I just got my ATR-6550 in today. It's actually a decent microphone like Erik said, I even bought the Zoom H1 Handy Recorder as well, and like he said, it was only $100.

But one thing that should be noted that he DIDN'T mention or he meant by saying it's just "ok" is that the -6550 is a MONO mircophone, NOT a STEREO. Want stereo, you need a 1/8" mono-stereo adapter I bought at Radioshack for $3. You don't get side-to-side differences but it'll make the sound even across speakers.

Actually, for all of those wanting a better camera rig, a tutorial on making the DIY steadi-cam rig was on Backyard F/X if I remember right. (was it?) If not, Makezine.com, the lovely makers of...er... :make magazine also have a tutorial on how to make a great steadi-cam setup for under $20

Actually, wouldn't the filmmaker-on-the-cheap want to stay AWAY from Apple (since they cost an arm and a leg, and frankly I'm not some hipster who thinks being seen with Apple gear at 3 times the price makes me look like a better filmmaker), especially when Android or WP7 actually comes with recording utilities either on-board or in their app stores? (and Android has removable media to make it easier to boot!)

@neothespian So, you DO think that pirated software usage is unacceptable, but still tell people to use trial version and be fine with it, actually paying no money to developers. Sure, your way is fully legal, but both keygen and trial version serve one aim - not to pay for (expensive) software. What's for me - I make no money with my videos and therefore feel no crime using some pirated soft. In the end copying != stealing, regardless to that copyrighter's stuff.

There is other ways to get good sound. One way is get a sonic ear and get a twin audio plug into your camera. The second is to hide a recorder on one of the actors with duck tape under the shirt. most phones and mp3 players have a voice recorder. And my final option. If you have more then one camera and if its an nice size not big hide that andjust record that for the sound not that you will get great, but at least youll get great sound

I would love the shoulder rig because i do handheld shots that do not turn out so well but with the rig i will have better control. With this i will make better short films. I recently got a camera dolly and I am using it for a FilmFight short and a shoulder rig would come in handy right about now.
