Ted's the greatest :) Barry Gibb is by far the best falsetto ever to live.....and Ted is right up there with him. Barry can't act though...Met Ted, he's an awesome guy :)
Barry Gibbs best falsetto? I mean he is good but there are some awesome rock and metal falsetto singers that are just as good. Barry rocks but I think Neeley is better :)
its good... doesn't change my opinion though. you do realize there are hundreds of singers who use it? how can anyone pick a favourite out of so many!
These are all really powerful reinforced falsetto. Neeley has showcasesd powerful modal (aka. full) voice notes too but here he sings in powerful falsetto. Ian Gillan uses same style for his screams. Both of them are baritones too.
My post should read: Middle C is infact C4, and the octaves below that are C3, C2 and C1 respectively. So, the high note from Gethsemane is a G5 - while Steve Balsamo sings A5s in The Temple and What's the Buzz from the 1996 Lyceum Theatre Revival recording. I'm not going to perpetuate sterotypes by cussing you, or anything as childish. But, I still maintain that these are head/chest voices; while Balsamo's are more a mix of head/falsetto.
@billythekid1993 these are rock screams, all the C5 stuff was right but these are not out and out chest belts. They are quite literally screams with tuning used in rock singing and rock shows that use falsetto. Adam Lambert uses alot of this in his pop singing :) Glad to have been of assistance! x

I don't mean to be one of those Youtube comment haters; but just to clear up that these aren't falsettos, amazingly, these are chest-voice G5s - quite incredible. Full rock scream - ENGAGE!

i donno why people fight... ian just made the original record.... amazing.... but neeley [i belive] is greater for not only his singing, but his acting was awesome. im not saying that ian should have left rock stages to tour, but we must have that neeley was great in both matters. i really dont feel the energy that neeley has when i listen to ian's...
Can someone point me to a vocal coach who will just teach me the Neeley scream? Anything else about depth control and vibrato I can learn on my own. I just want the scream.
@luiscurtolo Not true, and I hate the "vocal experts" who think that the range you're born with is the only range you'll ever have. I was told I was a Bass and Baritone singer. I can sing EVERY ONE of Ted Neeley's notes! Albeit not with his perfect tone, due to the fact that he is just a better singer than I am. When I sing in Vocal Ensembles, I can sing every part I am given, and fill in for anyone that needs it, whether it be a Bass, Baritone, Tenor, or even most Soprano parts!

ozzymeetsjesus? Ted Neely is a great Broadway singer, always, cannot take that away. Half the world? Or most of America? Dio said it best when he called American Idol "American Karaoke". That's all it is: the world is a place of trends. Popularity is no way to gage talent. There are many singers who are waaay better screamers than that third-rate asshat. As for his singing... Lambert has never heard of melody lines, apparently. Like all TRENDS, his popularity will die out.
That is just one of the most amazing things ever. It really shocks me that Neely wasn't some huge rock star. He could match up to Led Zeppelin and Rush with those pipes.
I saw him a few days ago, he's 65 now and he's still nailing it. Amazing.
I cant wait I got tickets to this on March 3 at 8pm in Stamford CT!! My parents introduced this musical to me when I was only 7 yrs old! Now I am 31 and taking them to see this LIVE with Ted Neely. So Excited !
hey how was it?? I saw the show last night March 21 , 09 in washington, d.c. AWESOME!!! people in audience were crying !!! absolutely mind blowing show!!!!!
i saw ted neeley at the whiting and he was amazing. after the show when mostly everybody was gone he came out and i got to meet him.!!!!! he is my idol to and i grown up with this movie and my wish came true!!!!!!
the song was arranged for ROCK OPERA jesus christ superstar. naturally, rockers scream screechy, but you wouldnt know anything about that cause you just go ramble on things you cant comprehend
he's fully confident!! he's not screaming!!! pleasing to talk to you! that's a truly rock singer high vocal range!!! many rocker men are doing this.. ted neeley is one of the legendary rock singer artist!
I think Rob Halford definately does NOT use head voice...I only say that because if you watch videos of him singing now, he has clearly lost many notes in his full voice range (to the point where he has to sing songs like exciter a full octave lower), but he can still hit all his high notes just fine. Plus, watch the version of Painkiller from Unleashed in the East- that is definately not head voice. Also, check my cover of Baracuda by Heart on my channel
yes a great neeley scream! To me it sounds like raspy falsetto rather than mix voice. Balsamo does it in easier-to-tell falsetto though. I have never heard anyone really belt this high G though. Some metal singers should try it!
thanks, i thought so, cause whenever i sing it i go into my headvoice but his is so edgy and awesome and mine is so pure that it sounded totally different
falsetto cannot be mixed with chest voice; falsetto is disconnected from chest and uses only the edges of the vocal cords.
This is a mix of head tone and chest tone, enabling extended range with both dynamic power and more texture than would normally be afforded with falsetto; it should resonate in the mask.
just think about him and ronnie james singing together......dio and jesus bracking the universe with power voice

