  • just think about him and ronnie james singing together......dio and jesus bracking the universe with power voice

  • yes please¡¡¡¡¡¡ upload this version COMPLETE¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • cool to see he kept the voice

  • So amazing. Where are the singers like this for this generation?? Ted Neeley has so much passion for this, it shows so clearly.

  • Does anyone else think that's one of the most consistent, clear and controlled screams he's ever sung?

  • The great cry of the soul.

  • sounds like big malky losing it at the twins!!!

  • Ted's the greatest :) Barry Gibb is by far the best falsetto ever to live.....and Ted is right up there with him. Barry can't act though...Met Ted, he's an awesome guy :)

  • @Deppylicious

Barry Gibbs best falsetto? I mean he is good but there are some awesome rock and metal falsetto singers that are just as good. Barry rocks but I think Neeley is better :)

  • @WthyrPendraeg Freddie Mercury

  • @Kalabanano

He is good too... still not the best in my opinion... don't shoot me for that though

  • @WthyrPendraeg /watch?v=j--af9kt3RM

  • @Kalabanano

its good... doesn't change my opinion though. you do realize there are hundreds of singers who use it? how can anyone pick a favourite out of so many!

  • These are all really powerful reinforced falsetto. Neeley has showcasesd powerful modal (aka. full) voice notes too but here he sings in powerful falsetto. Ian Gillan uses same style for his screams. Both of them are baritones too.

  • Dont forget IAN GILLAN, lead singer of Deep Purple first handl;ed this job with HIS trademark " he Scream".

He,after recording his part for the original Jesus Christ Superstar album(the Yellow Cover : ) was asked to do the shows as well.

He declined because he had himself morally committed to DP.

  • @purpelaar He declined because he knew he'd make more money with Purple. He has said this himself.

  • roflmao! this video was funny when it kept replaying!

  • My post should read: Middle C is infact C4, and the octaves below that are C3, C2 and C1 respectively. So, the high note from Gethsemane is a G5 - while Steve Balsamo sings A5s in The Temple and What's the Buzz from the 1996 Lyceum Theatre Revival recording. I'm not going to perpetuate sterotypes by cussing you, or anything as childish. But, I still maintain that these are head/chest voices; while Balsamo's are more a mix of head/falsetto.

  • @billythekid1993 these are rock screams, all the C5 stuff was right but these are not out and out chest belts. They are quite literally screams with tuning used in rock singing and rock shows that use falsetto. Adam Lambert uses alot of this in his pop singing :) Glad to have been of assistance! x

  • He is amazing on stage with JCS...almost made me cry it was sooo emotional. I still have a crush on you Ted after 35 years!!! :):):)

  • I don't mean to be one of those Youtube comment haters; but just to clear up that these aren't falsettos, amazingly, these are chest-voice G5s - quite incredible. Full rock scream - ENGAGE!

  • @billythekid1993 he doesn't sing with chest-voice dude -.- and I dunno what ur talking about but such things as G5s doesn't exist , mid C is the C in the middle of your piano, to the right (one octave) u have C2 and the octave above that is C3 so if he sings a G its more likley G3 and it is a strong falsetto or at its max a mix between chest-voice and falsetto, you can even hear it by the change of his voice's sound.

  • @NeoAhiTtlZerI8120118 Middle C is infact C3, and the two octaves below that are C2 and C1 respectively.

  • @NeoAhiTtlZerI8120118 Didn't know you could get C -2 ;)

  • The best, with no exception.

  • Ted Neeley > jesus.. just sayin!!

  • this video makes me smile everytime :D

  • if he sang flasettos likes these on a heavy metal song...he would make all metal singers feel like crap :P

he has a scratchy voice, that makes falsettos sound like "rock falsettos" \m/

  • @joakkko95 Rob Halford would not feel like crap ((*_*))

King Dimond would not feel like Crap ((*_*))

  • Amazing! Not even Gillan gets close to this.

  • I love Ted Neeley! I wanna meet him, hear him live!

  • @Rekaaa001 He is both an amazing person and singer. he is a true artist, and so inspiring. he lifted my heart. i swear if Jesus was walking the earth the man would be him. I hope you are blessed to meet him one day like I was :)

  • Fuck me with a pitch fork O_o WOW

  • Ok,I should have said to see him NOW,cos I did back then,Lol.Sorry for the added post.

  • Im with Wandaslice.Id die to hear Ted Neely Scream like that in real life!I met him in Utah,at the play, when I was a kid,and was totally awed, right down to my toes.He was the most Gorgeous Jesus I had ever seen! I still feel that way.

  • ghehehe... "scream Neeley" .... cool. Yeah ...

