This was right after they added Steve Perry to vocals and still had Aynsley Dunbar on drums and Greg Rollie on the keys. They were the best group of the day but went down hill after this line up.
Foreigner: Supporting a strong Double Vision album but just OK.
ELO: Best stage shows for that era and in a big stadium setting it came over well. No lip synching as far as I can tell.
I was at this concert. There was NO miming. The only thing pre recorded was the sounde FX, thunder and stuff. They only thing that ruined this show was Mike Mansfields crappy mixing and production. I think somebody got him his first vision mixer for Xmas, and somebody super glued his hand to it.
Sorry to disagree but the 1st couple of songs they where miming ELO where good in the early days i saw them a few times, by the time of "out of the blue" great album but it left them wanting live. This was lifted direct off the album and they mimed to it.
Lol!! You obviously didnt read my comment. I'll say it again; I WAS THERE IN THE AUDIANCE! It was NOT MIMED. Thats an old tired rumour, been going for 30 yrs or more. Jeff Lynne is ''old school'' he couldnt mime even if he wanted to. He wouldnt know how to. Practically half of ELO is classically trained, they dont have to mime. All accomplished musicians. Look again ( 2.39 ) tell me why is Jeff frantically waving to his roadies to TURN UP his guitar? Why turn up a guitar that ISNT plugged in?
whatever i'm not here to argue with anyone but i can tell the difference between pure live and miming i've played in enough bands. the whole sound changes when they go live. there's other clip on here of early ELO playng live, i'm not saying they can't its just the sound was just too good
I'm not here to argue with you either mate. Your entitled to your opinion, but the sound was BRILLIANT!! I saw Paul McCartney and Wings there the year before, their sound was just as good, and they were not miming either. This is my last word on the subject. Oh and by the way: re the ELO Concert. The Betamax video. YES BETAMAX video that I bought of the concert was SO bad I took it back and complained.
Montrose? That would be an odd combo. It was Trickster when I saw them for this tour. Now Phil Bates from Trickster plays with former members of ELO in "The Orchestra".
Well, I wasn't at the concert, but I have the VHS and they are clearly miming to "Standing in the rain" and "Turn to stone", although Jeff's guitar was live on the latter. Had they remixed the tracks, they'd have got away with it but the pre-recorded tracks are identical to the "Out of blue" mixes. I haven't watched the video for ages but the live songs actually make for a BRILLIANT concert and ELO ramains ne of my favourite bands ever.
< and I had a difficult time reconciling those who I considered professional musicians of integrity with folks like Milli Vanilli, etc. -- considering that, the Wembley VHS was a horrible ambassador for ELO as a live band.

I heard that the band was only supposed to hear the music to help them keep the time..Who knows though..Still love their music and a cool sight for 78..
Wow, I had always heard that this was mimed somewhat, but it's pure lip synch. I would've been really pissed if I'd shelled out the bucks to see that. Was the entire concert like this?
Standin in the Rain is clearly mimed, and the space ship does look a bit like a giant burger, but I went to this concert and it is still the most spectacular event I have ever been to. I love it when Jeff Lynne motions to Bev Bevan to bang his drums a bit harder to try and make it sound live,
as many songs as they have on the radio... i cant believe touring was even needed.
