I think for better or worse China needs unity in order to survive - let alone prosper. It's such a huge country and so diverse that the fear I suppose is if there isn't a strong central government holding the nation together it might simply splinter the way USSR (the former) did.
In this case the general idea might be that if 'strong' means communist or even (benevolently?) dictatorial, then well, so be it.

Bear in mind that for thousands of years China was governed by essentially Confucian, communitarian values; diminished freedom might not be such a hard pill to swallow.
That's maybe why China would take such a hardline stance towards Tibet: give way once and it's the beginning of the end.
Personally I feel modern China has had such a tragic history... what is there to say, at the end of the day? I couldn't even begin to understand half of it.

"Taiwan independence" is supported by a minority that's why Chen was voted out. Kuomintang today realizes the strength of the Communist Party and wants to peacefully re-join with the mainland. And if they ever did proclaim independence then they would be destroyed within days. USA would not risk a war with China because after all China owns the USA economy.
