It looks identical to my Garrard 121/4 - what, if any, are the differences? Also, I just found NOS stylus on ebay for the GE/VR - what is the correct pressure for this cartridge? Thanks! Great sound and post, btw!
That's wacky, gangtwanger -- I've been in love with my also minty Dual 1019 for years, but I just recently got an RC-88/4! I gotta get its changer mech working, but with the GE VRII cartridge, it's the best mono sound I've ever heard -- out of more than 25 record players I have around here. And it was free!
I have an RC88/4 (It looks to be the same changer except mine is painted brown and is fitted in it's own wooden base - I figured that mine was from '58-'61, but I guess I was wrong). Cosmetically, it's in excellent shape, but it definitely needs to be cleaned internally, as I think that the spindle is a bit gunked-up. For my regular LP's, I'm using a minty '69 Dual 1019that I'm in love with.
I have a few Dual changers two 1224's.,a 1219, and 1229. The 1219 is posted playing short shorts by the Royal Teens. I believe the Garrard RC 88 was introduced in 1955 and was conisdered one of the better changers at that time. I'm not sure how long they made that model The Garrard type A was in the early 1960's. I have just an Garrard RC 88 changer that works ok, that I bought just to get the GE cartridge.
That's quite a stack on the changer, and I enjoyed watching it in action. I like it when we get to see the changer in action as well as hearing the nice tunes from a turely great era in music.
WOW! My folks probably listened on something like this. I think my dad had an old Motorola with AM radio too. My uncle had a Philco TV with a rekee player in the console. Nothing liek those old consoles! Doris sounds great on 78!
Great post, maynardcat. One of my favorite tunes by DD! I have this 78 on Columbia 40300. My version has Doris singing additional backing vocals over the track "Patti Page Style". I didn't hear them here. Is this really a different version or was an audio channel dropped as you were recording this?
HI ThorSmith. This is the original version of this song. I had forgotten about the version you are talking about until your comment, and I have it somehwere on a 45rpm, which is the 2nd version of this song. I was surprised at the difference. I expected them to be the same. You are correct it is a Patti Page style and one that I never heard Doris use until the 2nd version of this song. I like the original best, and now I going to find that 2nd version on 45 and listen to it again.
It's operation is similar to Chromebumpers Garrad, except his is several years newer. His is a Garrard type A from the early 60's, and this one is an RC88 from around 1954. Their basic design is similar.

@luvmyrecords I believe most Garrard changers of that era are similar, and around 5 grams is an ok tracking pressure for this stylus

@scotstricker No this is not vinyl, it is just a standard 1950's shellac 78 Columbia record

That Garrard changer reminds me of the one in Chromebumpers Dumont stereo console because of the record feeler.
