Since Berlin was undivided, it became the easiest way for East Germans to immigrate by entering West Berlin, part of West Germany.

The "wall" (fence) being built along the US - Mexico border is being built to keep out non-citizens and protect its own citizens. Currently, the border is one of the most porous borders in the world. Unlike citizens of East Berlin, you can leave any time you like -- even after the fence is complete.
