1:28 WOW! You can actually tell the colors on those space jellyfish this time! (When I watch the original episode, it's really hard to tell what color they were)
If you really want to see a difference, google 'Trek Core' and on the first page of the site, click the 3rd link. They have a side-by-side comparison from the standard definition to the new remaster. The difference is STUNNING! Vote this up!
Bummer, I was hoping TNG had actually been filmed in widescreen and cropped for television. I know it was framed for television but I still think it could have been made to work in widescreen.
Yes, it would have been nice if it had been shot as widescreen but only framed for 4:3, for broadcast, but that obviously isn't the case. By "made to work", are you talking of pan and scan? Have you ever watched something shot in 4:3 that has been butchered into widescreen for DVD/BD? It is horribly claustrophobic. Even when they do it on a scene by scene basis, i.e. how much top/bottom should be lost for each scene, it is badly cramped. I'll stick with 4:3 thanks.
@GhibliFan1 No of course not, cropping is horrible. Since my earlier post I've read that TNG was shot with the "Academy ratio" which could mean we'll get some more picture on the Blu-rays assuming they keep the 1.37:1 ratio from the film instead of sticking with the 1.33:1 ratio used on TV. We'll find out next month.
The footage in this video is 1.37. I just hope it stays that way and they deliver it in the best way possible in the original aspect ratio with no cropping whatsoever to any sides of the picture.
Actually the original 35mm is slightly wider than 4:3. It is 1.37 instead of 1.33, so the sides get cropped very slightly for 4:3. The footage in this video is actually wider than the 4:3 film and is missing none of the top and bottom. I just hope they keep it in the original aspect ratio and don't start cropping it to 16:9.
Well if they can give it us in the 1.37 ratio, that would be fine. But don't worry, no way they'll butcher it to 16:9. They respected TOS in this regard, and with people like Mike and Denise Okuda around to oversee the project, they simply wouldn't be allowed. It saddens me greatly when I hear so called fans asking for 16:9 of old 4:3 shows... despite the fact it would butcher top/bottom info to do it. If people just give it time, they'd get used to the black bars.
@GhibliFan1 LOL - just tell those people to adjust their TV so the TV will do the cutting if it so bothers them. Personally I watch TV on a PC CRT, one of the very last models to be manufactured by Samsung. And since I'm just 30 cm away from the monitor, the image is larger than on a supersized TV watched at typical distance. I wish I had a 15-20" broadcast monitoring pro-CRT though. This TNG BluRay is what I have been waiting for - BEST viewed on High-end PC/Broadcast CRT. Dream come true!
That's it though. Every HDTV I've encountered won't allow adjustment of ratio over HDMI in HD resolutions. Ratio is forced - press the TV remote's aspect ratio key and nothing happens. I don't know if there are any models that allow it, but none I've seen do. So the usual pan scan or zoom modes are a non-starter. Some BD players have settings to adjust how 4:3 signals are displayed, but they're often limited. I like it though, as I've grown used to bordered 4:3.
I feel the same, they probably didnt film it in a widescreen format though. If thats the case, trying to make it widescreen would make the picture look funky and warped. As long as it looks and sounds great, I can dig it
I think I remember reading somewhere that it was filmed on cameras intended for theatrical releases then cropped to 4:3 for broadcast. Might just be bullshit though.
Shame they can't put both versions on the disc with the old effects sequences, but it sounds like that's literally just not possible given the technology, so as long as they don't try to bury them, I'll be fine with that. Hardcore purist that I am, I certainly won't deny that this footage looks absolutely gorgeous.
@DevilMaster What new effects are you talking about? This is just a new scan of the original film. The original effects have just been re-composited. I didn't see any new effects. The Enounter at Farpoint jellyfish creatures just show a lot more detail. It was all already on the original film. We just couldn't see it since it was downscales so much for TV.
@DevilMaster There aren't any new effects, don't worry. No new CGI, no dubbed lines. A lot of companies cheap out and just "upconvert" existing tapes for an HD release. For TNG, they actually went back to the original film reels. Everything you see here is exactly the same as it was before, you can just see it better. :)
@ascend501 But that's not true. The space jellyfish creature shows a lot more details that were not present on TV. This means they remade it, unless they cheated and deliberately reduced detail in the comparison shot in the trailer to give the impression of having remade it while they did not.
@DevilMaster Here is a quote from the CBS press release, "The series was originally shot on film and then transferred to videotape, which was used to edit episodes together. In order to create true HD masters, CBS is going back to the original uncut film negative...and cutting the episodes together exactly the way they originally aired." Basically, what we've been watching all these years is 80s quality videotape, which explains the noticeable change in quality.
@ascend501 "Transferred to videotape, which was usedo edit episodes together" means that the film did not contain special effects, which were only done on tape. So, in order to have film-quality special effects, they must redo them from scratch.
@DevilMaster Not so sure about that. The jellyfish effects were likely live action, shot in 35 mm as well. I don't think they actually went in and remade the models. It would have been the compositing afterwards, that was done on videotape, so anything live action, could have been in 35 mm. And then any kind of CGI,, color correcting, compositing and editing would have to be redone from scratch.
