  • When I do this, I always have to yawn...

  • Excellent point on breathing...indeed it is a fundamental part of quality voice control.

Nice job explaining. One small recommendation. You said you like to sing material from Elton John because doing so makes you sing like a tenor.. Then you say, because you are not a tenor. You have a nice tenor tone, but I thnk you wlll find that your ¨tenor range¨, will get to the higher leves of ability that you desre if you say rather, ¨I am a tenor¨. Using the mind is a very powerful tool.

  • I REALLY like your comparison of breathing to when we smell something really good. It helped!

  • what a stupid comparision of breathing and a full tank

  • @IIGoofyII Hey...the guy is giving free lessons. Don't be mean.

  • @kilroywashere123 true, thumb up!

  • You get light Headed because you are actually getting Oxygen in your body and maybe your not used to that? just keep doing it and it should become normal to you

  • i dont know why, but when i did this is got really light headed. can anyone tell me why that is?

  • its a great exercise but my voice got super bass so it don't work for long

  • I have a question.. How do u urself tell that u have a nice voice? anyway the vids r very useful.. thx!

  • Omg...this exercises made me higggh...sorry gotta ly down for a min.Great vid though...

  • thank you this realy helped :)

  • I'd just like to point out that getting excess oxygen by breathing deeply all the time is bad for you.

  • Ahh its hard for me to breath like this...I only get like 5 seconds of breath...:/

  • You sir, are the first trainer I have heard who MAKES SENSE. Thanks for being alive :)

  • I have days when my voice sounds better than it usually does. how would i fix that to where i can get the same sound most of the time rather than every now and then??

  • where do you give lessons

  • Roostie.com invites you to secure a free music profile on Roostie.com. A UK platform which will help unsigned artists and bands serious about succeeding and getting recognised. Every promotional effort counts so get yourself on Roostie too :)

  • I don't know why, but I started laughing a bit when you said my internal organs move also when my diaphragm moves down. I think cause that scared me a bit, my organs are MOVING!

Great video still, thank you for the technique.

  • well i can say im influenced by jazz music my idols are christina aguilera michael buble frank sinatra and elvis presely i have deep and strong voice well not all jazz singers is supplied to hit highnotes well i can say i can hit highnotes but i cant sutain it

  • I have a very strong voice, i can reach very loud unbelievable pitches, but the thing is that when i`m in the middle of singing loudly, my voice won`t go for a long time, it'll give up. And, my voice will crack. I have the potential and everything to sing loudly, but it's just those problems. Please.. please help me, what can i do to make my voice better? :)

  • Is it true that you are not supposed to eat or drink dairy products if you want to be a singer?

  • @brnbear99 Milk fat can coat your throat and throw your voice off. Yes, it is advised to only drink something that won't leave anything on your palate or your throat.

  • Holy molly, is that you singing at the end of the video? That is really, really good.

  • when you workout, u inhale by counting to 3 or do A B C and same thing for exhaling.

do that for singing too, making sure u breath with your diaphragm/stomach/abs

when you inhale, breath with nose and exhale with mouth

  • lol i thought this was kindof funny, i was already breathing proporly my whole life without even realising it. i thought i was doing it incorrectly because me personaly doesnt like my own singing voice. XD thnx for the video.

  • THANKS!!!!! :D

With singing, my breathing is always my downfall. This has helped me so much.

  • You're saying breathe w/o moving my shoulders? Only expand my stomach foward right? My voice is nasally & I HATE IT! Does this exercise help my voice not sound whiny?!

  • THANK YOU!

  • Fine for a first lesson on inspiration but the bulk of problems come with emission of the breath, that is where "singing" takes place.

  • get to the point

  • i breathe with my shoulders when i smoke

  • @rangerinthehood -- Me too! I thought I was good...lol! But when I tried recording my voice, it turned out so bad, with nasal sound and strange vibrato. So I guess the recorded voice is what people hear me sing, which means it's bad :(

  • I sing constantly and write my own music do you know anyone who could publish my music?

  • i like this warm up.,. good thing i breathe correctly haha!! all these years i thought i was breathing wrong.,. :p

  • Well I guess Iv been breathing naturally for years in the correct way ,I cant recall when I breathed any other way but as you describe here !

  • If only this were correct.....

  • If Im not breathing consciously..I have trouble breathing at all...>_>

  • Hi, I was wondering...

im told Im a good singer. especially since I learned to really project. But I still feel I could use a lot of help. and other say I could use some help too. I was wondering if you could check out some of my singing videos and tell me what I could use help with. Please and thankyou? =)

if you need me to I will send you a link. and Im NOT trying to get views, I really want help.

  • Hello, if I breath correctly everyday... following this breathing system. am I going to sing good without any warm ups ?