  • i donno why people fight... ian just made the original record.... amazing.... but neeley [i belive] is greater for not only his singing, but his acting was awesome. im not saying that ian should have left rock stages to tour, but we must have that neeley was great in both matters. i really dont feel the energy that neeley has when i listen to ian's...

  • His beard is better here.

  • hmmmmm to see ted neely shreek live would be too much to handle the shivers would kill me !!!

  • PERFECT!!!!

  • I wanted more !!

  • WE WANT MORE!

  • can you up load the whole fucking song? please...

  • wish I could see him live, does anyone know if he's coming to Britain?

  • Can someone point me to a vocal coach who will just teach me the Neeley scream? Anything else about depth control and vibrato I can learn on my own. I just want the scream.

  • i prefer the original Ian Gillan

  • @DreamHealer87 are you stupid? Ted Neeley is the original moron

  • @calabriselmago Ian Gillan is the original 1970 Jesus Christ Superstars, you know nothing. Neeley join the film in 1973. Now you can go fuck.

  • @calabriselmago yeh bro Ian Gillan of Deep Purple (and black sabbath)is the original Jesus Christ Superstar.

  • @calabriselmago

I think they meant the original onstage... But even then, Ian is the original... The Broadway production opened in 1971, the movie in 1973.

  • Can a baritone reach that note? Cos I'm aspiring to be one but I definitely want to learn how to hit that!

  • @Kotlettbengt It's really a tenor note, but you could increase your upper register with training. Good luck!

  • @Kotlettbengt

Anyone can hit anything, with enough practice.

  • @Kotlettbengt sorry but no. almost impossible

  • @luiscurtolo Not true, and I hate the "vocal experts" who think that the range you're born with is the only range you'll ever have. I was told I was a Bass and Baritone singer. I can sing EVERY ONE of Ted Neeley's notes! Albeit not with his perfect tone, due to the fact that he is just a better singer than I am. When I sing in Vocal Ensembles, I can sing every part I am given, and fill in for anyone that needs it, whether it be a Bass, Baritone, Tenor, or even most Soprano parts!

  • @luiscurtolo I'm not angry with you at all, I'm angry with the false things that are being taught by vocal teachers across the country(s). It angers me that teachers can squash young kids' dreams, when in reality, those dreams COULD become reality!

  • @Valcarion sorry... guess i was in a bad bay. but ur right. and i should get a knew teacher.

  • @luiscurtolo no its fine man, no apologies necessary. I just get peeved about these things, had nothin to do with you :)

  • This is just amazing! <3

  • Absolutely THE BEST!!!!!

  • L0L Sebastian Bach Cant Even Hit The High Notes While This Guy Can

He Is The Best Jesus In My Opinion (Ted Neeley). He May Be 63 But He Still Has It!

  • Jesus rocks!

  • Amazing......

I to enjoy all his verions up to this time now in his older version....but the original was the very very best.

    : )

  • damn that ol geezer still screams

  • I remember this. It was at the height of the talk show wars. After the performance, Leno came and stood next to him. He said "I can imagine Letterman or Arsenio tuning in right now and saying 'Oh, wow! Look who Leno got to be on his show!" LOL.

  • This guy sings so Amazingly good.

  • I wish someone would put up the full version of this. Someone had before but took it down. I agree with DuoNJ who says this version is unbeaten. And it was performed on the Tonight Show of all places!

  • @denzelsnipes69

just search Ted Neeley on Google videos and you'll find the full version.

  • you should watch it for yourself

i did yesterday, and the 65 year old hits the notes just as good, and maybe even better now

  • @denzelsnipes69 I tried, once again, and fucking NBC locked it.

  • ..woah.

  • please please full version! This one from the Tonight Show is unbeaten yet!

  • please! upload full version!

  • @zakolebalsya Check my profile

  • jesus!!!!!!

  • I miss the full version....

  • Awerome!

  • Can you post the full version?

  • the full version used to be up on youtube not too long ago. along with many other audio and video clips from the AD Tour, it got removed. bummer.

  • god, I have to learn to do that

  • He still has a voice. Incredib le. Ian gillon sang that song very well but can't scream like that anymore. It has to do with proper training.

  • Not really. Neeley never had any training.

  • Wow! Not bad for no training.

  • yeah neeley

    alrightttttttttttttt indeed

  • ted neeley is goddly

  • Now this is more like it. That's one hell of a voice! Ted Neely is beautiful as well.

  • this scream gives me shivers all over my back... JCS in not just a musical, it's THE MUSICAL!!

  • wow.

I would LOVE it if Adam Lambert sounded like this after a few decades lol!