Dont forget IAN GILLAN, lead singer of Deep Purple first handl;ed this job with HIS trademark " he Scream".
He,after recording his part for the original Jesus Christ Superstar album(the Yellow Cover : ) was asked to do the shows as well.
He declined because he had himself morally committed to DP.

And he's awesome!
topozzone 3 years ago
so do you guys think that hes doing this in head voice or in powerful falsetto, like rob halford...I'm inclined to think falsetto
IPlayGuitar19 3 years ago
falsetto, indefinitely.
shoshodem 3 years ago
Yeah its a powerful falsetto.
But Rob halford uses a pure head voice.
PennyDreadful1 3 years ago
I think Rob Halford definately does NOT use head voice...I only say that because if you watch videos of him singing now, he has clearly lost many notes in his full voice range (to the point where he has to sing songs like exciter a full octave lower), but he can still hit all his high notes just fine. Plus, watch the version of Painkiller from Unleashed in the East- that is definately not head voice. Also, check my cover of Baracuda by Heart on my channel
IPlayGuitar19 3 years ago
I was talking about when he was in his prime ofcourse!
No and Painkiller may have been sung in a raspy falsetto to begin with.
His high notes sound much thinner nowadays.
PennyDreadful1 3 years ago
maybe when he was in his prime...but I still think that when he hit high G's and stuff, like in victim of changes, he probably used falsetto
IPlayGuitar19 3 years ago
Not I think the Victim of changes scream was in pretty pure head voice and its a F5#.
The thing about pure headvoice is that it sounds a little falsettish.
Early Exciter live tracks was also pure headvoice.
PennyDreadful1 3 years ago
if thats true then...wow
IPlayGuitar19 3 years ago
I disagree, I just saw him last night. His high notes were amazing. Shook his hand, too.
sithmaster2019 3 years ago
Yeah his high notes are amazing
PennyDreadful1 3 years ago
yes a great neeley scream! To me it sounds like raspy falsetto rather than mix voice. Balsamo does it in easier-to-tell falsetto though. I have never heard anyone really belt this high G though. Some metal singers should try it!
jowox 3 years ago
lol Jo' I just covered this song!
Unflexablegrace 3 years ago
Eric Adams should try it. ^^
Or perhaps DeFeis... Should be interesting, at least.

1HOLYDIVER1 3 years ago
He using full voice with alot of twang to create an edgy sound.
in classical vocal terms it is mix voice in CVT terms(modern singing method) its called belting.
empirecircle 3 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
I like to "belt" my women now and again...but I suspect that is a different usage of that term.
Do you suppose Jesus ever beat the prostitutes he used to hang out with? I sure hope so. They like that sort of thing, I am told.
"Woman and children, need occasional beatings", or so the Chinese saying goes.
Easy on the children, and harder on the women, say I.
Now go beat your women, everyone.
Amen.
eggbertsmith 3 years ago
haha, touche
teanbeandias 3 years ago
Actually it's not belting. It's metal-like neutral (loud compressed neutral with twang), with distortion.
quathar 3 years ago
Ted Neeley still has it!

thanks, i thought so, cause whenever i sing it i go into my headvoice but his is so edgy and awesome and mine is so pure that it sounded totally different
i wish my head voice was edgy like his, lol
jonster00 3 years ago
So wrong! That's is a mix. U mix your falsetto with your breast voice.
Coovex 3 years ago
you are completely right
AAlexM 3 years ago
falsetto cannot be mixed with chest voice; falsetto is disconnected from chest and uses only the edges of the vocal cords.
This is a mix of head tone and chest tone, enabling extended range with both dynamic power and more texture than would normally be afforded with falsetto; it should resonate in the mask.
resurgam44 3 years ago
when he hits this note, is he in his falsetto, or in a mix, or what
jonster00 4 years ago
That's is a mix
