  • Do Not get This Its Shit. :/

  • Mine stopped working after a month, and now is clicking and going BEUEUSZ.. I don't recommend buying one.

  • bcoz computer thinks that 1MB is 1024KB ..so your hard disk has total of 2TB = 2000000000KB . Now calculate !!! your WD says its 2TB, but your computer says its 1.81TB only because both THINKS (Calculates) differently. But I think If you format it to MAC it should says 2TB becuase Mac thinks 1MB = 1000 KB not 1024KB like Windows

  • isn't it easy shooting a video in photo booth..you dnt even need a real camera

  • Does your wd vibrate when its plugged in to a system? And if so is it harmful or not? Thanks in advance.

  • Do you need to install any software for it to work on your PC?

  • @Flizzelz so you're almost 11

  • 40000 Views, Thanks Everyone :D

  • Plase can you help me with the adapter, i don't know which one use useful for this EXTERNAL DISK... 10 WATTS OR WHICH ONE....PLEASE LET ME KNOW

  • how much is the power input ??

  • @masdgunit I'm sorry. I couldn't find the information on the website, and I don't know where my box is (if I even have it anymore). Sorry :(

  • @Flizzelz isn't it written on the power adapter ?

  • Comment removed

  • I love that turtle wallpaper!

  • It's still USB2.0 but they have other products that provides USB3.0 and you can guess that they are much more expensive.

  • Comment removed

  • i goes get it =D man i cant wait xD

  • there is no 190GB taken with something. everything is ok.

  • Mine was 2 TB and it shows all it's Memory

  • jeeze you must have pretty bad eyes if you cant see that

  • Good, it helped me, i was wondering it comes with usb cable or not... thx ;)

  • @djrooli It does come with a USB 2.0 cable.

  • @djrooli But this video is 11 months old so they could have changed it to USB 3.0.

  • @Flizzelz Yes, now USB 3 is avaiable, but they are still expensive...

  • @Flizzelz this doesnt come with USB 3.0 if you want USB 3.0 you must get the My Book Essential

  • @Austin566 it does...

  • @Alexboooom this does not come in USB 3.0. Go look on Western Digital's website or Amazon. There is no option for 3.0 on the Elements

  • @Austin566 why do u stuck on the elements? it does come out with 3.0...what elements or essentials? the point is that it comes with a 3.0 usb support....though it is expensive

  • @Flizzelz does it get easily hot as i read on various forums?

  • @Alexboooom It isn't very hot for me. I keep one side facing an open space, the other is facing the side of my PC.

  • @Flizzelz Unfortunately not, even the 2.5TB version is still USB2.0 which is a real shame.

  • 30,000 views! Thanks! :D

  • Avoid like the plague. I bought two of these on a "Black Friday" sale and one is dead ( can't be read, even after removing from case and connecting directly....scads of read errors) after only very light use. The drives can't breath in these cases and get hot. As most everyone knows, heat is a killer of drives, and this doesn't have a single vent on it. At this point, I am contemplating drilling holes in the case of my other drive to make sure it doesn't suffer the same fate.

  • @SiliconOrb I think you are right on this point. I looked into reviews of this drive and some people mentioned this drive can get pretty warm even when used in relatively cool environments.

  • @SiliconOrb

That defected drive looks to be a (how do you say?) specific of its own(?). It came "dead" so it's a bad experience with it and you can't generalize. I suspect many times of those promotions (b Friday etc) - people say I shouldn't but...

So you say the "breathing is different from others? Aren't there others with the same cooling system? For the price I see it seems to be too good comparing to the other brands 1tb. I was thinking of buying one...

  • Shiny, reflectable stuff, wtf oO called plastic casing. ;)

  • Dude, when you talk about specs for a hard-drive, this usually mean: (1) The Speed (RPM) and (2) The Buffer or Cache size (MB).... everything else is irrelevant. If you want to get really anal, then you mention the noise level (dB) when copying files or playing a movie from it. I mean, who wants to hear a kitchen blender when u r watching a movie?

