Nice video. The trains will only operate fast if they are running late. If on time there is no need to drive fast. They are more powerful than other Electrostar units because of the gradients.
All nice and new but the trains are annoyingly slow, not being put to full use. Am too used to Tube like acceleration and braking. Or perhaps I just got on one with a lazy driver who was really crawling! They take forever to pull into a station, etc.
@BROADTRAIN1979 Too right they were, the other day I went from Stratford to Gunnersbury, first time I've used the line since the Woolwich section closed and I was not impressed with the LOL 378's :(
Great to see my old neighbourhood. I lived in Haggerston between 2000-2005 and found it hard to imagine how the new extension would look when it was done. Now I can see here before I go back to London. Now everyone can easily get to Viet Hoa on Kingsland road rather than fight your way on a bus from Livvy St.
@ingravegreen - Short sighted 1980s railway closures! You would of thought they would have learnt lessons from the 60's and 70's regarding closing railways but is was still happening in the 80's although these closures are not as well documented as ones from the previous decades. Good examples of 80's railway closures was Elmers End branch, Elridge to Tonbridge Wells, The Woodhead Route. Other branches that lost rail services in the 60s and 70s but the rails remained were ripped up in the 80s.
I think the East London line is a fantastic piece of railway. Especially the reopened section between Shoreditch and Dalston Junction. At 6.02 - The last remaining section of viaduct not in use to the old Broad Street station, with old tube trains in situ!
These trains are weird they are like normal surface trains laid out inside like tube trains.
This line is supposed to be getting extended out to clapham junction but with the coming budget cuts and expensive projects getting axed i can't see this happening unless the funding is already in place.
@jack253 originally the EL was going to remain with the LU, and have a similar arrangement to parts of the Metropolitan, Bakerloo, and District lines with tube and suburban sharing tracks. But someone decided that would be too complicated. But you'd be able to tell a train's destination (sort of) by its color. When the line was renovated 1995-1998, supposedly it became capable of running Networkers, wonder if they'd have painted some mainline stock in LU livery?
@simpletimes222 im talking about the gradient markers, the white posts and boards with two numbers on them. they havent been used on railways for decades but the ELL's littered with them!
looks empty. when is this recorded? (day and time)

what's the signalling technology? I can see a central comms cable, but it doesn't cross back and forwards so I think it isn't SelTrac.
neuralwarp 1 year ago
@neuralwarp That's not a central cable. That's just to do with the trackbed. These use bog standard NR signalling - hear the AWS chime.

@chelseamrb65 The funding is already there, the extension is already appearing on platform maps at Highbury & Islington and other stations.

why is there such a tunnel, above ground? is it to decrease the noise?
Stefkarl 1 year ago
@Stefkarl The station will become part of the Bishopsgate redevelopment, new buildings will be build around it and on top of it

Its interesting that Surrey Quays seems to have gained a very large and prominent gradient indicator next to the roundel - i wonder why?
Christopher125 1 year ago
@Christopher125 The gradient is at Shoreditch High Street.
