They were transported to the Mushroom Kingdom via pipes in Brooklyn where they found a strange, new land who was missing a certain Princess Toadstool. However, the canon was changed with Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, when the story shows a pair of babies in red and green caps being delivered to parents in the Mushroom Kingdom by a stork. Now they're technically from the Mushroom Kingdom.
