just sounds like a usual G string lick - G string always has a gritty sort of tone to it on heavy guitars (like his Les Paul or even better a Paul Reed Smith McCarty)..

And Sammy's guitarist in The Wabos, Vic Johnson, plays mainly PRS guitars so maybe that's why they used it...they liked that gritty tone!
