The emotion in this video gets me everytime, especially neils pause of silence at the end, They loved Robbie Whelan aka Right field from the signals album
only bad part i can say about rush is that... they had a weird period of synthesizer that wasn't really needed : P not to say it was bad it just... would've been a lot better if they stuck to bass guitar drum
As the Derby approaches, Paul is determined to learn the winner. Concerned about his health, his mother rushes home from a party and discovers his secret. He has been spending hours riding his rocking horse, sometimes all night long, until he "gets there", into a clairvoyant state where he can be sure of the winner's name.
may i once more thank you trio of gentlemen who after years of therapy and reworking rewording refining redefining... it has come to me. thanks for the clarity in 2011, for this all can almost finally be understood.
i love GUP, but idk why. yes, pretty much all the songs on it are great, but i also like it cause for some reason, imo, it just sounded so different (kinda started their "dark theme" phase), and also cause i first heard it at a weird place during a weird time in my life, so it holds a special and quaint place in my heart and mind. i remember the time so well, and it was fitting for what was going on at the time, this was all just last summer too, lol
@321charly321 smells like chickens and 100 dirty mexicans and a caravan or is it a deer crossing wait it's a kite sighting nah it's a starling nah we never seen nuttin honey yes deer in headlights bigh
My drum teacher LOVED Rush when I was a kid. Never got into them until now. Thank God the music lives on, even after silly videos and goofy dancing fades away.
The cinematography in this video is probably the best of any of Rush's videos. I don't know who directed it or who the cinematographer was, but the cut-aways to the accident scene and the funeral viewing have Hugh Syme's influence all over them, (not surprisingly), and are actually quite beautiful and haunting.
if you ever read "visions" by rush.. this was a breakup album (projected) you can hear how bad they want it with every note. feel the rush! they are truly professionals.
I've always insisted on liking any Rush release. Even if it means listening to it over and over until I get it. When I do, I wonder why it took me so long. It's sometimes a challenge and I feel good when I meet that challenge. THAT is what makes Rush great. Their fans expect that challenge.
I've always been a big Rush fan. But every time a new Rush album comes out (since mid 80's), I usually don't "appreciate" it, until many listens. I'm used to it now.
I think there is so much going on... it take a few "repeat's". Either that or it's subliminal messages (ha ha). These guy's are still amazing.
@Happyrein All of Grace Under Pressure is dedicated to the memory of a guy named Robbie Whelan. According to "The B Man", who wrote a book about Rush and was very much present during the makings of this album, Power Windows and Hold Your Fire, the song Afterimage is directly about Neil's feelings at the time. Also, on their live CD "Different Stages" the lines "Suddenly you were gone from all the lives you left your mark upon" were dedicated to Neil's wife and daughter after they died.
@schmittelt hay hello was wachting this song and seen the reply i thank you a alot / don't know any thing about rush other than the fantasic sounds that they have played for us out here / i feel for you Neil dont think i could be strong nuff to keep playing rush
@Happyrein If you can, watch "Beyond the Lighted Stage" It'll tell you loads about Rush if you want to know. It talks about Neil's loss and how it was dealt with.
@robadiddydingdong That's how it happens. Past, present, future. In that order, in most instances( in objects with singularities, direction of time flow is up for debate). A song comes out and means one thing, events happen and the meaning changes and it becomes attached to something else.
@sbrush fan, Grace under pressure is a hugely important Rush album which moved them away from analog rock and towards the digital age. Cheap sounding synths? transistor Guitar? you are not really a Rush fan because if you were you would love every rush album. Insipid lyrics? you are obviously an IDIOT if you could call any Rush album a turd..
@sbrushfan, you must not be a huge rush fan if you have come damn close to throwing them out cause of one album. listen to red sector a and the body electric. i dont mean the music either read the lyrics they are some of the most profound songs they played in the 80's.
Don't know the reality of living in Canada but Rush has to be among Canada's best ambassadors;over 35 years of top notch musicianship, never a bad word about anyone from them.
Grace Under Pressure was the first RUSH Album I ever Owned in 1984, I was 12, that was the Summer I started playing Drums.Love that Album and Power Windows that followed in 1985.
i agree, also presto & roll the bones are so underated. they look soooooo young, it's scary!! it will be a very sad day in my life when the guys finally give up the music and touring.
They still have 2 more albums they are planning to make. Yeah, In my lifetime, I grew up with Test for Echo, Counterparts, Vapor Trails, and Snakes and Arrows. That's why I like these albums more than the 70's and 80's Rush. Don't get me wrong, I still like the old Rush. But, it's funny that we like songs we grow up with. :)
they're like a group for different generations. i first heard 'trees' in 1980 and that was it, hooked! 30 years listening to the same group and still delivering amazing work like 'snakes'. i listened to 'counterparts' recently after a long time and it sounded so fresh and new and this, i think, is what makes rush so amazing.
I agree!...Keys come in strong, no room for bass almost..This songs just bleeds emotion..Tough album for them to produce, and took alot of chances...I love them all.
I have to agree. IMHO, "Grace Under Pressure" is almost a total stinker. Production so clean you eat off it, forced atmosphere (they never had to force anything, so why do it now?), cheap-sounding synthesizers and transistor guitar, not to mention some truly INSIPID lyrics (Red Lenses? WTF?) all add up to a total turd of a record. Just the fact that I'm a huge Rush fan means I won't throw it away. But I've come damn close.
