When I watched this show as a kid, I thought playing high school basketball would be made up of running laps, jive talking brothas, and acapella doo-wop showers. Other than the laps, I was sorely mistaken.
@pippigladstone It used to be on TV Land back when the channel started in the mid 1990's. Last I saw it was on one of the sports channels like ESPN Classic
@saturnday im 14 and i used to watch this when i was a kid well at least the reruns i think they should bring it back on tv or make a new version of it on tv land or tbs or nbc
agreed. A show way ahead of it's time similar to another cult classic 'wkrp.' If this show debuted in say 1985 at height of the magic-bird rivalry in the NBA or later instead of 1979, imo it would have been a smash hit.
Also an early version of an reality show, dealing with issues of the day from gang violence-teen sex.
This a clip from the first season. From the 2nd season on, the co stars featuring haywood, hooks and 'salam' aka the other whites in the show was mentioned.
and shut up mosdef and get you facts staright you al sharpton wanna buffon wanna be on the race card.
In 1979, other than the Jeffersons and maybe Different Strokes how many tv shows even had blacks on their shows? It a shame but that was America in 1978/79.
@USAGiant Good Times was still on then, as was What's Happening!!. Then you had the shows with one black cast member or two, including Barney Miller, Love Boat, Welcome Back Kotter, Carter Country, Starksy and Hutch, Vega$, and WKRP in Cincinnati.
As for The White Shadow, it's still one of my favorite shows, and so far ahead of its time.
I remember they'd be in the showers after practice and then they'd all the sudden break out into a doo-wop acapella song. I was like, " Man, after practice we don't all the sudden become Boyz II Men- we just went home."
robert hooks son is in this call himself thorp. His name is kevin he went to produce a movie with wesley snipes call passenger 57 his dad had a role in the movie.
Damn, iuesd to be in love with the principal she was the finest black woman i had seen in a long time, but dis was the show back in da day ,i sho miss da 70s n 80s life was cool and safe .
Thanks Kareem for uploading this. This still almost 30 years after it's intial release on CBS-TV ranks as one of the top 10 sports-themed drama/series in TV history.
Like another struggling show(ratings wise)"WRKP" CBS screwed up on how to decide what audience demographic should watch it? It should have been promoted as a teen/young adult oriented drama than a basketball series.
Mary Tyler Moore should be in TV HOF for just creating shows like this, Hill St. St Elsewhere, WKRP & much more.
bruce paltrow was gwyneth paltrow's dad!
i believe he passed away a few years ago!

This was back in like 87. I had just graduated high school. Plus he's shorter than he looks on TV. He's like 5'9 - 5'10" tall.
And I once saw Coolidge at the Chuck E Cheese in Sun Valley CA. He was playing video games.