  • Vocal Warm Ups are always important to tone muscles and focus on pitch.

  • its been long time that i didnt go to vocal lesson when i was high school senior but now i stop coz i didnt used it now ...but now im 25 im having hard time to recal the proper breathing and how to hit high notes ..

  • check me out on youtube.com Eve Holmes singing "It's Magic". I am unable to breath properly and I have tried...The air in the desert where I live has made my allergies worst than ever and creates mucus in my throat. I know if I breathed properly this might help. Believe I tried. You mentioned women do not like to expand their stomachs. Well you are so right....especially if you are not the thin woman you were years ago. I have never had singing lessons, you are an excellent teacher.

  • "....Oh Hi!" LOL. Thats funny. Enjoyed this clip. This was helpful. Trying to learn how to breath correctly so I can hold notes longer. Thanks for posting this up!

  • ive always breathed like that.. lol

  • Woa this actually helps a lot

My voice doesn't sound as scratchy now just cause I did this HAHA XD

  • when you were talking about the

    breathinq

    it was hurtinq me

  • well, hmmmm. i try to do the breathing, and i can't get it. got any ideas?

  • @Penguin9796 wen u breathe try to make the air go into ur stomache

  • Thanks so God bless you! I am trying to master AVE MARIA but dont think I can afford your classes :) do you sell any CD's ?

  • please am a rapper would this be of any help to me .thank you

  • oh my god THANK YOU!!

I've been doing it wrong all this time...I thought I should keep the air on my stomach or something...xD

    You're awesome :) Thanks ^_^

  • This was taught to me by a martial arts instructor, actually. It lets you get more air, gain balance, and keeps you fighting longer. Plus, it's the calmest way to breath. Excellent explanation.

  • you've got a very nice way of explaining things.

  • to remember how to breath from our diaphram our choir teachers tells us to breath into our feet lol we know we cant but my choir gets all scared and frantic because when he says diaphram they think they dont know how to do it but when he says feet they think its funny and they do it!!

  • No offense Mr Jenkins, but your explanations are incorrect. You should have watched your video prior to posting the video knowing that people would watch it as you claim your world famous. I've never heard of you and I've been around some time. I encourage everyone to watch Kevin's (Rockthestagenyc) videos they have helped me greatly, and I use his breathing exercises and techniques daily. They apply for all types of singing and not just rock.

  • great lesson you r the best

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Your hyperventalation description is all wrong. You hyperventalate when your body takes in more Oxygen than is needed. Here's why: You pant, and that involves mainly the upper third of your lungs. The majority of your alveoli that exchanges gasses between the lungs and the blood on the top part of your lungs. So breathing in shallow has the same effect on your blood.

For Singing, you need as much air as possible, so breathing from the diaphram allows for the pressure strength.

  • I think he meant "out of breath" not hyperventilating. They are different but they sound the same.

  • @wolfmusic92 Not exactly. Hyperventilation occurs when the blood CO2 level falls below a critical level, causing a rise in blood pH. Simply stopping the breath for a little while, or breathing into a plastic bag will quickly elevate the blood CO2 to normal levels. On another note, it is a common misconception of many that CO2 is somehow evil and O2 is good. However, the body needs healthy levels of both.

  • @hisnameisfrankie Not exactly what? I understand what hyperventilating is.

You are going on about what hyperventilation "means" for the sake of some argument that you think we are having. I didn't say you were wrong. Maybe you should re-read my comment.

  • Mistake, Comment was not meant for you. Just ignore it. Who it is meant for and I have already resolved the issue. Good day.

  • he's a little incorrect in his explanation about 3:00 - the lungs do not go down in any way - they expand outward with your ribcage. His point is correct - the details are fuzzy.

The BEST way to breathe low and wide to the waist is to sit with your elbows on your knees and breath in. Only your stomach will move. Sitting like this locks out the shoulders.

Also try visualizing in your head that you're breathing in with your knees. When you exhale you should feel like a deflating balloon

  • When using this technique (a familiar one, though only when I'm singing - not just normally) I also feel a rise in my chest, although my shoulders don't move. (Like my chest is moving out as well as my stomach). Is this right??

  • 0:10

    Oh! Hi!

    hahaha

  • he's a VOCAL warrior, not a physical warrior.

  • hmm, I could have sworn I wrote vocal warrior above.

  • that helped.

  • what are you talking about??????

  • if you sound good when you sing and sound like crap when you record you prolly are tone deff...or your ears suck at hearing lol ha

  • the singing success videos are better

  • haha that happens to me...when i sing, i sound pretty great to myself, but when i record it, it sounds sooo terrible

  • jeez was that really necssesary??

  • its the same for screaming

  • hahaha yeah

  • does anybody here have this problem you hear a good voice then when you listen the recording of your own voice it sounds bad?

