Yes it is, because the ID argument is a distortion. Haeckel may have fudged his drawings, but this was unnecessary because later when we became able to take pictures of actual embryos, they all showed the same similarities that Haeckel imagined. But of course, you can't be retroactively right.

Yes it is, because the ID argument is a distortion. Haeckel may have fudged his drawings, but this was unnecessary because later when we became able to take pictures of actual embryos, they all showed the same similarities that Haeckel imagined. But of course, you can't be retroactively right.
The only thing Haeckel was actually wrong about was his recapitulation theory.

No. The ID people make the same distortion that Haeckel did in the opposite direction; they downplay the similarities. All the photographs show is that embryos don't resemble adult creatures in their heritage, which was Haeckel's hypothesis: embryology recapitulates ontogeny. At several stages of early embryos, they really do look that similar.

Haeckel's hypothesis of recapitulation was that embryos go through a creature's evolutionary history, not just that they don't resemble adult creatures.
Also, Haeckel DID exaggerate the similarities a bit, though that doesn't change the fact that the similarities he based them on do exist, as any modern embryologist could attest to.

I’m arguing with a guy who claims evolution (his word for common descent) is a religion based on faith, where any evidence is evaluated in light of the presupposed “belief system” of evolution. I’ve asked him to talk to a paleontologist, he refuses. I’ve shown him the phylogenetic tree and mitochondrial DNA sequencing, he’s thrown them In my face. Any pointers someone can lend me?

I know what theory means in scientific terms. All I am saying is that evolution isn't proven. I am not dismissing evolution as a scientific theory (even though that's what it is). A deity cannot be proven/disproven so lets leave that out of scientific debates. Why don't we shape our view of the world on the things that we can prove. I'll never say there isn't a god but since there isn't any proof for it, I have to lean towards disbelief until I'm shown different. Otherwise its a slippery slope to believing anything.

I like to get to the root of things, and ask where the Christian faith originated and where the idea of creation actually originated. I think that religion could possibly be disproven, even if there is a little bit of truth mixed in, but that is a whole other topic.
