i am a huge fan!!! love this movie...i'm looking for stop motion done of baron munchausen, probably shorts, fairly resent (in the last 20 years) can't find it at all in google
@Aaron1912 I am sincerely heartbroken. A friend of Mr. Neville had seen this video a few years back, and showed it to John and his wife. From what I remember, John wanted to get in touch with me. He was busy filming in Canada at the time - and I was wrapped up in work as well, so communication dropped off. I had a rare picture from the film for him to sign, but after losing contact, I never got to send it. I truly, deeply regret it. He was a sweet, wonderful man, and will truly be missed.
This is by far one of the most underrated movies ever. I really liked it! I can't wait to see Gilliam's future movie "The man who killed Don Quixote"!!!
My all time favorite fantasy film, well acted, gorgeous costumes and sets, totally inspired.I only recently realized that John Neville ( "the Baron") also played "cigarette smoking man" on the old X-Files series!
this was by far the weirdest movie I have seen and yet none has equaled it that I have seen been so long I don't remember most of those clips but I was young when I saw it last
i got this brilliant film on video, the only trpouble is i dont have video player!! i love watching this film and will alwys love to see it everyday!!
Beautiful tribute. I've never seen the movie but I just had the "Venus Rising" waltz dedicated to me. I'll be looking for the film and CD as soon as possible! :)
This is an excellent tribute.....the only nit I have is that there's no clip from the climbing down the moon bit.....my favorite part of the movie! I'd have shortened the Moon King chase a bit to fit it in. But I loved it despite that and you've done an excellent job!
@JimmyDaKoik Totally agreed - that's one of my favorite scenes too. I tried and tried to edit that part on my copy and it just wouldn't fit into my program for some reason. That's why the moon chase is so long on this video. Hopefully one of these days I can go back and re-edit, because I'd love to include that scene (as well as the ship/whale sequence). Thanks so much!
I just recently saw this movie and it was fantastic!!! I agree it was too underrated and should have gotten higher ratings. Also, this story reminds me alot of The Fool and the Flying Ship, also done by Robin Williams.
I absolutely love this movie. John Neville fans should check out the 60's film adaptation of Herman Melville's "Billy Bud" with Terrence Stamp, Peter Ustinov and David McCullan, another underrated Neville film.
What a film! A hero shot for bravery, to prevent him discouraging others. Callous and smug public officials, a phantom War the Government is winning, keeping the populace cowed. Sounds like the present day. The film is pure genius.
This wonderful film is very relevant today. A soldier (Sting) shot for bravery, as his example was demoralising to others, promoting equality.
Callous, smug public officials ruling a cowed populace with enemies at the gates, and keeping them in fear when the enemy is not there. A genuine hero despised by the bureaucrats. Sounds like the UK 2010 to me!
This movie is awesome beyond belief. Its the type of movie that makes you think you are dreaming... I love it. I just saw it last night after 2 years... Gave me such great memories :D
this movie drove me insane.i saw it once when 4 yrs old, then started having dreams about it at 12 14 16.etc now 25,didnt know if had elaborate dream or if a real movie.finally i know the truth praise be to god!
I first saw this movie when I was a little kid, and I loved it! Now, several years later, I watched it once more, and it was better than ever! Pure nostalgic this is, a great movie!
One of my all time favourite films. I had the pleasure of seeing this at the movies back in its day. It was the most played LD in my collection. Recently I watched the BD, still I am hypnotised by Terry Gilliam's magical, mystical, and fantastical film. With its glorious soundtrack by the late Michael Kamen, which I now seek on CD. If your curious having never seen this, or a fan who simply wants to recapture the glory of this film, track down the BD. A modicum of snuff can be most efficacious!
I just saw this filmabout a week ago, Im 21,and i´ve never felt so identified by any other character before. Baron Von Munchausen it´s an amazing image of imagination and dreaming while awake. This movie reminded me that life its an adventure, just as long as you go out and live it just as you always wanted to do
I bought this album when it came out.Got stolen some months later:( Bought it on amazon for about 70£.Totally worth it.Has to be one of the best soundtracks of all time.
Great movie...my favorite character is Sally 'cause she reminds me of me as a kid. My other favorite characters are Berthold and Horatio Jackson LOL he's full of it but I love him anyway
I totally didn't get it at all when I was a kid but now that I've seen it recently in the last few years, I absolutely love it! Also to see a young Uma Thurman was a total treat!
All that hard work was well worth it Terry Gilliam and everyone else who worked on it. The Munchausen Waltz is gorgeous.
And to have the wonderful Oliver Reed with steam coming out of his ears is inspired. The best Terry Gilliam film to me. What a romance, magic and legend 80s cinema conjured up- and another Python (Terry Jones) was responsible for another of my favourites, Labyrinth.
Gilliam's best. Seriously, that was his high mark. And that he had much less money than he'd planned and had to improvise makes it even better. There are few movies where a director sticked to his vision through such difficulties and delivered such gold. Here to stay!
@Stigmatainmypants It is maybe because back in the 80s there was MANY good movies, then this one was just another one of them...now they are classics!!!

