Space exploration and research is just as important as development on earth. Think of all the useful things we wouldn't have if it weren't for money spent to make space travel possible(smoke detectors, medical imaging improvements, aircraft engine improvements, advanced hydroponics, etc). Also bear in mind they had to open the camera aperture right up to catch the aurora, it's not _that_ bright, it wasn't that long ago that TV cameras couldn't pick it up at all. That's also why we can see stars in this clip.
