"I love you little cutie but the office is my duty":, Nice man. In 1985 I leased him a new Cadillac from Tate Cadillac in Pamona, CA. I can't remember his name but he was a gentle man.
I still have this 78rpm record that my father received from UAL while he worked there (over 37yrs) and helped with the commercial. The record has the bloopers as well.
I worked for UA starting in late 1984 until the 1990's - I remember seeing this commercial as part of our (sales) training classes, and our fun instructor related how this "Take me Along" campaign caused some real problems for some of UA's business travellers. It seems that some of the gentleman customers were "taking along" their girlfriends and leaving their good wives at home. The wife made the discovery when UA sent out follow-up "thank you" notes. Oh well, who would have forseen that?
Just a point of interest. This commercial was directed by Michael Cimino, the man who won the Academy Award for directing The Deer Hunter. Cimino had a reputation on Madison Ave. for directing quality commercials, but he often took too long, was too much of a perfectionist, and he would go over budget. Three characteristic that would come back to haunt him when he later directed Heavens Gate.
I wish there was still a way to do this kind of deal while also honoring it to unmarrieds and gay couples. My husband will sometimes take me on business trips when he has a solid itinerary.
Anyone realize that the women in this video are actually wearing the attire used as the design for ladies room icons? (which are now totally out of date, but have never been redesigned)
I heard from a veteran United employee that this campaign was short-lived, due to the fact that many people did not take their "wives" along but "someone else".
The company was making some courtesy calls to thank these people (ah, good ol' 60s!) for flying with United and their wives answered the phone at home (remember, no such things as cell phones back then!), only to be informed of their husbands' secret business trips with "wives"!
I remember this add - which seemed shockingly progressive at the time...!

Dear All,
I have some question about psychology and sociology:
*Why do we love flying?
**what is of the magic of flying?
*How could the magic of flying related to American Dream or American Way of Life"? (This is the believe in 60's to 80's)
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstorms!!! :)

Great classic commercial. I just wish it wasn't so pixelated. Makes it hard to really enjoy.

The best United song was "United we fly, ruling the sky ... " from the 80's.

20 years ago when training at United, we had to watch vintage commercials... and this one stuck out! Funny to see again--

I remember this commercial and the jingle! Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the song was from a Broadway musical.

I'd rather pay the 1/3rd off discount and leave the wife at home! You can't cheat when she's around, you know....

This commercial was big in '69, it's amazing how
short the hemlines were in 69-70, even middle aged women were wearing the mini and notice the men were still wearing hats!
