One of the most "WTH?" things I've ever seen on TV. It's such a trainwreck that I almost think that the whole thing was staged. Even most awkward encounters in real life are nowhere this (near hilariously) awkward.
One of the most "WTH?" things I've ever seen on TV. It's such a trainwreck that I almost think that the whole thing was staged. Even most awkward encounters in real life and nowhere this (near hilariously) awkward.
I actually didn't find this part that uncomfortable at all. I thought it was pretty funny! Look for Shandling's facial expressions when he thinks he's off camera, he's smirking, he loves it!
Not only does GS praise Gervais in a "Legends" British TV Series but its BLATANTLY obvious to me that this ( though unscripted) went well!
Example: He asks GS questions about Jewish humoUr and earlier says "I did not realise you were Jewish!".....its 99.9% certain that Ricky would have known the "obvious" as Ricky has a great knowledge of Comedians and why would he ask him if he did not think he was Jewish himself?..lol
@Isleofskye that wasn't a laugh out loud moment. Unless you find yourself that funny that anything you say is, in your view, utterly hilarious. Or you are just one of those people that put 'lol' for absolutely no reason, just to copy the rest of the pointless population that do this. And that of course was just said by one of the people that copy others by commenting on another comment unnecessarily, because they have absolutely nothing better to do...hmm how contradictory of me...good day >=D
hah "no thats snork" he showed passion and interest in saying that than the whole interview cus he knew the interview had gone to shit due to shandling
If real: no question - Gervais for the win all over the place. But I also think it was a set up - in which case it is ALL Shandling b/c he KNEW that people who think it is the truth would hate him for being such a jackass.
It seems as Shandling is trying to hit Rickkys palm. He's obviously irritated for not being in control of the interview, and maybe thought that he was being laughed at, not with. Well he wasn't, but no he is.
ye i saw that, i think by that point Garry was quite irritated by Ricky's comment. You have to understand that Garry takes his looks quite seriously and he is known for taking plastic surgery. Garry may also have been teased about his looks when he was younger, and Ricky's laugh may have reminded him of those times. Never the less being a "dickhead" is all part of Garry's Humour. Ricky is the type that would make fun of people's looks, including his own, but i guess that got Garry angry
Wow. Ricky's laugh may have reminded him of those times? You're kidding me, right? I mean really, have you ever seen a regular child's face that was so funny that you just giggled with laughter? The same face that turns out to look fairly normal in older age.
Does anybody else think Garry is a cunt? Cause I think Shandling handles this interview poorly. He shows his true colors, as he - very discretely tough - tries to fire back at Ricky. He appears stupid to me, as he insecurely can't take the friendly banter.
@duuuphi Er yeah thats right Garry Shandling, comedy genius and true pioneer of fly on the wall comedy docs is stupid, and Gervais is very clever for stealing Shandlings style in The Office. Oh, by the way, as you clearly dont understand what Shandling is doing here, or who he is and what he has achieved, I was being sarcastic.TWAT!
@duuuphi I don't agree: I just think they both stood up with the wron foot that day.. On another day they might have got on like house on fire... The whole interview got pearshaped after some missunderstandings on both parts!!!
I think this is just two comic geniuses who come at their intellectual comedy from different directions. Shandling is much more cerebral, where Gervais is more improvisational. This is a fascinating discussion with each one honestly trying to describe their sources of humor. How do you describe where you find humor? When directly asked questions about this, each man tries honestly to answer the question. I think the "awkward" moments are just someone actually listening to the other's answer
Couldn't have said it better myself. Both base their humour on the funnyness in uncomfortable situations. The larry sanders show and the office both find humor in the stupidity, awkwardness and other flaws of of real everyday people.... though Sanders is a lot more arrogant in real life and Gervais can laugh as much at himself as others.
This is great to watch whats wrong with a bit of (acted) tension they're both geniuses, watch The Larry Sanders Show clips on youtube to get why Ricky is so infatuated.
bentonnetty and username1194 are the only guys truly appreciating the coming together of two geniuses of the modern comedy age. Anyone who has seen Shandling as Sanders must be able to comprehend this as an improv sketch by to greats. Topstuff. NO the LD/Christopher Guest were'nt of the same kin but just as interesting
I love the uncomfortable/awkward moments between two dissimilar people.I have the same experiences almost everyday and I will quietly think to myself,"I'm having a ricky gervais moment".
Here's a prediction:Even the people who have been in a position to proclaim him as such to the masses are now seeing (or not...)the emperor's new clothes.
Gervais is finished. Don't hold your breath for a "Best Of.." either. Apart from The Office there isn't any "Best Of".
I happen to think Gervais is at least as funny and clever as Shandling. Not knowing Shandling's work well enough, I can't comment on whether he really dislikes Gervais or not.
That 'fucking hell' comment from Ricky when not offered anu coffee proves he was at ease. That isn't something you say when the situation is uncomfortable. The interview wasn't very smooth, that's true. Still love ricky, look at all the brillant things he's done. makes me laugh all the time. I thought that shandling guy maked himself look like a tit
Check out The Larry Sanders Show episodes in my videos, all 89 episodes are being uploaded, up to 26 at the moment, Hey Now.. enjoy the cream of the crop, apparently with the difficulties with obtaining licences from the multitude of muiscal artists that appeared on this show a complete DVD release is unlikely... shame
I dont really understand why people dont like Gervais to be honest, he's alright. If this is faked, it's a bit strange really. If it's real, then why do people go on like Shandling is the better person.
who's saying this was faked? it's just garry shandling being garry shandling. is it just that people here aren't that familiar with shandling? he's dead dry and always acts annoyed. that's his bit. gervais knows that and played into it. you guys really think gervais was all miffed that shandling didn't offer him coffee? please.
It's strange that people like you can't spot Shandling obvious disdain for Gervais' "comedy", and Ricky's discomfort at being around someone that isn't tounging his anus for once.
This show was originally meant to be broadcast on the 1st of June, then mysteriously pulled at the last minute. Six months later its sneaked out behind the much more amiable Christopher Guest interview. That's contractual obligation for you.
Yeah, that must be it. Because I have an opinion different to yours, I musn't know who Shandling is. Rrrrright.
Obviously Shandling is in character, but it's my judgement that he REALLY doesn't like Gervais. Possibly because RG has been ripping him for years, a fact Gervais admitted in an interview.
I'm sure it was a decision made after a lot of thought by Gervais and company.
If it weren't aired, people would *know* Gervais was uncomfortable with the interview, and the ultimate irony of him seeming like David Brent would somehow find its way to YouTube saying "the interview Ricky Gervais never wanted you to see!"
Genius. Every time Shandling made a dig, Gervais tried to cover it with that false nervous laughter, to appear in on the joke. Even though there are people who lap up everything Gervais does, there are conversely others who can't stand this self congratultory tossrag.

Shandling has every right to be pissed off, Gervais goes and insults him in his own home.
"i don't mean to insult you" but then he goes and shows him a picture to add to the insult
Gervais comes across as a complete nasty creep in this, and i think thats the way he in everyday life