  • Me o-o

  • yeah it's because the way the sound travels through and how we hear, we don't hear the way we actually sound til we record ourself and play it back, i just found this out through my Audio class this past quarter.

  • actually it has more to do with our voice bouncing around in our head before it leaves the mouth added with what comes out of the mouth is what we hear our voices to be.

stick your fingers in your ears and talk - that bassy sound is added to the sound we hear - other people don't hear that added bass - thats why our voice sound thinner on tape.

People don't hear that added low end we hear from the voice resonating in our heads and throat - the only hear what comes out our mouth.

  • @rangerinthehood Yeah, this happens to me also, but i don't know why?

  • @rangerinthehood yes i had that problem but now i sounds very good but its strange :P

  • @rangerinthehood I've had those moments. ?? dunno why

  • @rangerinthehood oh my god I have the same problem I can hear myself projecting my voice even sounds nice to me but when I record myself it Iike I'm singing in falsato

  • this happens to me all the time

  • @rangerinthehood: this happens to me also.........

  • @rangerinthehood my own experience with this is usually when I'm either too open or closed at the back of the throat. Trying to force a tone that doesn't come naturally, I often find on hearing myself the tone is flat. I go back to 'motor boating' the melody thru the song then sing it again without any tension in my neck. I find motor boating the best way to produce a free consistent and natural sounding tone with no strain.

  • @rangerinthehood it means u suck

  • @rangerinthehood it is called having no spine

  • @toolworks dude your reaction is abit late..... think i didnt find out i couldnt sing in that time?

  • @rangerinthehood u ever figure it out?

  • @rangerinthehood yes i do. got no idea why.

  • @rangerinthehood all the time!! (; --G

  • @rangerinthehood

All the time! Its so discouraging!

  • @SmallvilleFanatic600 It's because you're not hitting the write notes. Try hitting piano keys and duplicate the notes, problem solved.

  • @rangerinthehood I surely do and I hate it!

  • @rangerinthehood

:/ i hate wen that happens :/ but wen i grab the mic & i'm on stage for some reason my confidence goes up& my voice sounds so much better :]

  • @rangerinthehood its called being tone deaf lol

  • @rangerinthehood dont try to imitate the person u listened to before, try to liosten to ur own voice when u sing and sing they way u would sing the song

  • @rangerinthehood yeeeees!!!!

  • @rangerinthehood story of ke$ha's life

  • @rangerinthehood perhaps it's poor mic technique

  • @rangerinthehood i do very much...every1 tels me i can sing but everytime i record myself i sound bad and then cant build up my courage to sing for ppl...its very annoying hahaha

  • I already breathe like that, all day long. I still run out of breath. I normally breathe like this because I tend to be a very quiet person when I am alone. I hate very loud objects.

  • this is a great and helpful video thanks for the vid.

I really see an improvement in my voice since I sing in a band I have to sing for various nights for straight hours and the breathing helps me to not "hyperventilate" lol very good vid...THANKS!! :D

  • i can sing..but my music teacher keep's on telling mee i need to work on my breathing..so thanks for putting this on youtube for people like mee>>

  • Comment removed

  • all these breathing exercises work really well and are so relaxing to do. this guy isint talking out of his ass, ive already noticed an improvement in my voice just from this. thanks.

  • Wow you have an amazing voice!

  • i wish i could sing

  • im trying my hardness really want to find my voice my natural voice

  • do you think it is possible for someone who has never taken lessons to correctly breathe and get a natural vibrato?

  • Course it is, with careful work and practice. Good luck.

  • I breathe that way...

  • Anyone who's ever been trained on woodwind instruments should know how to breathe this way. I learned this in the fourth grade. This is a great video and explanation!

  • Don't quit!

  • damn that's pretty hard xD to breath like that :S xD but i m trying

  • Hi, I had a question. I used to be able to sing decently until I had a long lung infection (during which I stopped singing) Singing just really hurt me. A while after recovering I didn't have the breath to sing and I stopped. Now a couple years later I still don't feel like a have the breath and when I try to sing I cant keep a tune. It's so embarrasing and I've lost something I used to love. Do you know what may help me?

  • You are like an athlete that stopped your sport. You are just out of shape. Keep working to return to your former ability.

  • @VocalTrainingWarrior something similar happaned to me,just keep training,u will be able to singer better but not as free as u already did..

u will sing with vibreto lol xD

  • when i try to breath lower like your sayin...it hurts and feels like im not gettin as much air as i do when i breath like what most people do...my question is does this get easier the more i do it cuz it just feels unnatural to me

  • Keep working. It tales awhile to re-program our subconscious mind.

  • I just found these videos and i'm a singer. These helped me alot. But do you have any other helpful hints to help me, get better? i would really appreciate that! Thanks!

