I was introduced to CSNY when I was too young to truly appreciate what they were all about, however their track Dark Star on an album entitled CSN released in 1977 used to evoke such emotion in me that I will never forget it as long as I live!
Since then, the harsh realities of life has numbed my senses somewhat but perhaps now is the time to start listening to them again...listening with intent.
Those with the biggest hearts often hide them safely behind a wall of hard exterior, particularly after having experienced the intense pain of the mediocrity of mind, heart and soul of this world's general populous.
What he gives, he gives through his music, and for me, that is enough to love the man like a brother, the visionary brother of a better world.
Thank you David for taking me there in your music to visit a time and place far beyond that I'll ever know. It was wondrous, it was life.
The vocals (at least Crosby's lead) were dubbed in 1991 for the CSN box set. He stills sounds great, but sings more "normally," whereas his 60's vocals have an otherworldly quality. My personal favorite version of this song is one of the acoustic versions with just him and Nash from their first duo tour, which you can find on Crosby's box set or "Another Stoney Evening."
@MinstrelOnTheRun That's really interesting- I always thought it was Nash's harmony that was overdubbed later, as his voice sounds much different than on other recordings in 1970. The two voices definitely sound a little off (but this seems to change when Stephen's voice comes in at the end)

They all had those kickass Martin's that sound like honey dripping off the strings on a warm summers day. Those vintage Martin's are so expensive I wish someone would send me the money to buy one. I was told 6 to 8 grand. My names Perry 214 470 8121 help a brother out.

Easily the best writing and performance of Crosby's recording career and one of the best C, S, &N songs of all time. Thanks for the images and fantastic audio.
Crosbys' voice is like no other, strong but sometimes touched with the witfulness of a child. And Nash had the gift of not letting his genius get lost in the magic of CS&N. Stills could rock a melody and when the 3 of them came together to create music; it survived the craziness of drug, drama, egos and life on the edge. I will always love these incredible artists and find joy in their being alive.

Crosby has quite a voice. It's somewhat perfect, yet I would say he's lucky to be alive. He had liver problems because of things he did when he was young so he had to have a liver transplant and there's a 50/50 chance of someone living or dying and he survived. But It's a very good thing that he is alive because without him CSNY and maybe The Beatles, Cream, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix and Elton John and a lot of other 50's 60's and 70's artists we wouldnt know where music would've have gone. <3
Yes this is one of the most beautiful songs they have done - this version is definitely the best of those I've heard. Takes me back all those years ago!
Great song! Great group!!! I use to smoke, with this as a background. as well all the rest of their music. I seen them at the Fox in St.Louis after I left the Army. Great harmony.... Those were the days. No viagra, no meds, Just your knees in the breeze and that throttle cranked back,

@simonj50 Crosby himself admits he was difficult in his younger years, but nowadays he and Graham seem like such fun and sweet guys. I always admired Stephen the most even though he and Neil could be spoiled brats.
@Larrymh07 LOL..Crosby is still as difficult..nothing changed.. NASH has had to put up with his nonsnese 40 years....Crosby bitches al lthe time..screams NOOO to fans after a show who want autographs and is generally mean. Nash is a true gentleman..ALWAYS
@Larrymh07 Thanks for the info, even thought it's bad news. I guess we shouldn't look at our musicians and expect their behavior to be as great as their music.
Totally agree - an absolute arse but the most beautiful voice ever bestowed upon a man. But check out the BBC live version of this - one of the most sublime things ever.
@BluezBro604 He has a long history of being an arrogant pain in the ass, back in the day he was pretty insufferable. I think he's mellowed out a lot, and considering what he's been through, it's a good thing.
@mrbollocks no, you haven't...this was released on 4Way Street and to my knowledge there is no other studio release of this song and I prefer that version to this as that version captures the times and the spirit in which it was written...enjoy!
The best song CSNY ever did together. One of those few cuts where all 4 were significantly creatively involved on the tune. Stills on lead. Croz and Neil on rhythm. Nash on organ. I love the fact that it was a Crosby song too. Powerful. Ditto for Almost Cut My Hair and CSNY version of Homeward Through the Haze. All Crosby tunes done their best service as CSNY tunes..... Thanks guys!
Yes, thanks for posting. It clears the mind of all the garbage music the "industry" is always spoon-feeding the masses. Music is supposed to be real, and fun for both the player and the listener. And when it is, it's never sweeter. This song is the perfect example.

nice work and great unseen before images
whose guitar was neil playing that he guaranteed not a scratch on it ?
what a great version.
took me a minute to disconnect from my love of the 4waystreet version.
and as soft rock easy jazz as this is david saves it with his voice.
it's as if he asked s,n and y to make it sound like joni mitchell's miles of aisles with tom scott and the la express.
and they could and did.
csny&pr maybe ?

i raised myself up listening to 4 way street, abbey road, a question of balance, green house and steppenwolf live.
saw this tour.
lame. robotic. should have been called the "walking asleep" tour.
('course we were all sleep walking by then.)
had to shout out "play us something we do not know." when graham asked for a song.
he woke up for a minute and delivered pure wild tales graham.
sucky decade.
a neil nash and graham young album in 2012, please ?
