Iran and Iraq had a long standing border dispute over some areas in the south near the Persian Gulf area of Iraq...but you are right saddam escalated a minor border disagreement into a full scale war.
The world didn't have much sympathy for Iran after their illegal seizure of the US embassy...that really made Iran look like a crazy country...and all those crazy street demonstrations made Iranians look like rabid wild people.

The Iranian revolution was a nationalist and socialist revolution in the beginning, not a religious one. War had already erupted when Khomenei came in to power. (He is responsible for a lot of deaths, but not because of this war).
There are a lot of reasons why US puppet Saddam would attack an Iran in turmoil, but not very many why an Iran in chaos would attack Iraq.

1) That if Iran did lose the Iran-Iraq war then why did Iran reject on 2 occasions, formally, an offer of ceasefire by Iraq (1983, 1985) and only in the face of domestic and United Nations pressure accept it on a third occasion in 1988 on a bilateral basis?
2) And why did (if Iran lose the war?) it take up to 3 weeks for the Iranian military just to leave Iraqi territory, where it was in fact Iran who was invaded in 1980 by Iraq?

In the war, the west supported Iraq, with the backing of the US, not because Iraqi's were just, but for political interest reasons.
This bias and side picking is apparent in this particular British documentary. The British strongly sided with Iraq. What you see is therefore a "biased" documentary. Images don't lie however, but the story telling could. There is still truth to this doc, just watch it with the thought in mind that it is biased in its commentary, not the video footage.