@DevilMaster Here's another quote from the same press release, "The visual effects were all shot on film and will be painstakingly recompositioned, not upconverted from videotape." Sorry, I should've added that to my earlier comment, but there wasn't a lot of room. Videotape was necessary at the time due to the limitations of technology in the 80s and 90s, but everything was shot on film originally, including the speical effects.
@DevilMaster And they will. They've actually rescanned all of the film elements in 1080p. From the little bit I've seen here, it's a quantum leap in image quality.
Some things obviously will have to be redone in CGI, but for a three-episode box, that's hardly an impossible task. Besides, right now, this is more a less a proof-of-concept thing for Paramount. Hopefully the sales will convince them to do the entire series.
@DevilMaster What is happening is that the shot of the jellyfish creature is the original miniature footage, all the Enterprise shots, etc. are the original model footage, all they're doing is redoing the visual effects aspects... the glows on the warp nacelles, etc. there will be no CG where the ships are concerned...
@aegisgfx No they aren't going CGI, but they are recompositing the effects shots in HD from the original film elements (instead of just upconverting the existing footage, which is what a lot of Blu-Ray releases do). A lot of quality got lost in the original releases because the VFX shots were originally composited on videotape. I guess they might use CGI to do certain things though, like replacing the handful CGI effects that TNG had.
@officialvangcreative The only CG work is the visual elements... for the effects... since they're too low quality to transfer to HD... so that means the stars, possibly the planets, the glows on the Enterprise, etc. However, the model footage, etc. is the original model footage.
@snake56 CGI in TV series were like that back then. Remember this was before Terminator 2 in cinemas, Terminator 2 used millions of dollars and a year of CPU time to make the effects :)
@snake56 The Enterprise herself in that shot is the original model footage, not a CG model, the only new effects are the stars, planets, glow elements, etc.
I get that they've remastered the 35mm film stock, but if I'm not mistaken, a lot of the VFX were done in post on video (80's/90's standard definition). If so, some of those FX are gonna look crappy on Blu-ray unless they're re-rendered.
@msp1518 What's wrong with the sound, aside from the altered sound in the warp out shot... I did put together a video showing that shot with correct audio, albeit not 7.1 surround, but nevertheless, the correct sound...
@CJCA915 Well, then that is shocking because I checked on another computer. And look at the other comments. I'm not the only one. This video has out of sync sound. It happens.
@msp1518 I just watched the original FLV video again, and it seems the second part, after the Enterprise D warps, the audio in those shots is slightly off not that off, but slightly off, and it could just be a bitrate problem for the trailer... I'm sure the episodes are in sync...
@msp1518 That was the warp drive sound effect in Encounter at Farpoint. Watch the episode and see for yourself. It's the final shot of the Enterprise warping away at the end of the episode. Thankfully they changed it!
Are they ever going to release this/these in 1080p? It already looks pretty decent in 720 when I download the original, but with the exception of my laptop everything I have is 1080p.
It's possible that even though the footage in the trailer was 4:3, there is enough "extra" image on the sides of the original film that they can widen the shot to 16:9 without cropping or stretching. One can hope, at least.
The only question remains, will it be just an HD version of the show in 4:3 picture format, like it was originally, or will it be widescreen 16:9? The video shown (and implied) that it will be in 4:3 format, but who knows.
We can only wait until it comes out in January. :D
@shadowspork It'll probably be in 4:3 because that's how the show was recorded. To convert from one format to the other you have to either delete video data (sides for wide->full or top&bottom for full->wide), or stretch the video which just ruins all the work put into remastering it in the first place.
@bozardio Not so. Much more complicated than that. There was exposed frame/negative on all four sides, but often equipment would be in the frame. Only the 1.37:1 area was composed for, the rest ignored.
@msp1518 Well more what I meant was the filmstock it was filmed on is capable of widescreen format. I don't know how what they filmed appears on that film exactly, but just sayin.
@bozardio No it wasn't. TNG was filmed on 35mm film at full aspect ratio for syndication. There is no 16:9 version unless you crop the top and bottom of the images. Anything television or film that's shot with 35mm film (which are most things that aren't digital), and has an an aspect ratio thinner (vertically) than 1.33 is either matte cropped or filmed with anamorphic lenses. TNG was not cropped to 16:9 when shooting then re-cropped again to 4:3 for television. That's just silly.
@Pumpsify Babylon 5 was shot on Super 35mm filmstock (which has an aspect ratio of 1.65:1). The creators of B5 did this intentionally in anticipation of widescreen televisions becoming more dominant in the future. It was cropped to 4:3 in it's initial television run, but because it was shot in the 16:9 ratio it was able to be released on DVD in a 16:9 format. ST:TNG was shot on standard 35mm film (unmatted in full aspect ratio) which is the native 4:3 aspect ratio.
Dayjoborchestra is going to have a festival with this shit. If ninjas ate your house and beat you with a bag of sand, you could ring the bitch police!
@YOU111BOY I'll take hard scifi over space opera... Star Wars seems to revolve around solving conflicts by fighting... Star Trek is more a blueprint for what humans can become, if we set our minds to it...