  • How much did u get it for? And how's the performance ?

  • How's your data transfer rate? Mine is roughly 18MB/s. Solid, I think.

  • It has 1.81T because EVERY company counts 1000 b for 1 kb 1000 kb for 1 mb 1000 mb for 1 gb and 1000 gb for 1 tb, while its actually 1024 b for 1 kb 1024 kb for 1 mb 1024 mb for 1 gb and 1024 gb for 1 tb.

So lets do the comapnys math:

    they think o, we need 2*1000*1000*1000*1000 = 2.000.000.000.000 B to get 2TB.

But thats wrong! If we reverse the math with the right numbers we get this:

    2.000.000.000.000/1024/1024/1024/1024 = 1,81T!

    Thats why its only 1.81TB!

  • This harddrive is really good (better than Seagate 2TB)!! Cache: 64MB, RPM: 7200 and ITR: 480 Mbps ;D and it's cheaper!

  • I decided to buy an iomega Prestige 500GB. It was on sale at RadioShack. Not sure what to do with the WD.

  • if it helps decide whether i should get a warranty for this, i got an iomega 320 gb 4-5 years ago and it still works to this very day.

  • okay i am now convinced to get this hard drive. now should i get it with a warranty? or is this hard drive trustworthy. great video by the way

  • hey, is this FAT32 or NTFS format when you bought it?

  • @Frienever its NTFS

  • I WOULD ADVISE ALL OF YOU ..CAREFUL !!I LOST MY DATA FROM( 4) BRAND WESTERN DIGITAL NEW DRIVES INEXPLICABLY ...IT STARTS CLICKING FOR NO REASON AND THEN DISSAPEARS FROM YOUR ''MY COMPUTER'' WINDOW EVEN WHEN BRAND NEW THIS CAN OCCUR !! ..BEWARE ..I HAD A SEAGATE FOR THREE YEARS BEFORE IT FAILED...I WENT THROUGH 4 (WD) DRIVES 2 MY BOOKS AND 2 PASSPORT DRIVES ALL FAILED EVEN THOUGH I WAS CAREFUL .LOOKS GOOD BUT DOESNT DELIVER ..IT COST ME MONEY AND LOSS OF VALUABLE DATA OF MY CLIENTS .BEWARE

  • @JACKSON2012music I'd you were running all of those drives on the same computer it could have been your computer having issues with having the external hard drives and not the drives themeselves. Im just guessing, I could be wrong though.

  • @Flizzelz Mine seems to have died last night/this morning. Is there no way to retreive the info that was on it?!?!

  • Thank you for your kind response..I ran the drives right after the previous one failed ..It cost me a lot and my data as well !! I do not think it's the computer though, the store where I bought the units had similar issues with other customer...See the web in the number of people complaining about this drive ,my seagate never once disappeared like that for over three years ..Maybe it's just my luck ..That's it for me and WD !!

  • @Flizzelz or not enough power from suply , hdd's can go cabom if that is the case, i had my passport, it didn't work until i put new 650w power suply

  • @JACKSON2012music did you not think to back it up, mr caps lock?!

  • @FuturedaveyP The drive is SUPPOSED TO BE THE BACKUP!

  • @HydrogenInk Well in that case surely you still had the original data- or did this happen at the same time as the drive melt down? Bad coincidence. Not good if it did fuck up on you though of course, its well annoying i know.

  • @FuturedaveyP I had deleted the orginal data, but I was able to undelete it. I guess it's a good thing that you can't really delete anything from a Duo Pro stick.

  • @HydrogenInk can you not? how does that work then; does it not get clogged up and full at some point or other? technology, you could spend a lifetime learning it and another playing with it (the technology that is!!)

  • @FuturedaveyP I made some"deletions" in anticipation of filming something else, but found that the card was showing practically the same amount of remaining space. So, pretty much once it's on there, that's it. It turned out to be a really good thing, so I'm not complaining.

