What a show....what an actress! Talent and then some! This is what Broadway is lacking in volumes...and yet we pay for good money for the trash that's now on Broadway and passes for a musical or a performance. We have not had talent or creativity on Broadway, save a few of the truly trained and experienced actor/actress in the revival. But nothing that can compare to a production such as Sunset Boulevard...score...story...performers...excellence. Nope, don't have it.
If Sunset Boulevard becomes a movie there is no question who should play Norma Desmond. I love Barbra, in fact she is my idol but Glenn is a phenom, gives you goosebumps she's that good.
I love the silent film style of the violins that play right after she says, "You There! Why are you so late?!" . Anyone know if there is an actual name for that stye and where I might find more of that kind of music?
@MrDixtracted ..I love those violins as Norma enters. It's very evocotive. There may be a name for that style, but probably only a musician would know what it's called.
Trejz - I love this Lady - amazing ....only a tinchy bit to much mouth movement occasionally - but what a performance..toi toi toi - have fun..Lol to each ..Anna simsannabim.blogspot.com
So many people comment on her voice, but the real gem in this video is from 0:36 to 1:30. Her control over her body, her poise, her expression - all are stunning in this role.
@swarze I'm actually referring to those psychotic little darlings who restlessly troll YouTube for clips of various actors in roles Patti is famous for (Norma Desmond, Evita, Fantine, Mama Rose, etc.) and then mercilessly bash those performers while praising Patti "in comparison."
I like her. But she is out of tune here. And rather badly in some places. Listen to the Australian production with Debra Byrne. She nails it better than I have ever heard.
@swarze I think Debra had the (awful) advantage to channel her own past experiences like Gloria Swanson did in the film version, which is why she's so amazing in the role, but Glenn Close is superb as well.
I always knew there was no end to her ability in acting. She is something of an enigma in acting and upstages anyone else in the female category in Hollywood. What the heck - how man has Meryl Streep won? She's fabulous as well ... but Glenn is THE mos versatile of the two of them ...
@WellDressedDiva Most people think that Meryl Streep is the best actress ever, and that the variety of her roles and the depth of her performances is unequalled in Hollywood history. Who else could have played Karen Blixen, a Danish aristocrat, and Karen Silkwood, an American factory girl, with such uncanny accuracy? Glenn Close has a much more limited range, but within that range she is very good.
@McGravity1 Never mistake range or versatility with being a great actor. There are many performers who, on the surface, can play hundreds of different types of characters and get down the accents and mannerism - but very seldom does it go any deeper than that. Great acting is about capturing the soul of whoever your playing - Not how many accents one can do. Glenn is fantastic actress, Meryl is very versatile but can be souless. For truly great acting see Vanessa Redgrave, Julie Harris..
@McGravity1 Meryl Streep is so freaking OVERated! Yes, shes in many movies, and thats fine, but shes very BASIC in many of those roles. The best actresses now are Portman, Glenn, Blanchet, Vera Farmiga, and even Whitherspoon(who can really do a role that NO-ONE wanted-to-take-bc-it-was-REALLY-dificult-"Legally Blond," then Walk The Line, then what SHOULD have been Award-winning Vanity Fair? Not many).

I'm sorry but she nailed Norma Desmond. She is better than anyone I have seen.

@AMTProductionCo No kidding. And she did it without benefit of a massive set. Just another actor, a costume and her expressive hands and face.