@Tagrineth Actually TNG was filmed in 16:9 and cropped for the TV.
bozardio 3 months ago
@bozardio Not so. Much more complicated than that. There was exposed frame/negative on all four sides, but often equipment would be in the frame. Only the 1.37:1 area was composed for, the rest ignored.
msp1518 3 months ago
@msp1518 Well more what I meant was the filmstock it was filmed on is capable of widescreen format. I don't know how what they filmed appears on that film exactly, but just sayin.
bozardio 3 months ago
@bozardio No it wasn't. TNG was filmed on 35mm film at full aspect ratio for syndication. There is no 16:9 version unless you crop the top and bottom of the images. Anything television or film that's shot with 35mm film (which are most things that aren't digital), and has an an aspect ratio thinner (vertically) than 1.33 is either matte cropped or filmed with anamorphic lenses. TNG was not cropped to 16:9 when shooting then re-cropped again to 4:3 for television. That's just silly.

@chadwpalm Well Babylon 5 was shot in 16:9 even though they only planned to broadcast it in 4.3 at the time (alas the graphics weren't).
Pumpsify 3 months ago
@Pumpsify Babylon 5 was shot on Super 35mm filmstock (which has an aspect ratio of 1.65:1). The creators of B5 did this intentionally in anticipation of widescreen televisions becoming more dominant in the future. It was cropped to 4:3 in it's initial television run, but because it was shot in the 16:9 ratio it was able to be released on DVD in a 16:9 format. ST:TNG was shot on standard 35mm film (unmatted in full aspect ratio) which is the native 4:3 aspect ratio.

Oh wait, George Lucas isn't involved in this release. Everything should be fine, then.

@rhinnawi95 Well, "Star Trek" is owned by CBS while "Star Wars" is owned by Lucasfilm.

star wars ftw
YOU111BOY 3 months ago
@YOU111BOY I'll take hard scifi over space opera... Star Wars seems to revolve around solving conflicts by fighting... Star Trek is more a blueprint for what humans can become, if we set our minds to it...

@CJCA915 well said.
mevans1182 2 months ago
@CJCA915 True unfortunately though the Star Trek MMO is pathetic compared to the Star Wars one.
ExplorerXIII 1 month ago
@ExplorerXIII Well, don't blame Trek, blame the companies that make the games.
CJCA915 1 month ago
@CJCA915 I don't, I love Star Trek, but at the moment the Star Wars MMO is the better game by far.
ExplorerXIII 1 month ago
@CJCA915 Nah, I'd rather be a Jedi than a Clingon.
MrABurkett 1 month ago
@MrABurkett So would I, but I still prefer Trek universe, it's a vision of the future we humans can have... that's how Roddenberry intended it.
CJCA915 1 month ago
@CJCA915 You're absolutly correct about that. btw The Walking Dead is one hell of a series. (noticed your pic)

@MrABurkett haha, yea.
I did have a VFX demo reel of Season 1 uploaded, but to reduce the chances of copyright infringement crap, I deleted the video...