  • the guitar should shut up...

  • The best screamer EVER!!! Amazing Rock voice.

  • I wrote him some fanmail and left my number at the bottom as joke and he PHONED me back!!!! I'm from the UK as well!!!

  • Bleeding bloody blasphemy.....

  • I have been entranced (along with millions of other viewers) by Adam Lambert of American Idol this season. He has the same rare gift as Ted Neeley, vocally and I would love to hear him do a song from JCS! Please listen to him, especially his version of "Satisfaction" on AI as well as his singing in an off-broadway production of Ten Commandmnets, "Is Anybody Listening", ok? Tell me that you, too, can hear a resemblence. Thanks, God Bless! Peace!Out!

  • will you give it a rest? He lost. End of story. Stop comparing him to the greatest singers of past generations. Lambert sucks.

  • ozzymeetsjesus? Ted Neely is a great Broadway singer, always, cannot take that away. But Adam Lambert will go on to be much bigger and better known, worldwide and AI was rigged, no way was FOX, owned by right-winger,Rupert Murdoch, going to let someone as controversial as Adam Lambert be the next "Idol", but that said, there is so much pro-Adam buzz, it will be huge...wait and see.ROCK ON ADAM! Glambert 2516! XD

  • You can blame Rupert Murdoch for your precious little Adam losing the competition, but in the end its america's votes that decided. There was no controversy over Adam Lambert. He's just a guy with not even the highest ever, just high (rather shreiky), a creepy sounding low range, and a very pop sounding mid range. Drew sarich is a much better singer, and he doesn't just show off his range ALL the time, even though he has it. He's a musical actor too. Check out his role as Judas. He's > Adam.

  • Lambert is talentless. He takes great music, and then adds a whole bunch of high notes that completely destroy the source material. He's a show-boat. And Neeley is not a Broadway singer... He was a rock singer first.

  • Lambert is talentless? How does one develop a voice like that without talent?

    YouTube comments...

  • Unfortunately half the world disagrees with you. And to be honest you just sound like you're playing the nostalgia game, like how the past is always better and all that. We'll see in two years, I guess.

And maybe you should go onto DDD music forum. They placed Ted Neeley and Steve Balsamo, two pretty much unknown singers, up there in their most skilled list. Take a look

  • Half the world? Or most of America? Dio said it best when he called American Idol "American Karaoke". That's all it is: the world is a place of trends. Popularity is no way to gage talent. There are many singers who are waaay better screamers than that third-rate asshat. As for his singing... Lambert has never heard of melody lines, apparently. Like all TRENDS, his popularity will die out.

  • I guess there's nothing in this world all people truly agree with. I don't know, time will tell.

  • The list really is pretty well done though, they know what they're talking about.

  • Stop advertising that no-talent hack, please.

  • we have loved j c superstar for years and we are going to see him tonight in springfield mo cant wait

  • That is just one of the most amazing things ever. It really shocks me that Neely wasn't some huge rock star. He could match up to Led Zeppelin and Rush with those pipes.

I saw him a few days ago, he's 65 now and he's still nailing it. Amazing.

  • Give me another 55 year that break that!!! :-)

  • Haha wow that is amazing!!

  • I cant wait I got tickets to this on March 3 at 8pm in Stamford CT!! My parents introduced this musical to me when I was only 7 yrs old! Now I am 31 and taking them to see this LIVE with Ted Neely. So Excited !

  • hey how was it?? I saw the show last night March 21 , 09 in washington, d.c. AWESOME!!! people in audience were crying !!! absolutely mind blowing show!!!!!

  • haha i saw it the 21st too he was amazing! i was a little worried oh but he was as talented as ever! :D

  • he can still hit that note too! its very impressive for his age

  • i saw ted neeley at the whiting and he was amazing. after the show when mostly everybody was gone he came out and i got to meet him.!!!!! he is my idol to and i grown up with this movie and my wish came true!!!!!!

  • MY MOST FAVORITE SINGER EVER He is amazing I am so in love with this guy

  • OMG! he freakin rocks!!!!!!

  • He is an fantastic singer! I love the screamin',, incredible

  • i wunder if he evr wears black lool

  • Oh yes, no one is known better for their primal scream than Ted Neeley! Loved this clip. Thanks!

  • Somehow I think Jesus would sound less screechy if he were to sing.

  • the song was arranged for ROCK OPERA jesus christ superstar. naturally, rockers scream screechy, but you wouldnt know anything about that cause you just go ramble on things you cant comprehend

  • If you prefer a non-screechy version (gusto, I guess) check out the John Farnham version.

    Kicks ass too

  • Amazing good scream. I love it since I was a child.