i dont think its a stinker at all, as a matter of fact, its my favorite rush album. the synthesizers sound amazing, i dont know what youve been smoking. i just think it needs more bass, because its really thin sounding, thats it
This song is awesome! And this band is the greatest ever. XYZ is exactly right. NOBODY will be able to truly do musically what Rush did: Make whatever music they friggin' wanted to and rule!
This tune was way to deep for folks when it came out, today it just sounds timeless. These guys will be appreciated as time goes by, its already starting to happen to some extent and will only grow. The path this group carved cant be repeated, its just not possible.....
Rush's best years 1978-1989. They were right near their peak with this in my opinion. People who frown upon this record because of keyboards just simply don't understand music or who Rush was in 1984. This isn't the 1974 Rush or the 1977 Rush or even the 1981 Rush. This was the Rush that opened new doors for their careers and showed just how utterly fucking talented they were. Grace Under Pressure is pure brilliance.
I always loved these lyrics. Such a beautiful tribute and eulogy. Anyone who has ever lost a dear friend or family member will shed a tear for them here...
One of the reasons Lifeson is such a GREAT guitar player is because of what he can do in spite of all that keyboard stuff. He fills in. All of his guitar stuff is superb.
"Grace Under Pressure" is my least fave record. I always thought it to be the black sheep of the Rush discography. Too slick, too little guitar (the synths overwhelmed it), and the some of the lyrics were really trite (like "red lenses"). THIS, however, is a good song; a nice, tense rocker.
"Afterimage", "Red Sector A" , and "Between the Wheels" are my faves from "Grace Under Pressure". I think it's because they all had really cool Bass/Synth parts.
i finally found it i saw a clip of this when Rush was getting into the Canadian hall of fame on the R30 dvd and i could tell what cd it was on how Geddy's hair was and i search every song and found it 6 months later and it was worth the wait!
One of my favorite songs off the Grace under pressure album. These guys are great musicians. We are lacking this kinda talent on the radio today. Rush is just awesome!!!!
Great song....I remember that "Grace under Pressure" was the Rush 1st album in Peruvian edition (you could get it at any disco store). It reminds me of my days at the university....I used to, and I still do, wonder how these guys could make such great music.....and I agree wit gondo01....real professionals, normal guys who are still together after over 30 years playing as a band. I saw them here in Toronto (Snakes&Arrows tour), fantastic!!
Niel Peart has a very very big drum kit, he is even got drums, and cymbols behind him. he is a very very good drummer. i hope to be able to play like him and john bonham someday. i have been playing the drums for about 3 years now.
No tattoos and leather pants for these guys. Just plain old shirts and a scarf for Geddy. These guys do it for the music, not for the image. Real musicians.
NOBODY in rock music consistently comes up with more unique guitar parts, structure, and solos than AL...and his tone is always PERFECT for the song! Pure fookin' genius!
"During our second stay at Le Studio, while recording Moving Pictures, I fell in love with the Laurentian winter. The assistant engineer, Robbie Whelan, a curly-haired, bright-eyed, enthusiastic young Englishman, introduced me to cross-country skiing, and I used to follow him through the snow-covered woodland trails. When we approached a downhill section, I would hear Robbie's whoops of excitement up ahead.
On his way to work at Le Studio one morning in early 1983, Robbie was killed in a car accident. "Afterimage," was written for him." - Neil Peart, Roadshow
ALSO: The opening lyric was quoted in the liner notes for Rush's 1998 live release, Different Stages, as a dedication to drummer Neil Peart's daughter and wife, who both died in 1997/98. The memoriam is as follows:
"Suddenly...you were gone...from all the lives you left your mark upon..."
Beautiful memories of riding in the car listening to this on a cassette summer 1984 on my way to the Louisiana World's Fair in New Orleans. I remember my first boyfriend and I smooching to this song in the back seat and they guy looked just like the kid in the Subdivisions video. Wonder where he is today. # 1 SONG FOR ME. Grace Under Pressure was my soundtrack for 1984
Ditto! I save two weeks worth of allowance and road to the record store on my bike for a cassette. I played it on a tape recorder before I got a stereo or a walkman!
No one give a flying f#%k about what your old man thinks about Geddy's looks!!!! Geddy is a great person, talented musician, and obviously his wife of 32 years is not very worried about how you and your old man don't like his looks!!!! GROW UP!!!!
The emotion in this video gets me everytime, especially neils pause of silence at the end, They loved Robbie Whelan aka Right field from the signals album

Alex wears leather pants nowadays though...He's earned them!

NOBODY in rock music consistently comes up with more unique guitar parts, structure, and solos than AL...and his tone is always PERFECT for the song! Pure fookin' genius!

I like this and Kid Gloves best off that one. Also dig the dismal feel the content presents. I guess the cold war in evident in there.

In loving memory of Jackie and Selena.

My dad says Geddy Lee looks like Ichabod Crane.
He also looks like he has a fake nose and glasses on the Permanent Waves album. Kind of funny.
gtaylor11 3 years ago
No one give a flying f#%k about what your old man thinks about Geddy's looks!!!! Geddy is a great person, talented musician, and obviously his wife of 32 years is not very worried about how you and your old man don't like his looks!!!! GROW UP!!!!
MargoMitchell 3 years ago 3
well he doesnt have a fake nose or glasses. but he does have looks:D
