7% of all accidents are caused by "excessive speed" i.e. speeding. Source: HM Government (report TRL323).

The 30MPH limit is arbitrary (thanks thunderbird182 for the level-headed thinking ;)) as is the 70mph motorway limit (which was introduced as an experiment in the 60s - the design speed of a UK motorway is 100mph)

But of course, it's enforced (at least they try to) by flawed speed cameras banned in many other countries like the ill-fated LTI 2020... just another motorist tax :(

Its 30 for a reason....its a round number that seems about vaguely appropriate on urban roads, yet there's no science to it and the maximum safe speed on any given road vary's hugely with the road condition. Yet 30 is enforced, and used in the above propoganda, as this gospel absolute, when it is anything but - which will ultimately lead to a nation of low skilled 'robot' drivers.

All enforced by speed cameras, justified by deliberately misleading statistics. Hooray!
