Some of these commenters, who I assume are American, seem to think that in Australia we are all in the outback and no nothing about the rest of the world. Extremely ironic because most people in Australia thinks (or knows) that Americans are the least intelligent people on Earth! HAHA
how could anyone say bradbury won the gold by default? when you win, you win! youve beaten the rest of the field to the finish line. thats exactly what he did! "oh.... but the faster skaters all crashed!" well, they did and therefore could not beat bradbury!
Clearly the first guy fell and just took the rest with him. They didn't all just simultaneously fall at the same time...so it kinda sucks for the others. That being said, the rules are the rules, he deserves the win. Love it!
The person who said the other skaters were going too quickly round the curve was exactly right. The person who wins any race is the smart racer who gets his tactics right. Countless times at the Olympics both summer and winter the World record holder fails to win the gold owing to poor strategy.
anyone who says this man does not deserve a gold medal is a fool. he worked just as hard as any other olympian, with years of preparation. its not as if he's just some random bloke off the street, he put in the hard training and qualified for the final just like any other competitor
@DirtyDubstepSoldier If you knew anything about the backstory of this man you would know he deserved that medal more than anyone else there. This man has had his neck broken, has had his life's blood spilled upon the ice, took to making and selling speed skates to support his Olympic dream. (The skates your precious Ohno is wearing here - they are Bradbury skates.) Steve Bradbury deserved this gold medal a thousand times over - and a thousand times again. He is truly a great champion.
If you freeze it at 1:17, you see Ohno in front with a clear shot to the finish. Then the Korean hauls him down. I usually don't root for the US, but it's clear that he got robbed.
@hagenar great for australia for being there to pick up the win, but i couldn't agree with you more, Ohno got robbed by the korean, as for the guy who comments "those guys were going too fast and they lost control..." Ohno had maintained control, he was essentially pulled down by an opponent, but either way, good job australia and congrats on your first winter gold
Though I don't disagree with the fat American comment. It's true as a nation we are overtly obese. That generalization hurts us for sure. What hurts us even more is stupidity. As a nation we are a dumb ignorant people. The Australian bloke won because he was smarter than the rest of em. Everyone else was too greedy and desperate for the fame. They hurt themselves, and in the end the best man won.
@zZJus10Zz Ohno disagrees with you, he told Bradbury to go on the podium. You cross the line first you win. You cross the line last then guess what - you have come last. Thats life and thats sport. Try it sometime and wake up to the fact that no matter what your mother told you or your school PE coach - not everyone is a winner. With an attitude like yours - your clearly a loser.
Calling it a gold medal by default is wrong. He was first over the line and was the only one who managed stay on his skates. He won fair and square not by default.
I hate reading these "dumb luck" or "if they hadn't fallen, he would have missed out" it is whoever crosses the finish line first wins, and can do so by any means necessarily as long as it falls into the rules of the Olympics. How else should it have been done? give the 1st and 2nd medal to those who fell because they "would have won if they hadn't fallen" ??? I don't think so.
The winner is the guy who does the right thing, and the loser is the guy who does the wrong thing. Bradbury did the right thing. Therefore, he deserves the gold.
I'm not sure if anyone has realised this yet, but if the others hadn't fallen, he would have missed out on a medal all together. That's why I don't think he is as good as everyone thinks.
its not a blooper. hes a legend. if anyone can crash, loose 4L of blood, hav 111 stictches and a broken neck and then 2 years later win a gold medal deserves more credit than "by default"
You know what I think... he deserved this as much as any other guy in the race! He was focused, managed to dodge the pile-up & crossed the line... 1ST!!!
At first I thought that he didn't deserve it, but fuck that, the others were skating too close together and failed. He didn't win on speed, he won on strategy, which is just as worthy of the gold in my opinion.
@swaane Of course he couldn't predict that all the others would crash, but he says in the video that in the semi-final three of the skaters fell, so he probably had the same tactic since he knew he probably wasn't the fastest skater there.
Bradbury said afterwards that he knew he wasn't the fastest racer there and stayed back in case the people jostling for gold crashed - then he'd be able to pick up a bronze or something. He didn't expect them ALL to crash. He certainly didn't expect the 'something' would be gold. Hell, he didn't even expect to be IN the final.... anyway, it all gave rise to a new Australian saying for pulling off an unexpected victory: "doing a Bradbury"
Bradbury said "Obviously I wasn't the fastest skater. I don't think I'll take the medal as the minute-and-a-half of the race I actually won. I'll take it as the last decade of the hard slog I put in." He also said of the A$20 000 that the Aussie Post Office paid for putting him on a stamp four days after the tortoise-beats-hares win, "It should get me a car. I havent had a car for a long time."
hahahaha, how funny! I'd be thinking the same thing in my head "Seriously? I won? Wow, you guys really f**ked up but hey that's cool!" I'm an Ohno fan but really, that was fun to watch.
Yeah, you can say he's lucky but he's often said it was a deliberate plan of his.....just stay at the back out of trouble and hope the faster guys stuff themselves up.
lol u cant talk u havent won a fukin gold medal Australia and steven bradbury are a million times better than you. Put it this way it wasnt a fukin fluke that he got to the olympics he was ranked 10 in the world.