Amazing just for the visuals. I have never seen such a frightening version of the angel of death in a movie before or since. I have been disappointed with every other film Gilliam has made this set my standards so high for him. The only other film I can think of that maches its complex world of camera work, visual, music, story and characters is "The princess bride."
Weren't there a couple of scenes, where he is chased by the death? I found, it was a pretty scary movie back than, when I was a child. I have to watch it again, if I find it somewhere.
I went to see this with my late mother when I was 8. I don't think any film has had such an effect on me. Such a great story. Watching this brought back so many happy memories.
Thank you Terry. You created a masterpiece. The only problem is that people which include critics don't like movies that make you think or use your imagination. But for people like us, the young at heart and young love such special films. Gilliam will go down one day as one of the most creative artists of all time. Also one of the greatest film directors.
Baron and Brazil are perfect! It is not a popular film, but that means we can keep this gem to ourselves!
Thank you Terry, You have created a masterpiece! I saw this twice in theaters and countless times on DVD. The problem I think is that people including critics have a hard time praising films like this because they have to think and use their imagination. It is sad really, because Gilliam will go down as one of the top filmmakers of all time. It just takes time to realize genius when one sees it. And Baron Munchausen along with Brazil are genius!
I was in my teens when this movie came out, I remember people saying it was a dumb movie and I never understood why they didnt like it. I think it seems dumb mostly to people who have forgotten the half reality half imagination world they lived in as kids. or maybe they never lived in the world I did. Definitely one of my favorite movies.
Even in this (very good) reduced version, i couldn't help getting goosebumps. One of my favourite movies, always makes me think about the power of imagination and the nonexistence of war. Both such dangerous ideas.
This film was refreshingly imaginative, making full use of the scripwriter's license to present us a fantastic make believe world. I have no words to describe the beauty of the Venus scene, complete with putti, and I remember being awestruck by it when I first saw it as a Teenager - I admit having a soft spot for Uma ever since.... Thanks for the great tribute, Screensiren!!
THis is one of my favorite movies. I have forgot it, Im glad that you brought back my childhood. I remenber that there were many scenes which made me laugh to hell, like the baron pull himself up by dragging his hair tail, hahaha, a classic.
-Near perfection! The movie itself IS perfection. Great story, wonderful characters, astonishing FX. I believe Uma debuted in this movie, and Robin Williams was uncredited.
-That waterery ballroom set must have cost a fortune!
-I love the "Right Ordinary" city leader. :)
-Why not a perfect 100? I missed my favorite scene. Climbing down to earth from the tip of the moon on that hair-rope. "This is exactly the sort of thing no one ever believes!"
is it in the book he shoots the fox in the tail with an arrow, so that it becomes so scared it literary runs out of its fur ( or whatever you say in english)?:P
Beautifullly done, thescreensiren. I have very fond memories of this film, as I saw it with my first girlfriend (Hello Tamara, wherever you are!), and it's stayed with me as a favourite ever since. It was interesting to see the Baron himself, John Neville, as a recurring character on The X-Files, playing the Well-Manicured Man (the Cigarette Smoking Man's buddy). Cheers for posting! :)
"Underrated"?That's an understatement{no bad pun intended,I assure you}---in fact,in my opinion,Gilliam hasn't made anything anywhere NEAR as good since!
Zeman's version is not better or worse - it's just different. And it IS different - to the extent that Altered States or City of Lost Children are more mainstream. :-)
Imo, Gilliam is one of the greatest directors of our time. Tim Berton's films look so much more ordinary. And did you know that Gilliam was Joanne Rowling's first choice as director of Harry Potter films? When the studios rejected him he said he'd never get involved with HP again. Rowling was really upset.
They sell a set of Baron Munchasen, Monty Python's and Now for Something Completely Different, and Monty Python and The Holy Grail at Circuit City for $25
i love this film so mutch that when i was 2 i still remember seeing this at the drive through theatre and is still remembering this as a highlight of my child hood at the age of 22 thank you terry gilliam for giving me these whimsicla memories
Saw this film for the first time recently. Absolutely adored it. Enormously entertaining from start to finish - a triumph, a joy to watch. Ruddy BRILLIANT.
Ojalá tantas películas de fantasía actuales aprendieran de la "verdadera magia" que tienen películas como éstas que, sin tantos efectos visuales y sin la tecnología CGI, lograban y siguen logrando cautivar a grandes y chicos.
I never get tired of this dazzling film; I still can't believe it was both a commercial and a critical flop. Hello!? We're looking at one of the most visually spectacular films of all time, an outlandish tale superbly told with just the right balance of humor, pathos and fantasy. Glad to see Munchausen has his fans.
yup, like he said.. I found a copy on ebay. I was able to get a really good price on it, but usually its kinda spendy since its rare.. This is one of my favorite movies, and most favorite score.
I was in second grade when I first saw this movie, and I fell in love with it. I still enjoy it today, I think it may be the reason I ended up studying film and communication :)
Anyhow I was ecstatic when I saw it on the shelves at Barnes & Noble. So now I have a copy because treasures like this tend to get harder to find as time goes by.
Then again, look at what Broadway revivals can do for cult/camp film :) "i.e Hairspray"
yeah, i was probably in 3rd grade, and I was sick from school, and my parents rented this movie for me.. One of the greatest experiences in watching a movie ever.. Fell in love with it. I've always asked people, "have you ever seen Adventures of Baron Munchausen" and since 3rd grade, I've probably met 2 people that had seen it.. and the friends that i showed the movie to didn't get it... Kinda sad, this is a superb movie!!
ScreenSiren, you are SO right--this movie was totally underrated and under the radar. I had the good fortune to see it on the big screen (art house theater) back in the day. It made a huge impact on me! Wild story aside, it's a delicious treat for the eyes. Terry Gilliam RULZ.
the emperor says something like - take as much gold as ONE man can carry so he hgets his strongest man and takes it all Ahhhhh Memories make more films like this i say
terry gilliam is like Tim Burton, always criticisd for not being able to introduce a cohesive story in their films, yet praised for their artistic visuals
i am a huge fan!!! love this movie...i'm looking for stop motion done of baron munchausen, probably shorts, fairly resent (in the last 20 years) can't find it at all in google