  • @HydrogenInk I got one of these for my dad and myself for macbook music recording. So far so good- love the fact its a massive 2terror bites; i thought my western digital 500GB drives were huge- i hadnt even heard of a terror bite until the other day....or if i had i hadn't ever taken much notice

  • @JACKSON2012music This just happened to me Sunday. I was working on something that was very important to someone close to me. It's all gone now. I will never buy another one.

  • @JACKSON2012music

How can you go through 8 hd's???

It may not be the drives having independent issues, but how your computer is interacting with them... Something you should definitely look into!!!

  • @JACKSON2012music so you have the nerves to tell us you went through 4 WD hard drives before you came to the conclusion it sucked? I guess you deserve to lose the money and data if that's the case.

  • Comment removed

  • @JACKSON2012music hm u sure think u're careful? xPwarranty??

I've got 5 (soon 6!) external harddrives; Iomega Prestige Desktop 1TB, Iomega Prestige Portable 250GB, Iomega Select desktop 1TB, WD Elements Desktop 650GB and WD My Passport Essential 500GB (and I've ordered this [WD Elements 2TB] now) :D and EACH 5 work perfectly!! I've had WD ED 650GB in more than 5 yrs now, and Iomega PP 250GB even longer than that(2 yrs I believe), and they're as good as new!! I've had NO difficulties with them ;D

  • @JACKSON2012music LOL! 4 brand bnew hard drive failures and a broken capslock. Look like you have bad luck.

  • I got one my self and i'm very pleased with it and a good thing about it, is the case don't run hot like some other external HDD's can. Not even after transferring data to it for 15 hours non stop. I'm deffo getting one or two more when I get some dosh.

  • @Hitokiri2000 Yeah it is very good. :D

  • SEE HOW LONG IT LASTS .GOOD LUCK..I LOST DATA FROM 4 NEW DRIVES BACK TO BACK ..CAREFUL

  • excellent external hard drive, best way to go.i love mine

  • more of a demo than a review, so i guess i should say.. nice demo, Flizzelz :)

  • @alphabet222222 Haha, yeah I guess so, thanks :D

  • "Flizzelz" hahahaha

  • That Is a Green Drive In A BLack BoX...... lol funny .....who ever buys this is getting robbed good review

  • @jsnmud Thanks :D

  • hard drive companies haven't learned the difference between 1000 and 1024,

they use 1000 instead of 1024

i think they should switch over to use 1024 because its proper but companies are cheap so there you go

  • dude i need to know if this harddrive is sweet

im about to buy it and wanna know if its worth it because of all my data

is it still working perfect for you after 7 months?

    please reply

  • @megamt Yes it is working fine for me. I can't say that for you or anyone else because it could crash at any moment. This happens with all drives but for me it is perfect and it is a great device overall.

  • @megamt I got it and I have only had it for 3-4 months. It is very slow now and now I can't play games off of it. When I try usually my computer crashes.

  • So, is your drive still working ok? Satisfied with it after all this time?

  • @Trusteft I'm very satisfied with my HDD. It is still working yes and I have never had a problem with it.

  • @Flizzelz Thank you.

  • i have a problem in this item.. when i transfer my files it is too slow to transfer. the 4gig file transfer almost 2 hours. what should i do to this? pls help

  • @touchmeover It is probably either the speed of your computer or the speed of the USB Port (1, 2, 3). You may have a problem if it is your Ex HDD that is the issue. You may have a bad model or something is wrong.

  • @touchmeover must be your laptop, i transferred 13.5gb in 1 min

  • thanks little dude!

  • The reason the capacity is not really 2TB is because the common meaning of the abbreviation TB is TeraBytes.

However, western digital and all the other storage manufacturers mislead the public in purpose by writing 2TB when they actually mean 2 Trilion Bytes.

    So 2,000,000,000,000 Bytes = 1.8189894 TeraBytes

    while 2,199,023,255,552 Bytes = 2 TeraBytes

  • I can't decide, 1TB or 2?

  • @Tecwhizz Depending on your budget, 2TB is recommended.

  • Hmmm... this hard drive or the WD My Book Essential?

