Nuclear weapons are what have kept WW3 away this long. It still could happen of course, but there is little doubt that millions of lives have been saved because of the threat of nuclear weapons, especially between the U.S. and the USSR and now the Russian Federation. A world without nuclear weapons would be far from Utopia. They have not stopped all wars, but they have prevented many. A perfect example is Israel, they are surrounded by people who would love too see them dead, but....Nukes.

A nuclear bomb added to a long range missile can clean a huge city of the map.

It's not realistic to think you can get rid of every nuke. If by some mircle you could achieve this lofty goal the first country to obtain nukes again would then have a monopoly on them.

Ya, people aren't afraid of nukes being used to fight each other, but people are afraid of nukes being used to take hostage of whole cities or as vents of anger or redemption. The simple fact of hate and war is that it escalates. We don't want it to be able to escalate to a nuclear level. Frankly I'd like the max level of a war to be a slap fight between tight suits who hold to much responsibility for one human.
