I wouldn't say that Hannibal and Carl are the same at all....Hannibal was genius - that's what makes his character so chilling, the fact that he was far more than mentally capable of understanding the horrible things he did to people - he was brilliant, above average.
Carl is obviously mentally retarded, so he didnt really understand the wrongness of his actions. All he understands is that murder is a method of resolving his problems.
1st time i ever noticed you can see it behind carl,on the wall,i be doged i've seen this movie maybe 100 times, yes really, learn something in here that you didn't get at,or on dvr,or at the movie house.
I could watch this movie over and over, we all have a Carl in us, well not the hacking people to death, but the wonder and the kindness. Should have won best picture.
They use the soundtrack an interesting way in this movie. It stops suddenly at certain points-- like when Karl says flatly that he killed his mother, and here when he warns the serial killer not to say anything about the boy.
I was always surprised that my sisters liked this movie, but they hated the ending. One of them mentioned to me, "They should've ended it with him getting the mustard outta the jar."
Always a good ending to this film.....reminds me of Lt Willard (Martin Sheen) going to kill Col Kurtz (Marlon Brando) in the final scene of Apocolypse Now...with the Doors playing the "End". Doyle had it coming to him just like Kurtz..."a snail walking on the edge of a razor blade....the horror, the horror"....or "what are you doing with that lawnmower blade?"...."Carl"!!!!! Whack-a-Moley...yeah baby!!! That's good stuff!!!!!
Ok, now i know Doyle is an idiot. He knows Carl chopped up his mother 25 years ago. Carl enters with a lawnmower blade, sharpened to the hilt. Then Carl asks Doyle for the number of the police. Then, unbelievablely he comes right out and tells Doyle he aims to kill him with it!! Come on, Doyle wake up. He must've been pretty drunk not to defend himself. And I agree, everyone's last word to Carl is "Carl". Now, it's time for a bisquets with mustard. Mmmm. That tops off a good killing.
I live in Austin and went to a training here but across the street of it is the state hospital. I kind've want to wander over there one of these days and take a tour. Always think about that everytime I watch this movie. Not like you'd get to see anything involving people that stay there, but it would be interesting to learn about the place. I love this movie.
What I love about the role of Carl is he`s basic. He`s portrayed as someone that is supposed to be retarded with a low IQ. But as far as common sense goes he`s a genius. He knew there wasn`t a place for him in the world so he was willing to sacrafice his freedom for the love of his friends so they could be free. Except for the killing, if people used common sense the way Carl did it would be a much better world.
@dharmaseed thank you for the excellent observation. I am a musician who listens to film scores. Sometimes there is so much going on ...it really helps to have a special moment pointed out.
@jpstenino Happy to be of service! It wouldn't have been the same without that....talk about magnifying the underlying tension. Kind of like 'Adagio for Strings' in Platoon'.
I don't think the world was too big for Carl. If Doyle hadn't existed, he could've made it "out there". He had satisfying work and co-workers who appreciated him. He had an adopted family and friends who loved him and he loved back. He was doing a lot better than many so called "normal" people will ever do.
Actually, the message is pretty genius. It is one of the few instants of justified murder in movie history. He had no other choice, he either had to kill Doyle or Doyle might mess with the mother and child. Karl had no choice. Doyle was friends with the police, so that angle wouldn't work. Karl was expendable. He had to do it. I'm usually anti-violence, but there was no way out.
@buddinganarchist You are right on. Carl already knew he was not going to make it out in the world. He saw that his friend might get killed because of Doyle. He could not do anything about his little brother when he was young but he could sure dam well do something about his friend now. I agree. He had no other choice.
I was trying to remember where I have seen the other inmate...he plays a very sinister part in the movie " Breakdown"...with Kurt Russel..a very good movie.
@teacup6107 I need to see that for sure...Billy also plays a leading role..an amazing role in the movie "The perfect plan'..you will cry in this one...
Now what would've really put the icing on the cake for me, with this being a good movie and all - I wish some blood would've splatterd on to the lamp shade or something when he took out that asshole Doyle. This movie was very well played and directed on all parts. Classic along with Of Mice and Men.
@MzSunnyJeep I agree with you , they shoud of shown some blood splatter. I don't think it would of harmed the rating , isn't the movie rated R anyways?
This should be a classic.....I will look at it again...Karl Childers was a cool, calm, and collective little fellow...did what he had to do…turned himself in….had himself another plate of biscuits with mustered and went back home to his little room in the hospital for the strange and unusual....This movie should be re-

damn crazy ass dude but he did the right thing he got rid of that peice of shit he did right by telling the cops what he did cause if he ran he would have went to prison sence he turned himself in he can go back tot he hospital
@stacks6969allday - Problem is when you commit a violent crime you go to a mental hospital for violent offenders. Atascadero is one, or Metro in Norwalk. Not only do you got to watch out for the other inmates but you have to watch out for the employees also. That hospital Carl was sent to was not for the criminaly insane. It looked like Fairview State in Costa Mesa.
God, I love this movie. Thornton deserved an Oscar for Best Actor, but I understand why they gave it to Geoffrey Rush for "Shine". He was brilliant. Still, '96 was one of those years where they really should have had two actors share the win. They both deserved it hands down (kind of like in '91 with Anthony Hopkins ["Silence Of The Lambs"] and Robert DeNiro ["Cape Fear"]).
This is the first time I have seen this movie, told by a friend to check it out. I am glad I did it is an amazing movie and am going to watch again. Thanks :)
Carl is straight up cold-blooded. The way he calmly took Doyle out with that blade reminds one of Hannibal Lector. On top of that, he sits down and crushes some biscuits with mustard.
Thank You For Putting This Up, I Appreciate It.