  • @jaywongy I think if your going between this HDD and the My Book Essential, and if you are going to buy the 3TB version than the My Book Essential is a lot better.

  • Thinking about getting the 1TB version of this 2TB i will never use, anyone recommend this product?

  • @ben199four I would recommend this product because I have had no problems with it and considering that I have a very small built in HDD in my computer, having this big 2TB HDD is very useful!

  • @rabbitspeedy oh really ok sweet so that will allow me to use it on mac if it has already been formatted or used with a pc? i used my friends lacie external the other day to copy some files and he uses it strictly with his pc and i plugged it into my mac and it showed up and i transferred no problem i was hoping this would be the same with the WD external ?! not sure why his it works with both?

  • what happens when you plug it into a mac after using it on pc? does it recognize the drive or do you actually have to install...? i want to be able to back up both a mac and pc.

  • @toyota1212 You have to reformat the HD, meaning you must erase everything on it if you want to use it with mac and pc. You can use it for mac only or pc only but not both.

  • @Flizzelz Thats not correct at all. If you format the drive using FAT32 like they are when you egt them, then it will work with both mac and pc without formatting or loosing data.

  • @mlykke Ok, thanks. I don't really research that stuff so I'm not very surprised that I wasn't right.

  • @mlykke Mine came formatted in NTFS.

  • @toyota1212 you can install an app on your mac called paragon NTFS for mac so you don't need to reformat the HD.

  • @toyota1212 you don't need to reformat the HD if you install an app on your mac called Paragon NTFS for mac.

  • its because we use the old way of saying 1 gig use to be 1000 mega bytes but in todays world we use 1024MB as a GB so when they say 2TB its wrong but not really? idk if understand

  • drive is junk, broke easily for me, and I a lot of other people. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND GETTING THIS.

  • you have such a sexy voice, would you consider going out with a complete young stranger? and yes I received mine earleir today manned to transfer 190GB within 1hour not too bad.

  • mine stoped working. does let me access the drive. shows up as usb icon underneth but thats all.. :(

  • hello thanks for your vid! i have never used an external hard drive and i have a couple of questions. can this unit be unplugged and detached from the computer only to be used for additional backup if needed? i have tons of pics and vids, can i bring this unit to someone else's computer so they can copy or upload my pics/vids?

    thanks

  • @kishanabear Thanks for watching! For the answers to your questions:

1: Yes the hard drive can be unplugged from the computer whenever you need and yes you can use it for backing things up, unplugging it, and if something goes wrong plug it back in and transfer the backed up file to your computer.

2: This HD can go between Windows OS and Linux OS without having to re-format the HD, however going between Windows and Mac you must re-format. I'm not sure about Boot Camp on a Mac though.

    Questions?

  • the reason for only 190gb is because they calculate it via bytes, and instead of using the computer's system's way of calculating (1kb=1024 bytes) they use 1kb=1000 bytes, therefore 2,000,000,000,000 bytes = 1.81 TB

  • nice review, looking to buy a 2tb hd under £100, and this fits what I'm Looking. Qrestion, how fast is it transferring large files, to the hd, e.g. 1.5gb movie ect. Ans how is it working for you so far, any crashes?

I orginally wanted a 4tb hd, but yikes, they cost over £200, but 2tb should last a while, but mainly want the hd to back up movies, music, ect.

  • does this have password protection?

  • @mabhido No it doesn't.

  • Somethings happened to my 2TB WD... It says that its connected and ready to use on the units tab, but on My Computer it doesnt show up, so I cant access it..... Any ideas????

  • @o7uk Sorry... I cant help you. If I find anything out about this issue I will surely tell you. I think your best bet will be Google searching your issue for forums and such with people having that same issue. Good luck :D

  • @o7uk Try This. Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management . Find Your Drive Then Right Click And Select Delete Volume. Then Right Click Again And Select New Simple Volume. Follow The Directions Of The New Simple Volume Wizard. When It Is Finished Right Click And Mark The Partition As Active. This Will Delete Anything On The WD External HDD But Might FIx Your Problem.

