my grandpa bought one of these new and every time he took it to the shop the tires were worn on one side and he and the mechanic had no idea why. Years later he found out that my uncle (in high school at the time) had been racing it at a local oval track when he wasnt using it hahaha
@counterclockwise123 Sorry, the tires that were on the car at the time were never very much 'smokers' for some reason or another. We did try, and had fun for the moment, never to be forgotten.
Rest in peace, Blair M. Rendell (April 2, 1957 - April 14, 2011), the owner of this '69 Vista Cruiser. Hopefully, there will be another Skywagon waiting for you on the other side. I already sent two '69 Vista Cruisers there - hopefully, they'll be waiting for you.
I saw the video that Andrew made at Blair's funeral as you touched Blair's '69 Vista. He will be missed. Thanks for showing up - I wouldn't have been able to cross the border into Canada.
If it wasn't for Blair being taken from us too soon, I was really hoping to meet him if we ever got our Michigan campout back in operation.
@OldsVistaCruiser You are welcome Bill. I had to touch the car because I wanted to know Blair was there. He always helped me when I felt scared of things, and again, he did not leave me without comfort.
the 455s of 70 thru 72 were quite a bit more powerful. Mine has the smogger "J" heads which came on the last 3yrs of the 455s.... and with the tall gears in the rear axle it needs some "help" with the brakes.
I bought my 1969 Olds Vista Cruiser wgn in 1985 for $125 and drove it home. The guy had the car since it was 1 yr old, he said it had the trailer towing package, so it came with the 400 cid 10.5:1 compression and 4 bbl quadrajet. I stored it, and after 12 years of sitting, it sanded the points, verified spark, and it fired right up. I pulled the 400 to rebuild it, I dropped in a 425 Olds high compression - - burnout city! I know, I have always enjoyed sleeper cars! Does about 100 in a 1/4 mi.,
I have to ask, is the car still around your place, and can a movie of it be made? By the way, that was me doing this run in the car seen in this movie!
I wish Eric on That70s...would drive like that more often, LOL. These were good lookin cars even if not classified as wagons. Guinness world records at one time (&maybe still) had the 69 vista cruiser as the quickest "mass produced in large numbers" wagon! With a 455, 6.2 seconds to 60! These cars were heavy&nice riding, but not much more than a 442. At 4000-4200 pounds they can still be very fast when other wagons weigh near 5000--too heavy for real fast.
The Vista Cruiser didn't get the 455 option until 1970.
Standard in '69 for the Vista Cruiser was the "Rocket 350" 2-bbl which made an advertised 250 hp, and had a 9:1 compression ratio.
The optional engines in '69 were the Olds "Rocket 350" with a 4-bbl and a 10.25:1 compression ratio (310 advertised hp) and the "Rocket 400" 4-bbl (325 advertised hp), and that came with a 10.5:1 compression ratio!
See ... nhra (dot) com (backslash) tech (underscore) specs (backslash) classification. Great web, you'll love it. Original Blueprints from GM. Lookup car weights with all engines/trans's, hp variations, etc. You're right for 69 --- it does show a 325hp 400 as the top dog. I know they tested a stock wagon/455s at 6.2, and I saw the engine option on NHRA. But apparently I was looking at 1970 by mistake, and my source misworded the Guinness thing as 70. Maybe it was a 70 tested in late 69.
In the July 1968 issue of Car and Driver there is a one off 1968 Vista Cruiser with a 455. It does quote 0-60 in 6.2 secs and 1/4 mile times of 14.7 at 93.6 mph. This engine option was not available to the public until 1970. So if Guiness is quoting this it could and probably is referring to this car. This Car and Driver article was reprinted in a book called OLDSMOBILE MUSCLE CARS 1964-1971 published by Brookland Books see page 41.
Thank you very much!!! My memory is VERY accurate, but it's been 20 years. I did not read it in Guiness but I read it in a Olds Hot Rod magazine of some type 20 years ago. In that article I remember they mentioned Guiness, and I KNOW FOR SURE they mentioned the - 6.2 secs, 455, 68 or 69 vista!---because those 3 things freaked me out! So it had to be your car!--that was not available to public till 1970 when the 455 was offered in vistas.
just looking around and found my olds book and found you to be right! Good to know people like you ar out their. another thing do you have you own PARTS AND ACCESSORIES CATALOG. ILLUSTRATION CATALOG.
You seem like a spec guy, like me. The first web I gave you was more for the car. But if you want more on the stock engines itself year by year - hp, valve size, cam lift, dished or flat top pistons, piston deck clearance, casting numbers, carb type/setup and production number, head cc, etc ... here's a web for that too ------ nhra (dot) com (backslash) tech (underscore) specs (backslash) engine
Bill, Thanks! Awesome site! Always looking for pics & info on Vistas. But as good as google is, it doesn't guarantee every pic will pop up. I really like that site, lots of variety from "mild to wild" vista's. I hope to own one of these some day, they're good looking, spacious, & the weight is reasonable enough to have a "real rod" with something like a 455. Because, I had a 77 Custom Cruiser about the same weight with a 403, and I had running real well. Dave in Kansas City
I had a 77 Olds wagon w/403 that I had smokin the whole high school--long story on why it kicked ass, LOL. It was a Custom Cruiser and also about 4000-4200 pounds. So weight/performance wise I have 2 options when I build another one, but I'm starting to get partial for these good looking 69-72 Vista Cruiser/Lemans wagon bodies. I have a 73 Grand Prix now with a 455 that weighs about the same as these wagons.
I hope to someday build--fullsized Olds wagon w/500cidOldsV8. Should run 11s easy with nothing special sacrificing engine life. My goal is-highest surprise/embarrassment for ricers, so hopefully they commit suicide if their girlfriend sees them lose to a BIG wagon! If ricers catch up with technology, I'll mildly turbo it & maybe hit 9s. Watch this "same body" pontiac run 11s with way less - do a youtube search for ""71 LeMans Station Wagon at Strip, Run #7, 11.60 at 115 + mph""

No problem! Yes, I'm a bit of a spec guy, but that knowledge mainly comes from my experience as owner of three 1969 Vista Cruisers since 1982.
I'm also "Moderator East" (co-president) of the GM Skywagon Club. You can see our club's website at VistaCruiser(dot)com.
