It is wrong to keep ANY animal in a Mall let alone in captivity. They don't even get any fresh air being cooped up in a damn mall. It's not right. The tank should have been much larger. There isnt enough room for all 4 dolphins in that tank. Maybe there is a reason why none of the calves lived. So that they wouldnt have to live through all that hell being cooped up np fresh air and being cramped.
you know how they get each dolphin to ignore the ppl and the stress and focus on the "tricks the perform for YOU"... they revoke their food prior to every show so that wen they give treats as reinforcement for the trick, they are more motivated to perform. no wild animal should be taken fromtheir home and put in a prison! no matter how big the tanks they will never ever ever compare to the ocean where theyre from.
I remember when I was 6 years old I saw the dolphins. Then we went on the submarine ride and they did have a diffrent tank. Then also they had sharks in there too as well as fish. I hate the simple fact that they are allowed to have so many animals in that mall.
i live in Edmonton and animals in captivity die all the time in zoos parks etc etc its sad but true and i miss are dolphins i was 10 when i first saw them on a school trip
Ya thats pretty sad... stupid human we are... now have seal... Sometime we can hear them crying very load... poor baby, kids may have fun, but they dont!
I've lived in Edmonton all my life. As a matter of fact, FOUR babies died, not just one. Both adult females, Maria and Mavis, died of indeterminate causes, and Gary died 9 months after Maria of an unexplained, sudden illness. Suicide was never considered as a posibility in any of the deaths.
@Orcinus24x5 i live in edmonton to. the dolphins were aksi ket into the water outside of there little pool the water with the boat in it. the died of all the copper fragments in the watter. Copper posioning from all the people that threw money into the water
Actually, that's not correct at all. Three of the dolphins died because of poor living conditions. The females never had successful offspring, they were all still-born calves, and they moved the sole survivor, Howard, to Florida, not California.
I can't believe the animals lived as long as they did in this small tank in a loud, bright indoor mall.. Absolutely no place for a dolphin to be! :( Very sad..
That tank is so tiny. Wow, I am shocked that it was legal to keep them all in there!
I don't think they moved the dolphins to a different tank. It would be too costly and time-consuming to transfer four dolphins everyday, several times a day, to a different tank, located behind the scenes. The dolphins remained in that pool, however the sea lions had a small cage, behind the trainer station where they could reside.
Actually the two tanks are connected... I know this for a fact... The dolphins were not left in the show tank 24/7... There is a much bigger tank where the dolphins resided when they were not preforming which was located "behind the scenes". If you road the Submarines when they were still running you would have seen it. As you could also clearly see the show tank...
I actually worked for WEM Marine Life with the dolphins. They were well treated and cared for. As for the sea lions, they are not dying and were in fact just given an excellent health review from CAZA (Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums). The flamingos were transferred to a breeding facility, they were not removed for health reasons.
If the dolphins were so well cared for, how do you explain the repeated still-born calves, and the deaths of three of the adults? And how do you explain the death of one of the seal lions en-route to the mall before the new exhibit opened?
@GrahamLeggett The Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums has zero credibility; it is entirely staffed by directors and officials of the very same zoos and aquariums that it certifies. Quite a conflict of interest. Additionally, many of the facilities they've certified have horrible track records that are well-established--like Marineland, the Greater Vancouver Zoo, and the Calgary Zoo.
@GrahamLeggett i dont doubt they are but i still dont thing they should be indoors it you going to have any cetacean in edmonton then get one that can take the cold its not fare to have them looked in a building. srry mate
I personally think it's sad to see these animals stuffed into that little tank, then two died within a year of each other, so there were two left, which wasn't much better.
All animals in captivity will live shorter lives than ones in the wild, we have to acknowledge this.
Also, West Ed is a commercial place, these animals probably brought in millions. It's not right, but I'm pretty sure they weren't really thinking of the wellbeing of the animals.
Dolphins in mall = possible worst idea ever. Sure, it'll be a crowd-pleaser! Friggin' awesome! Then they inconveniently start dying because hey, guess what, a mall turns out not to be a very good environment for them.
Actually, no. I spend the majority of my week at the mall and have for a long time and they take horrible care of their animals. The dolphins died for a reason. The sea lions are dying, the flamingoes had to be removed.
lol exxxxacttly! i second that! really! and yeah i love Dolphins but its nice they're at the mall but they're there like forever the rest of their lives and sucks to be them i guess. ah well.
Three of the dolphins died in the mall, and gave many still-births. The remaining survivor, Howard, was moved to Florida a few years ago and some sea lions were brought in to replace them. One of the sea lions died en route to the mall. :(
I was able to see the larger tank below tank myself on a special tour once. The lower tank was much larger thankfully. I was also able to see a memorial for the very first dolphin our of the four that passed away (Rosie was her name I believe). She died from swallowing some objects that were thrown into the performance pool by some of the people on the balconies. To echo Drphotonicman, may the deceased dolphins rest in peace.
One or Two ewere enough but how can you fit three dolphine in such a small space? The accident happens every where even with Dolphines in Florida, I was in Florida before, I know the fact.
What many people do not know, unless they have seen the documentary video about the dolphins at WEM, is they had another large tank in the lower level of the mall, and they were free to swim from one tank to another through a tunnel. They weren't confined to the tank visible to the public in the mall.
well, 3 out of 4 of the dolphins died at the mall. Howard was the only survivor when they finally decided to move him to another dolphinarium in Florida.
i loved those dolphins, its such a shame that their tank wasn't bigger and that they had a more natural looking enclosere. other than that they were well treated.