  • @mongy211 Thanks, but I have a lot of important things on my HD that won't fit on my computer HD. It is fine anyway because it is just how the computer reads the space, not actual space being taken up.

  • what is the function of ac adapter....

can anyone x'plain for me please...

  • @mhazmi2009 The HDD doesn't get its power from the USB connection. A USB gives a VERY TINY amount of power. A real HDD like this on needs much more than what a USB can supply. Maybe 100 - 150 Watts.

  • @Flizzelz it's a 1.5 TB WD green WD15EARS they use 8-32watts of power o7uk right click on computer click manage wait for it to open click Disk Management and look for it the partition might be corrupt or not active this can happen and is do to a FW glitch with WD green drives last bit of info Drives are sold on a base of 1000 to 1 computers count at 1024 to 1
  • @mhazmi2009 It is means we cant use HDD without the adapter...

  • Comment removed

  • why does it need a power port?

  • @Meioh1 It is probably so that it does not rely on the consistent power of the computer in case something goes wrong with the USB ports.

  • @Meioh1 Most external things that are connected by USB have an external plug.

  • @Flizzelz was aksing since my current one (reason why looking at buying this) doesn't have a power port, just the usb, so do you need to charge this?

  • @Meioh1 No, you don't need to charge it. I think it is for backup power just in case the USB port stops working and your using the hard drive. This way none of your work should get lost.

  • uh... stupid it is only 1.89TB because the people that make them measure GB as 1024mb which is correct. computers measure it as 1000mb per GB.

  • @nickrev1994 Actually it is because my computer measures it in Tebibyte and not Teribytes which is what the manufacturer programed it as.

  • @Flizzelz

Actually its because of the file system NTFS takes a portion of the drive when its formated.

  • @Flizzelz it doesnt really matter what your computer thinks, formatting play's a role in the size too...

and I think it's computers that see HDD's as 1024=1GB and manufacturer rate it as 1000MB=GB, because with computers everything based on 8's, i could be wrong though...

  • @bobdotexe

    .

You're completely right and I dunno why would anybody be confused about that !!!

computers compute 1 GB as 1024 MB not 1000 MB

so any 2 TB HD is 2000000 Bytes which the computers will show it as 1.81 TB

    Nothing confusing about that

  • @Perscriptions Um... Thanks, I guess.

  • When u hooked it up to ur mac did you format it clean (even though it came out of the original pack?) or u just plugged it in and it was ready to go?

and it doesnt have 2tb?? I was thinking about partitioning 1tb for windows and 1tb for mac??

  • @meerak87 Sorry, but I don't own a Mac. However from what I have learned if you want to hook it up to a Mac from a Windows computer, you must re-format it (delete everything one it). If you are only going to be using a Mac with it then I believe it is fine and you just plug it in, install and it should work perfectly. Windows (which is what I have) uses tebibytes, which are a much older/different way of measuring devices with on-board memory, however it does have 2TB, and will say 2TB for Mac.

  • hey how do u like it so far? will it work with macs?

  • @meerak87 I really love this hard drive, mainly because it is so sleek. Yes it will work for Macs, in the video I said that it requires reformatting for Macs. What that basically means is that if you want to move it from a Mac OS to a Windows OS you have to erase everything on the hard drive. So I would recommend that you get another hard drive for a windows computer if you want to.

  • Comment removed

  • @meerak87 I really son't back up my computer too much (ikr, stupid) and always keep it plugged into my computer so I can't help you too much, sorry.

  • does the hard drive still work? i have heard that these drives just stop working after a certain amount of time that's why i am unsure to buy it or not.

  • @HUYI1 Yeah! It totally works. I have had it for 9 months now and there has not been a single problem with it. I think it is a VERY good buy and recommend it over any other 2TB External Hard Drive.

  • @Flizzelz ok thanks for your feedback i will consider it.