  • I have seen some other sing that song in remakes and other, and NO ONE can sing it like Neeley!

  • can someone put up the whole clip of this perfomace. It's from the Tonight show with Jay Leno

  • Holy crap. THat man is 64 years old or so now and he STILL sings amazingly. I love it :)

  • The very very very very best. Omg. Love it. Thank you!

  • in my opinion, Ted Neeley is the best Rock screamer of all times.

  • I think I have to agree with you sir.

  • he's fully confident!! he's not screaming!!! pleasing to talk to you! that's a truly rock singer high vocal range!!! many rocker men are doing this.. ted neeley is one of the legendary rock singer artist!

  • where can one find the entire performance on the tonight show...?..can someone send it to me?

    Thx .,

    peace

  • I've uploaded it several times, but NBC keeps taking it down. I don't think it can be uploaded any more. :(

  • WOW I WISH I COULD DO THAT WOW GREAT MAN

  • Hey Guys, check out U-ROCK version of Gethsemane on youtube.

    Searc for:

    Gethsemane- Jesus Christ Superstar- U-ROCK.

    we'd love your opinion, thanks

  • This is "Falsetto Appoggiato".

    And he's awesome!

  • so do you guys think that hes doing this in head voice or in powerful falsetto, like rob halford...I'm inclined to think falsetto

  • falsetto, indefinitely.

  • Yeah its a powerful falsetto.

But Rob halford uses a pure head voice.

  • I think Rob Halford definately does NOT use head voice...I only say that because if you watch videos of him singing now, he has clearly lost many notes in his full voice range (to the point where he has to sing songs like exciter a full octave lower), but he can still hit all his high notes just fine. Plus, watch the version of Painkiller from Unleashed in the East- that is definately not head voice. Also, check my cover of Baracuda by Heart on my channel

  • I was talking about when he was in his prime ofcourse!

No and Painkiller may have been sung in a raspy falsetto to begin with.

His high notes sound much thinner nowadays.

  • maybe when he was in his prime...but I still think that when he hit high G's and stuff, like in victim of changes, he probably used falsetto

  • Not I think the Victim of changes scream was in pretty pure head voice and its a F5#.

The thing about pure headvoice is that it sounds a little falsettish.

Early Exciter live tracks was also pure headvoice.

  • if thats true then...wow

  • I disagree, I just saw him last night. His high notes were amazing. Shook his hand, too.

  • Yeah his high notes are amazing

  • yes a great neeley scream! To me it sounds like raspy falsetto rather than mix voice. Balsamo does it in easier-to-tell falsetto though. I have never heard anyone really belt this high G though. Some metal singers should try it!

  • lol Jo' I just covered this song!

  • Eric Adams should try it. ^^

Or perhaps DeFeis... Should be interesting, at least.

  • Wow, I love it.

  • i love this video

  • That is always "Beautiful" no matter how it's performed or when, it's performed, by Neeley, it never gets old

  • Ouch, that seems so painful and strained :S

  • that was amazing falsetto

  • great voice! great ted

  • whoowee he's still got it!!

  • unbeliavable.

  • im a big fan of ted, and his voice has changed very much, but still sounds like for 30 years ago !!

  • amazing still after 20 years!!!!!

  • !!!...fucking awesome just as good as when he made the film and he's getting on a bit now he is soooooooo unbelievable

  • its Ian Gillan's voice (Deep Purple) in the film

  • erm...huh?

  • No it's not... It's Neeley's voice in the film...

  • r u retarded?

  • My grandma has a falsetto teeth.

  • hahahahahha roflmfao that made me split my sides laughing

  • He using full voice with alot of twang to create an edgy sound.

in classical vocal terms it is mix voice in CVT terms(modern singing method) its called belting.

  • haha, touche

  • Actually it's not belting. It's metal-like neutral (loud compressed neutral with twang), with distortion.

  • Ted Neeley still has it!

  • AHHH Ted is AMAZING!!!!! he can still hit those notes and looks great! i love him so much!!!!

  • head voice

  • thanks, i thought so, cause whenever i sing it i go into my headvoice but his is so edgy and awesome and mine is so pure that it sounded totally different

i wish my head voice was edgy like his, lol

  • So wrong! That's is a mix. U mix your falsetto with your breast voice.

  • you are completely right

  • falsetto cannot be mixed with chest voice; falsetto is disconnected from chest and uses only the edges of the vocal cords.

This is a mix of head tone and chest tone, enabling extended range with both dynamic power and more texture than would normally be afforded with falsetto; it should resonate in the mask.

  • when he hits this note, is he in his falsetto, or in a mix, or what

  • That's is a mix
