  • I'm not mad at anyone. The fella just sounds like a typical deejay tool to me, 'This is gonna tear your face off?'. Get a grip my old china. His taste and the fact that I can lkisten to this for FREE after having bought the album is irrelevent and I reserve the right to think he sounds like a right knob. I've been listening to the Manics since he was in short trousers, the difference being that he can get a gig on radio with his abysmal deejay patter. Bravo.

  • That twat at the start needs a kick in the fucking stones.

  • @pigriser That would be Radio 1's Zane Lowe.

  • @pigriser What, Zane? what's wrong with Zane? you mad at him because he's interrupting your FREE SONG because he was the one who first broadcast songs from the album out of a desire to promote the manics, him having a good taste in music?

  • My god Zane Lowe, you really are a cunt. Excellent song, finally going to get this album

  • Probably the best album of the decade. Outstanding.

  • cant get enough of this song, it teared off my face and more!

  • Fucking amazing. They are literally one of the best bands in the world atm and they don't have nearly enough popularity.

  • can somebody tell me the name of the song on the chocolate spread add by manic street preechers it was out 2005

  • Peeled Apple's, NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL MUSIC!

  • Music is the monumental force, we are just the puppet's that play it.

  • Oh sorry for missing one ) in my last sentence after "not being a critic" part! and putting a ' in always! whoops! :D

  • The " against you and me" line in the second chorus is truly amazing, is that the right word to define that line? not the actual lyric but James singing and with the bass and rhythm guitar accompanying him is something else. Notice when he sing's that line in the first chorus he doesn't put as much into it ( not being a critic , but when you listen to him sing it in the second chorus that's what grab's you and never leaves.. that's why i love the Manic's sooo much they alway's surprise you..

  • this album is great. a looooot better than the new one.

  • This album is so beautiful and all of Richie Edward's lyrics. proud manics fan since 1990 and still going strong!

  • Like Smells Like Teen Spirit is the same as More Than A Feeling. This album contains many, i assume, deliberate moments of borrowing, mostly from the band's own back catalogue. Great first track, excellent album- it makes my top 15 of the decade.

  • @malkane316 Yes i agree with you. A classic track off a classic album.

  • Everytime I hear this song, I am totally blown away by it. Brilliant!

  • Love this track, one of the best off the album. It'll tear your face off!!!

  • Check this out.. when you plug in your earphone's put it in karaoke version, the chorus bit has virtually copied the four chord's used in the verse part in Drain You by Nirvana. Sound's nothing like Temptation either when the vocal's are cut out! Go check it out!

  • @jameyinegypt No its not? Drain You's Chords are Bb, D, G, C and Peeled Apple's are C, Am, G and Em. Get out

  • @SuperMegabar Okay! similar sounding then! who are your favourite band's then dude?

  • @Jolynekujo Fair point.

  • Don't know about that ! they are equally as good as the other. I think on Journal they are trying to recreate the glorious melodic punk feel that was written all over Nirvana's Nevermind like urban graffiti. More so then In Utero, track's like Peeled Apple's especially the chorus could have been borrowed from Nevermind ( the chorus part sound's like the four chord's used in the verse in Drain You! listen carefully)

  • @08reidn Fuck off you spammer

  • not even chomsky is spared the wrath of richey

  • im so glad they did this with richeys lyrics, the album is magnificent

  • If all the song's were identical to this on Journal then it would be the next Nevermind no doubt about that. James even sound's or sing's like Kurt in the chorus when he sing's Riderless horse's on chomsky's camelot, Bruise's on my hand's from digging my nail's out.

  • fuck off zane lowe

  • Do you think maybe "The figure eight inside out is infinity" means that no matter how you look at a situation it's not going to change? Like whether you look at the number eight upside down or inside out it never loses shape?

  • Also Van Goghs perfect circle... apparently Richey was obsessed with it... it drove a lot of artists insane.

  • Peeled Apples is a fantastic song from the album journal for Plague Lovers completley Awesome!

