Buddhism states that it is karmically unvirtuous to eat the meat that was specially killed for you, eating vegetables is most preferable, but if the circumstances lead you to not have any choice in the food, ie hunger or health problem. Then one must consciously take on the suffering of the animals meat, recite mantras and give thanks to it for sustaining your own life. Purity of your intention,action and completion must contain compassion and wisdom in order to consume the meat.

The scientific fact is that vegetables and fruits are difficult to grow on the high Tibetan Plateau which is very dry, arid and has a low oxygen level due to altitude. So animals became a practical source of nutrition. Eating meat is a necessity based on millenium of adaptation to the environment. After Tibet became Buddhist, meat eating was reconciled by a Mayahana idea of Expedient Means.

You can't however, be his follower, and do things he says not to at the same time. I think you raise a good point about vegetarianism, however.

There will come a time when we will look back and see eating animals as horrific. We will look upon such practices as primative beyond belief. The Dalai Lama should be at the front of leading us forward towards a more advanced state of being. He should be helping us to move away from ignorance. There is no excuse for cruelty. In fact, meat has always been a traditional part of the Tibetan diet long before Tibet was ever Buddhist. The scientific fact is that vegetables and fruits are difficult to grow on the high Tibetan Plateau which is very dry, arid and has a low oxygen level due to altitude. So animals became a practical source of nutrition. Eating meat is a necessity based on millenium of adaptation to the environment. After Tibet became Buddhist, meat eating was reconciled by a Mayahana idea of Expedient Means.

I'm afraid that I cannot completely understand how you feel because there is so little dogma of any kind in my life - I am unorthodox in every way; His Holiness would probably tell me that I am not Buddhist but that would be fine with me. What I am is not decided by anyone else even HHDL.

I refer to him as I do because this title reflects the affection and respect I have for him not because I feel I must. I also often namaste because the gesture reflects the affection and respect I have for the divine in all of us.
As for me, I'm not at all convinced there is a creator and, were there one, would be most surprised to find it was a "himself"!

To the ignoramus who posted this piece of misleading trash: The Buddha himself taught that people who lived in cold climates (like Tibet) were exempt from not eating meat. When he came to India, where the climate was warmer, His Holiness began not eating meat. However, many Tibetans including His Holiness contracted hepatitus A. He was ill for many months. His doctors pulled him through, but fearful that the disease had weakened his liver, advised him to go back eating meat. That is the truth.

Honestly, if the Dalai Lama says he doesn't want you to be his follower if you do a certain thing, like worshiping Dorje Shugden, then don't do it, or don't be his follower. Religious freedom? The Dalai Lama isn't oppressing anyone. You are free to practice what religion you want, and the Dalai Lama is not going to try to stop you. You can't however, be his follower, and do things he says not to at the same time. I think you raise a good point about vegetarianism, however.