Baron and Brazil are perfect! It is not a popular film, but that means we can keep this gem to ourselves!

i agree, he makes gold! i love this movie as a kid and even now as a grown ass man. i got it on blue ray as soon as it the stores, go terry!

97 Snazzes on the 100 point Snazz-o-scale!

"Underrated"?That's an understatement{no bad pun intended,I assure you}---in fact,in my opinion,Gilliam hasn't made anything anywhere NEAR as good since!
ctdsnark 3 years ago
Zeman's version is not better or worse - it's just different. And it IS different - to the extent that Altered States or City of Lost Children are more mainstream. :-)
Imo, Gilliam is one of the greatest directors of our time. Tim Berton's films look so much more ordinary. And did you know that Gilliam was Joanne Rowling's first choice as director of Harry Potter films? When the studios rejected him he said he'd never get involved with HP again. Rowling was really upset.
TerryGilliamfan 3 years ago
Although, to be fair, Gilliam did say that Alfonso Cuaran, the director of the third HP movie, did very well with the material...

Your tribute is most definately worthy of the wonderful movie that you are paying homage to.
Time Bandits, Brazil, and TAOBVM are a trilogy of movies about youth, middle age, and old age respectively.
As much as I love Brazil, I think that this movie is my favourite.
It is a visually stunning treat, and a very fitting cinematic reworking of the children's book.
A magical movie,
A lovely tribute.
(I'll bet you could do justice to "Brazil" as well!)

BTony21 3 years ago 2
yeah, i was probably in 3rd grade, and I was sick from school, and my parents rented this movie for me..