  • MirrorSymmetry: You are right about the similarity to "Temptation" but it was Heaven 17 not Human League! 4REAL..

  • the hook in the chorus is the human league's temptation

  • Slighty, a mixture of Temptation, only a little mind. And also the verse to Drain You by Nirvana, the guitar's are so Nevermind in the chorus .

  • Aahhh, Steve Albini produces only the best music =]

  • GENIUS

  • 4REAL ♥ xox

  • The best single if it was a single! this year and easily in the last ten year's, amazing track with element's of The Masses Against The Classes, Therapy? and obviously Nirvana. 10/10

  • Listen to the four chord's played in the chorus they sound identical to Drain You by Nirvana .. well almost. Stunning grunge track. Well Grungey influence . 10/10

  • This album deserves a lot more attention, i think it's great

  • @mizofan

To be fair, I'm glad it's only us REAL Manics fans that listen to this album. The mainstream would completely miss the intellect and emotion behind the lyrics.

  • @mizofan Nirvana 10/10

  • 4 REAL....

  • ♥♥♥

  • Manics beats Nirvana easely. The new album sounds great...

  • @onathanj Please do not compare. No point, they're both great

  • Comment removed

  • this is the best - no doubts about it

  • It Did Rip My Face Off!

  • God I love this song

  • This album is simply one of THE best they have produced in a long long time. And i mean they have brought out some great album's along the way. This track is up there with the best, a stunning ferocious beast of a track.

  • How dare you guys compare Nirvana to Manics? Nirvana is for teenagers.

  • yea, im 15, i love nirvana, my dad is 39, he loves manics

  • nirvana is for teenagers? are the manics teenagers? didnt think so, and if your a big enough fan you'll know that nirvana in utero is one of their fav albums ever, the reason they got steve albini to produce the new album, nirvana are fuckin amazin, end of!

  • that is very true

  • @brettka I guess the Manics would agree - oh wait, that's why they covered Pennyroyal Tea. I like both bands, and I'm not a teenager.

  • Oh yes, I forgot, they also covered 'Been A Son', so I guess that pisses on your bonfire a bit. UNLUCKY SON.

  • THE MORE I SEE!!!!

What a Band!? I mean Kudos lads, still goin strong XD

  • Great album great song its a breath of fresh air compared to send away the tigers and lifeblood good albums in there own way but nothing compared to this..

  • my mum came up with the best and quite probable idea. being that he could not quit but, he and the record company quit the band and he is now living in the outer hebs somewhere living in peace chilling out.

  • you misunderstand i think he may of planned all this to happen, the same way kurt kobain planned his legacy i think he knew the band would carry on after his disappearence all them years ago which makes me wonder........

  • Richey Edwards wat a genius. This album might all a part of his plan, i wonder if he has any more surprises

  • Yes it does and also the verse 's from Drain You , the heavy guitar's are so nevermind i think anyhow and the chorus would fit nicely on nevermind , it would!

  • its better than nevermind plus its more in utero

  • Better than Nevermind?! erm not sure about that, Nevermind is an astonishing album. Saying that Journal is a great album too, i just think the chorus wouldn't be out of place on Nevermind that's all. The rest of the track's have so much of a different sound though..

  • i always found nevermind boring really to be honest i think everything about in utero is much better.

  • The manics are fucking great...

  • I thought this Band sold out a bit after Richey's disappearance... But this ROCKS!! Will def check out new album.

  • Don't think they sold out, they just got to breathe a little after the bible, hope you enjoy the new record.

  • Get your head fixed, this is an amazing album. You are talking garbage.

  • Sean Moore is the best drummer in the world right now.

  • smirk

  • fucking awesome they so live up to the godlike genius award they well deserved

saw them at leeds last year and there was no rowdy crowd pushing at all just people standing there in awe cause they were just so awesome it was unlike anything id ever seen

  • fucking tune

  • Melodic, riffy, lyrical and hooky as fuck.

The lads right back to their best.

  • amazing!!

    like the manics should sound!

