There is no secret in the meaning of this song, it is basically an image of the God of the old testament and mandkind till Jesus arrives. The images are wonderful, the sound is good, Dylan sings better than ever, the rythm great and the guitars bright. I specially like this image of this god as a strange big joker far away from everyone dancing to the mysterious tune of a nightingale by the light of the moon. It also seems that he worked very much on this song and it became very dense.
@sinpeyg im not condoning immature comments made against you, but dylans music , especially this song, transcends all the bullshit of politics, the lyrics speak to everyone differently, the video is simply one interpretation, as for Luther King, an idol undoubtedly, but no peach himself, adultery and the like, but as I said it doesnt really matter, this video should be enjoyed for what it is, not what the video is
@SnipeyG id just like to point out SHUT THE FOOK UP ASSMUNCH, this is Bob Dylan singing, Go to politics chat with your problems, I came here to watch a classy singer / song writer doing his stuff, wipe your ass as you leave please! Thank you
@woodyfurball I'd just like to point out that you have made a great point. How dare you mofo's gibber crap while Bob sings one of his very best. Piss off.
I think this song is a mixture of social commentary and a rejection of the teachings of Jesus. "Infidels" is the most Jewish album Dylan's produced, and I love it for that personally.
The lines "You’re a man of the mountains, you can walk on the clouds
Manipulator of crowds, you’re a dream twister" I like to tag to Jesus and his teachings. But who knows if he meant it for Reagan or Jesus. Fits either way in my opinion. Shalom!
I'm a massive, MASSIVE fan. But I find the lyrics to be a little second rate, like Dylans doing a parody of himself. A little similar to what I come up with when I attempt to ape his style. The delivery is passionate though, can't deny that.
I love listening to this album...this style recording is lovely...I dont know How it's done..but that"s what my ear's enjoy so much.....the varible sound recording styles with every album....hey... hint.. how .. about designing pictures to the John Wesley Harding song/story......? would anyone dare this......? Times are a Changing alright.....like my dad use to say.."a stranger CAN be a friend...you not yet know"unqoute...suddenly I got that Sinatra melody in my brain..strangers
Praise be, found the man himself; I don't mind cover songs , but I think it's sad & cowardly that people should try to promote their cover songs using various tricks to make one think it's the original. There is & will always be only one Bob Dylan!
I have been thinking quite a while about what this song means and in my opinion the title Jokerman refers to any false prophet and how they use religion to "manipulate" the masses as a means to an end.
I could go on and on about his references to Jesus, the Bible, mythology and paganism but the lyrics: "You`re a man of the mountains you can walk on the clouds You`re a dream twister" gives me a sense of someone who seems larger than life and can make "fools rush in where angels fear to dread"
@21tango12 It`s been racking my brain for a while as to what this song means. I`m pretty sure the phrase jokerman refers to false prophets and how they use religion to "manipulate" the masses. I could go on and on about the references to religion, the bible, jesus, mythology and paganism.
Out of interest I read somewhere that he wrote it whilst looking out over a riot in stockholm from his hotel window. Thoughts please
@ruennis Interpreting Dylan is difficult. Firstly, we have to consider context: what he was doing/what was the stimuli in his life at the time. Depending on the riots, this may have been a catalyst for the song. The album (from which this track was taken) was Infidels, and was written not long after Dylan’s conversion to Christianity. Many of the other tracks include similar Biblical imagery. The album makes many comments on the geopolitical situation at the time.
@ruennis This is what Dylan does best (The times they are a changin’ etc) I take the view, held by others too, that this is a song about taking heed of big claimants to either political or spiritual power. Dylan warns us several times to be on our guard. The “dream twister” line, not surprisingly, is accompanied by the visual of Adolf Hitler. Dylan wants us to consider well and not superficially.
@ruennis . “Jokerman” is like the “everyman” he represents any genuine leader of good. This figure is often considered an outsider or an idiot (hence the name Jokerman) but he is, in fact, the only one that see things for what they are.
@21tango12 Thanks for the replies Tango. I read that James Joyces` novel Ulysees was filled with hidden messages and metaphors which would keep scholars/critics questioning and debating for centuries. Dylans songs are of a similar ilk- the man is a genius
Bob Dylan é emblemático. Uma lenda viva da música universal. Profético e transcendental, consegue, como um mago-fênix que é, ressurgir das cinzas para ser imortal. É meu ídolo. Aliás, um ícone para todas as gerações.
