800 new IRS agents to crack down on tax havens? Wouldn't it be easier to lower corporate tax rates? Which would keep business here and possible create new business. More jobs. Instead this could drive more Companies out of the U.S. If you develop a product to sell in the world wide market would you open your business in the U.S with a 50% tax rate or say Ireland with a 12.5% tax rate. Companies he is after have businesses abroad and in the U.S. This will just drive their U.S. part abroad.

Money not spent on gas would likely stay in the country and be spent on something else, increasing tax revenue in that area. There would also be less demand on the government for social services. The roads would have less demand on them and require less investment. Just changing zoning laws to go to a compartmentalized structure would cause new construction & repurposed buildings to conform with the framework over time.

The savings would be incredible. Less public transportation, gas stations, cars, tires, fuel, parking facilities, etc. would be needed, and fewer accidents would occur. The time and energy workers saved by not having to drive all over creation could be put to use raising their children, working more, staying healthy, etc. Fuel shortages, snowstorms, etc. wouldn't cripple production.

Zoning laws, imminent domain, tax incentives, location of highways, urban planning, municipal borders, public school placement etc. already exert a huge influence. How is zoning to promote this worse than zoning that promotes inefficiency?

It is easier to do this now because having so many workers unemployed and buildings empty increases flexibility.

We should increase production while cutting consumption.

Cut commuter time by reducing scale. Place worker residences next to businesses, kind of like a college campus. Saves massive time/money/infrastructure costs and reduces congestion for remaining commuters.

Eliminate most of the tax code. People would have more time to do productive things, could fire accountants and IRS workers, save trees, make fraud easier to detect, etc.

Cut real physical waste, not just shuffle wealth around.

I work in a liquor store in California. Cigg packs have gone up a dollar and some beer that is imported has gone up three dollars a bottle. Obama's solution is to make the poor pay more for the subsistence's that keep us sane? Sure, smoking and drinking is a bad habit, and people will still buy it, but it's still shameful to raise tax. He said he will cut 95% of americans taxes, but sales tax, tarriffs, and little special taxes like the sugar tax will make that big promise look like Shit.

Alex, most of the "deficit reductions" are tax increases, not spending cuts.

Obama wants to dismantle our nukes, and break commitments related to the missile defense shield. He also wants our ships to be small enough to enter rivers and conduct humanitarian missions, so look for destroyers and carriers to be cancelled in favor of tiny craft. I also expect he will use "modernization" as an excuse to not adequately meet the materiel needs of the Army and Marines when it comes time to rebuild.

Obama didn't claim he will slash spending by $2 trillion. Obama said he has "identified $2 trillion in deficit reductions" that can occur by the end of his first term.

Translation: Obama will let the Bush tax cuts expire, raise taxes on the "wealthy", raise the capital gains tax, and pull troops out of Iraq. Obama will raise taxes by about $1.5 trillion and save about $500 billion by not being in Iraq over the next four years.

He says the deficit will be 1/2 in 4 years. 1/2 of what though?