  • apperently this album is basically the stuff written by the band member who dissapered

  • Yeah, it's all Richey Edwards' stuff. Usually the credit is split with Nicky Wire, but not on this one.

Some of the lyrics I've found a bit impenetrable, but there's some amazing stuff on there (Jackie Collins Existential Question Time 'Tonight we beg the question, if a married man fucks a Catholic does it mean you have gone to seed or does it mean you owe him nothing? Oh, mommy, what's a sex pistol'?

  • i don't know which album you've been listening to, because Journal For Plague Lovers is the best thing they've done since 1994

  • So YOU could produce more effective melodic genius could you? WHAT do you class as decent music then? personally I think YOU are talking CRAP! this album is something you could only dream of making. I will give Journal For Plague Lover's 10/10 now it has finally grasped me completely.

  • No it wasn't , it is not bland . Ohh get you! resort to swear word's! Go back to school and learn to speak proper grammar. and check up on your spelling too! I bet the manic's love you! haha! DON'T REPLY.

  • Why are you saying that for? what have i said to offend you?

  • I think you're the idiot here, this album is a classic in my OPINION. Could YOU write an album lyrically and musically of sheer brilliance? didn't think so! so shut up!

  • just to let anyone who lives in uk that jdb is being interviewed on bbc1 breakfast at 8:50am!!! or 9am!!!but he is definatly on there.peace!!!

  • A STUNNING ROCK CLASSIC, chris p. 10/10.

  • Verse guitar riff sounds a bit like 'Bad Seed' by Metallica (and a few other songs. probably)

  • Went off the manics for a bit after the last album, but this is a great song.

  • The chorus reminds me of Heaven 17s "Temptation".

  • I see where you're coming from: the chorus sounds like the verses from 'Temptation'!

  • WOWEE

  • perhaps you should listen to the holy bible or know your enemy. it really isn't that different to that style. which - holy bible was likely influenced a little by nirvana, sure. but that was 14 years ago.

i think maybe penroyal tea from in utero - possibly a vague resemblence. but i agree - not really nevermind.

and nirvana just sound like some of the pixies, and many pacific northwest bands of the late 80s. nirvana merely made it commercially appealing as kurt was a good song writer.

  • Hmm funny I thought we would be having discussions about The Manic Street Preachers, not Nirvana. Funny that.

  • BIG album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the chorus seems almost identical to the beginning of heaven 17s temptation. give it a listen and you'll see. ive no problem with it tho, if i was to ever write a song i would have ripped the beginning of temptation cos its better than the rest of the song. anyone agree?

  • Yes it does a bit, also sound's like drain you by nirvana in the chorus too.

  • this always sends a shiver down my spine. awesome song.

  • Ok so a bunch of you have read the NME interview!!! If you're a real fan BUY the fucking album and make your own opinion. In my humble opinion the Manics are better than Nirvana! much better.

  • the new album really isn't that good.. it's incredible!. very very reminiscent of the holy bible in both atmosphere and style. definitely their best since everything must go, i guess it says a lot about just what an effect richeys lyrics have on the band, as this the first one since then to feature his lyrics

  • I recon its as good if not better than holy bible :D cant wait to get it afta listening to it all on the tinternet.

  • Thumbs up for this album. For me it doesn't quite match up to The Holy Bible but it's still a very very nice effort. I'm glad to see Manics have found their confidence again... shake the ground guys!

  • Nice and heavy. If the album is as good as Send Away the Tigers it will be superb.

  • I got my copy of the album in the post today, two days early, ITS AMAZING!

  • i'll second that, i read on the Manics website that the signed copies were done by James,Nick and Sean individually over a period of 4 days, absolutely over the moon with my signed copy!

  • Stunning album, cant wait to hear it live

  • This is going to be album of the year for sure.

  • I hard once that Richey's lyrics were hard to writer melodies for, as they were free-form poems, essentially.

  • You try singing "images of perfection, suntan and napalm" in about 2 and a quarter seconds.