  • hey hey wats the song at the beggining

  • tiny dancer - Elton John

  • OMG!!! Is It Really You!

    Mr.Jonathan Morgan Jenkins...!!!!!!!!!

    The World Famous Vocal CoacH!

Can I ASK! OMG OMG OMG!

I Don't Have a Great Voice and i don't know how to sing......

Is there a solution for me to have a nice voice!?

    Please answer my Question!

    OMG OMG OMG!

  • Youre amazing! :O I love your training videos! :D <3

  • I'm having a hard time trying to reach high notes and all and i definitely want to practice reaching the high notes. Are there any tips from you that maybe helpful to me?

  • kinda getting light head xD

  • Interesting, but do you have any tips for singing metal? I personally dislike how my singing voice sounds, but others like it, I've tried mimicking the operatic styles of Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) and Rob Halford (Judas Priest), but I just don't think I have that kind of voice :(

I seem to be decent at singning rythm songs, but I have a very low tone, and others around me are very high pitched and I feel like an outcast, any help for that?

  • keep it real

  • Could be. A belly can only expand so much depending upon your overall size.

  • i can feel my stomach expand when im sitting or laying down, but when im standing up and breathing the same way, my stomach doesnt move. my friend said that its because im to skinny and my belly isnt used to expanding. is that true?

    thanks for the help!

  • Excellent video, thank you very much. I appreciate your very sincere desire to teach the world.

  • You are welcome. Pay it forward!

  • Wow you're a very good teacher. Most of the youtube music lessons/videos are a lot worse (lol expertvillage)

  • Thank you for the compliment.

  • So, I am a Freshman and I am in concert choir, and am in the process of audtioning for Jazz Choir. I am a tenor, and when I attempt to sing many songs, such as "When October Goes" by Barry Manilow, I have troubles matching the lower tones that shift from "When October Goes, the snow begins to FLY," and Fly goes a bit flatter, and I always break at that point. What would be a good exercise to help assist me in hitting those slightly lower notes without drastically changing my octave?

  • hi VocalTrainingWarrior, how are you? :) theres this 1 problem i REALLY need help with, when im singing along with the music of the song i want to sing, i suddenly go a bit high in voice and more nervous therefore i go out of tune, but when i sing without the song/music playing im fine, do you have any videos or tips for this problem, thanks for uploading these vids, their great ^-^

  • hey i like what u are doing. I really wanna learn how to sing really good n im hopin ur videos can help me. thanks for doing this for us.

  • it's a good breathing exercise. i like watching it and am also expecting more from you.

  • Check out my latest video.

  • im gotta do these everytime!!!!

  • thanx!!!!!!!!! im getting better at singing

  • That is awesome!

    Jonathan

  • I'm getting the same problems as Jaysticles. Feeling a stretch in the diaphram and getting light headed after a while.

    Please advise??

  • Me too. I think it's because I'm not used to it.

  • thank you so much! this really helps

  • You are very welcome!

    Jonathan

  • I don't really see the difference in breathing techniques. Is it that one makes your belly come out and give you more air and the other make your shoulders raise giving you less air capacity?

  • the reason you use your stomach in contrast to your shoulder/chest is because of the control. if you use your lungs they are pushed out and you get that straining voice. if you use your stomach you get a consistent air flow and you can control it... for vocal control. it's really about gravity but yea. plus the stomach can hold more air.

  • Your stomach doesn't hold air! What happens when your stomach extends is your diaphragm (a muscle underneath your lungs) is dropping and your lung capacity gets larger.

  • Try re-watching 2:30 - 3.15 again.

  • wouldn't this make your belly come out?

  • this would be the same as Having your body go "up instead of out" when you breathe, right? As in, your chest doesn't expand forward but upward?

  • I feel a stretch when i do it and it makes me go light headed ??

  • That's cause you're doing something wrong, it happens to beginners. I'm not a vocal teacher so I can't explain.

  • Thanks a lot(:

Now I can hold notes a lot longer.

    This really helped.

  • I am very pleased!

    Jonathan

  • Ladys tend so breath from the chest, i do lol and its not good, my singing teacher always moans at me for it

  • All humans should "belly breathe" to breathe properly.

    Jonathan

  • Great exercise Jonathan...thanks for the refresher because for a long time I've been doing it wrong.

  • You are very welcome. Check out my latest video on Interpretation.

    Jonathan

  • Thank you very much. this helped me out alot.

  • You are very welcome!

    Jonathan

  • it hurts when i try to breathe like that. maybe i need to go stretch my stomach muscles

  • yeah, I agree with you.

For some reason, I have the feeling that I cant get enough air if I "breathe through my stomach"

  • Great!

    Jonathan

  • You are probably using muscles that you have not used much. Keep trying.

    Jonathan
