i was just diagnosed with a severe B12 defiecient. all my dr told mewas that i have to take a suppliment.. I have been fatiqued and had numbness and tingling in my hands and feet plus depression and mood swings for 10 years. she said i had what is known as pernicious anemia... i know nothing of this can someone help me?
@angelmommy1982 You lack an intrinsic factor for absorbing vitamin B12. You have to take high amounts of b12 for the rest of your life and you should feel much better. It may take up to a year for your nervous system to heal.
I have been diagnosed with B12 deficiency for over a year now. I inject myself every month and will have to for the rest of my life. My doctor told me that if I do not do this I will die.
I first found out I had this when I was 19. A YEAR after I had my first ever blood test and was told that it wasn't anything serious. People put it down to puberty at first since I was 9 when I first started feeling less energetic. It needs more awareness! Especially in younger people like me. Because thanks to this problem I have dulled sensation in my fingertips and stunted growth. And I missed lessons in college because I kept passing out in class.
finally, Pernicious Anemia and B-12 deficiency get some awareness!
it took ~8 years to diagnose my PA--so scary--doctors kept misdiagnosing it as depression. i started out low energy, then staggering like a drunk though i was sober, couldn't lift my arms to drive, ended up bedridden & finally was in early dementia. i have permanent spinal cord damage, neuropathy, severe memory problems still--it could have been worse.
the test is not very expensive! we need more awareness.
Thank you for posting this. I'm currently struggling with a vitamin B12 deficiency. I've had chronic fatigue for a long time but attributed it to my hypoglycemia. A doctor discovered my B12 deficiency but only recommended taking a supplement & eating more animal products, hasn't helped.
I'm getting injections ASAP & have a few questions. Is there any particular type of B12 in the injection form that I need & how soon will it help? Also, can it be prescribed & taken @ home?
I was diagnosed with a b12 deficiency a few months ago, was set up to get the shots and they helped right away. Talk to your doctor about getting the shots because they have worked wonders most of the times. It's a roller coaster ride for sure, some days i feel great but others i just feel as bad as before i started treatment
What you said really echoes with me. I have mentioned to my doctor that some days or weeks I feel just as bad as before I started treatment. Was told by G.P that having the treatment for 18 months. Not very helpful
some patients are able to self-inject at home if their PCP allows. most regiments i read about recommend loading doses to start off and then a regular dose (how often depends on which type of the B-12 you are on.) also most people with B-12 def take a prescription supplement of folic acid to safeguard the spinal cord from further damage. i highly recommend perniciousDOTanaemiaDOTorg (UK site) for helpful info and support

Agree with everyone who said we need more understanding. A lot of doctors don't understand what Pernicious Aneamia means for the sufferer.

I think there is No relation between pancreatic disease and B12 deficiency because it need only interisic factor and ileum to be absorbed

Travisevian - You probably have an R-protein, or intrinsic factor or problem with absoption in the terminal ileum.
Do you have crohn's or some other digestive disorder?