  • packs the same sort of punch as generation terrorist, just a huge step up in lyrics. a natural progression

  • Anyone hear 'temptation' by Heaven 17 in the verses or is just me?

  • This song is great cant wait for the new album, awesome stuff.

  • Cant believe the supermarkets have banned the album cover and placed a white sleeve over the artwork. Hopefully this will make people want to pick it up look at it then buy it.

  • Bloody joke aint it.

Lets all go and take the covers off!

  • was that Riderless Horses on Chomskys Camelot?

    wow

  • this album is getting rave reviews from all the critics. I'm definitely purchasing this.

  • Why don't U judge it for yourself....

  • well, from what I've heard so far, their new material is certainly surpassing their previous albums. This could quite possibly be the Manic's greatest ever album.

  • pun of the week

  • it does sound a bit like nirvana, so what its still a cracking song

  • What are ye going on about. Not a fucking thing like Nirvana. I hate the way people try to knock something even before it's released. Not clever. I hear nothing else remotely brilliant at the moment. We live in a world where people pay 136 quid to see Britney Spears and Girls Aloud selling any product thrown at them. Okay sorry, maybe an overreaction. Then again maybe not. Rock on Richey James Edwards. You aint dead yet.

  • Totally agree..comparing to Nirvana is insulting Richie and the Manics.Niirvana were monotone and bland and lyrically nowhere near the intelligence of the Manics..

  • Having slight comparisons to another band doesn't make it a bad thing. Besides, the raw Nirvana sound is there and is like to be there - Albini is producing.

I am really looking forward to this album though, the first Manics album since This Is My Truth.. that I've really been curious about.

What a mistake I made last time though.. hah.

  • Listen to Heart Shaped Box, then say Nirvana are bland

  • You seriously gotta listen to Something in the Way, then Tourettes, and your still not anywhere close on the scale of the influences and sounds nirvana covered, saying they're bland is an incredibally ignorant statement.

back on topic: I was unsure what to think of the news that the manics were recorded Richeys last lyrics, but I actually really like this song, and I'm definetely getting the album.

I like to think that richey is proud, wherever he is.

  • That's my point, In Utero is in my top 5 albums

  • I know, I was elaborating on it., in utero is certainley an amazing album

  • "That's my point, In Utero is in my top 5 albums "

    ...You keep a list?

  • 1. The Downward Spiral - Nine Inch Nails

    2. OK Computer - Radiohead

    3. Origin of Symmetry - Muse

    4. In Utero - Nirvana

    5. The Shape of Punk to Come - Refused

Honourable mentions to Animals by Pink Floyd, Marshall Mathers LP by Eminem and The Holy Bible

  • i definately agree with your number 1 choice.the downward spiral is also my all time fav album.trent is a legend!!!!peace!!!

  • Ok computer isnt even in my top 20 ....anyone can write songs about love and flowers not honesty

  • They didn't write songs about love and flowers. They wrote about a dystopian world where technology has gone too far

  • Could you shutup about Nirvana please. This is about The Manics.

  • Of course, it is the manic street preacher's page isn't it?! just it has some great nevermind moment's on here ! ok ok!

  • Thank you and i totally agree with you there, jameyinegypt keeps harping on about how every song on Journal For Plague Lovers sounds like Nirvana or Hole or whatever, i'm sorry but it does do your head in after a while.

  • Richie and the Manics loved Nirvana. To quote Nicky Wire in NME "The frit time we heard Nirvana we were completely floored-and completely gutted becausethey were so good...We were all obsessed with In Utero". There was even a picture of Kurt Cobain on the wall of Richie's flat aroun the time of his disappearence.

  • Oh come on she bathed herself in a bath of bleach is clearly influenced by nirvana, the chorus is so nevermind i think anyhow, and peeled apple's chorus sound's similar to the verse used in drain you it clearly show's so there!

  • Sorry but please stop going on about how every Journal For Plague Lovers song apparently sounds like Nirvana or Hole or whatever, i don't see it myself.

I just like to listen to the album and enjoy it without thinking 'this song sounds like such and such'.