  • Just an update of what HD is used in this... found the info "The 2TB drive used in the current shipments of this product is the "older generation" Caviar Green WD20EADS. This drive has 512-bit sectors and does NOT need to be specially re-formatted (using WD Align) for WinXP. The "new" 4Kbit-sector WD drives are the "EARS" series."

  • @SIXSPEED69 WOW! Thanks for that! I will include that in an annotation!

  • Do you have to plug it in to the wall?

  • @Saggmos95 Yes, there is a plug that goes into the wall a USB cable to connect to the computer.

  • the reason why there is "only" 1.81 TB on the harddrive, is because of the difference of the abbreviations TB and TiB. You have 2 TB, butt 1.81 TiB.

    just check google

    type: gb vs gib

  • @emperorraj OK, not I get it. Thank you very much! :)

  • @Flizzelz

    no sweat! ;)

  • I got USB flash drive (it says 16Gb but it has only 14.99GB)

  • @zuja59 The reason this is, is because your computer is using tebibytes to measure the flash drive. It does have 16GB except it is measured by your computer in tebibytes. So, there is 16GB, it just doesn't show it.

  • @emperorraj On snow Leopard it shows 2TB left, because OSX 10.6 uses true Terabytes and not the ancient Tebibyte

  • Yo can I have the icon or the golden Mario Mushroom logo?

  • @oLACHESISo You can have the golden mushroom, however which icon do you mean?

  • @Flizzelz The Fizzelz Channel logo-2 at 5:56

  • Ohh, thanks for explanation.

  • Would you know what hard drive it uses? the caviar green? 5400rpm drive? can't find info on it.

  • @SIXSPEED69 I can't either. However it is very quite and doesn't have fans. I isn't an SSD. It is probably some sort of WD drive. Sorry. Good Luck! Thanks for the comments and questions, if you have any more questions feel free to ask and I will hopefully be able to help. :P

  • So does this HD turn off when the pc is turned off? and on when on?

  • @SIXSPEED69 I checked just now, and yes it is off when your computer is off, and on when your computer is on.

  • @Flizzelz Thank you for that..... needed to know that before I buy it.

  • Btw, that realy sucks that they robbed you of almost 200gb !!!! I mean if it was like 5gb, that's 1 thing , but almost 200gb ???!!! There are some pc's that don't even come with 200gb in their hard drive !!!! It's like you said, A CLEAN DRIVE !!!! They should advertise how much space is available to you b/c that's what most people think when they hear 2tb, that i have 2tb of space i can use !!! Why tell me about 200gb that i can't use !! Still for $112 and 1810gb i'll still probably get 1.

  • Does anybody know if it gives you the option of putting a password on this when plugging it in in order to protect your documents, music ,info ,pics, movies etc just like in windows vista user account setup????? Any help would be very much appreciated, b/c i know more expensive wd external drives do like passpot, essential ,mybook elite or whatever but what about this one???

  • I would have liked it if you had stuck to reviewing the device. Plugging it in and showing the device on would have helped a lot. Thanks anyways. I gave you a thumbs up.

  • the reason why it doesn't really have the full 2 "TB" capacity is the way they compute it's capacity. If you buy a 2 TB Harddrive you will get 2,000,000,000,000 bytes capacity. In Windows and Linux (Mac changed it a while ago) it will show you a capacity of 1,862.64 GiB or 1.82 TiB. Notice the term GiB and TiB! These are the units in which computers compute a file size or capacity in the opposite to the way hd manufactors do it. Search Tebibyte in Wikipedia for further informations.

  • @55arrow WOW! Thanks, that was very helpful.

  • hi men...you know how to play ur drive on TV?...using DVD player? help me plz... i said to my mom that its afordable and it can be played on our DVD..huhuhuhu

  • @bjornbarney I dont really think you can use your external hard drive on your dvd player. It uses USB 2.0 as I said in the video so I think what you have to do is connect your computer to the tv and then connect your hard drive to your computer then use the tv as your computers monitor. It is all very confusing but I don't think you can hook up an external hard drive to a dvd play, there is no menu anyway.

  • #LOL You said it's 'SLIM'