  • Hey! woah! i didn't say EVERY song , peeled apple's chorus has a nevermind sound to it ok? and pretension/repulsion clearly sound's like a hole track off live through this . And she bathed herself verse in utero chorus nevermind a bit anyhow! there are load's of influences on this gem of an album. sorry i will shut up now. ok but they possess the same kind of power nirvana had , i think anyhow.

  • Sorry that i said EVERY song 'ALL APOLOGIES' see what i did there? er...NEVERMIND, oh there's another one look! sorry i could'nt resist, yeah i kinda see what your saying. No hard feelings?

  • Ha ha , ok no hard feeling's dude peace and all that! did you get the vinyl and normal album ? i got my deluxe signed cd's!

  • No i didn't get the vinyl version of the album 'cause i haven't got my turntable anymore, i did order the Signed 2 CD Deluxe Special Edition of the album though and unknown to me at the time my sister had also ordered it for me for my birthday so now i've got two copies of the Signed Edition which is pretty cool!

I haven't got the original 1 CD version of the album yet but i will be ordering it sometime next week, and of course Bag Lady is on there too isn't it.

  • I think the chorus almost sounds a bit like the chorus from "Sleepflower" (which is another kickass Manics song and also an opening track).

  • am with you all the way..just listen and enjoy..

  • That's right!

    Cheers!

  • Didn't quite "take my face off" Zane, but this is a fantastic opening track to what looks to be another great album from the Manics. BRAVO ! ! !

  • about time the manics got back on form etmg was a great album everything after that was so shite i really went off them but this sounds really back to the old manics i love

  • Good to hear Manics going back to their roots. look forward to the album!

  • This is fantastic!

  • "Manic street preacher's = the new Nirvana. and this album combine's bit's of Nevermind and In utero on it. 10/10" Have you actually ever listened to The Holy Bible?

  • Yes i have and it rock's hard. she is suffering , faster, mausoleum, ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforonedayitsworldwouldfallapart phew! and yes are genius. I meant there are track's on here that sound a LOT like Nirvana , like she bathed herself.. and peeled apple's but also it sound's a LOT like manic's too. Point made?

  • For a start even though I know Albini produced In Utero, I'd say this album sounds absolutely nothing like either Nirvana album. I'd give The Holy Bible the award of being a perfect sister album to In Utero (which of course does neither party any favour).

It's more like the band has taken all their early post-punk influences (PiL, Joy Division, Birthday Party, Wire, Magazine, etc.) and put it into a blender with their more popular sound.

  • Whoa! hold on! Manic Street Preachers = the new Nirvana?

Sorry but i don't think so, i'm a huge fan of both bands but i wouldn't say the Manics = the new Nirvana, hell no!, and i'm pretty sure Nicky Wire would say the same.

And the other thing? IN UTERO yes, NEVERMIND no.

  • In these plagued streets of pity, baby you can buy anything!!

  • Comment removed

  • What? Ur only realising this now about Zane Lowe? Come on. Great raw shit from the Manics more to the point.

  • welcome home richey x

  • I really wasn't expecting something like this! Hopefully the album is this good! Anyone going to their gig in Brighton??

  • James voice "to produced"...

    No need for that.

  • great song but it didn't tear my face off. Zane Lowe lied to me

  • i think its one of their best

  • this song get's better and better each time you listen to it!! nearest you will get to having nirvana back with us. classic album too! so 10/10 for song and 10/10 for album as well.

  • I would like to second the comment about Zane Lowe being a 'cunt'.

  • I smell a Holy Bible sequel coming!

  • Been to Zane Lowe's Crib...he only has 3 CD's ! He's a Fake..who talks a load of Insincere Bollocks

  • fuckin' good tune! :D love Manic so much! :D

  • Anyone going to the gig at the Barrowlands?

    Can't. Wait.

  • yes ^^ x

  • See you there! :D

  • XD It's the first date on the tour isn't it? The First Time Nick will sing William's last words live. He's not looking forward to it...it's going to be emotional :( x
