How great is Patrick Stewart in this scene? It could very easily have come across as silly, but he makes this breakthrough in communication with these aliens convincing.

Speaking of Riker as Captain remember in "Rascals: when he was in command and the mighty Galaxy Class Enterprise was easily disabled by two old beater Birds of Prey flown by the Ferengi no less. I don't know what was more embarrassing, the Enterprise getting off one phaser shot or Worf's epic miss at point blank range when they are boarded. At least the Tamarians had superior technology.

Trekkie here. The FX team at the time admitted they made a mistake and fired the phasers from the photon torpedo bit on the ships neck. That gun on the neck of the ship has been the photon torpedo since ST:WoK. So... yea, just a mistake on their part. Retcon a phaser coming out of a torpedo tube all you want it still doesn't make it so. ;)

Tamarians were barbaric? I don't remember that. Maybe their decision was a bit harsh, but considering their great technological advances and the fact that they were interested in making peaceful contact with the Federation I wouldn't consider them barbaric.

Damn u peoplejust want to get cussed out! Jordy diverted power to the photon torpedo launchers because that enabled them to get more juice out of the phaser u idiot! The Tamarian shields were powerful and it required a stronger phaser blast. Dont test me...i watched the first episode of start trek tng in 1987 and i saw the last episode in 1994. I know every nuance of this show.

Yes there was a language barrier but they were still barbaric people. The tamarians were the aggressors by beaming picard off his ship without consent. They could have tried another way to negotiate. Ryker and co were only trying to recover the captain.

listen jackass ive seen every episode..multiple times..it was not more powerful dumbass..again..listen.....the enterprise diverted phasers to penetrate one part of their shields just enough to locate captain picard on the planet for a rescue operation. Again..ryker was not trying to destroy them. Dont try my star trek knowledge..i wrote the book buddy. All is said was if ryker hadnt stopped to beam up picard he could have kept firing and destroyed the tamarian ship...they were evenly matched

Oh god..here we go again..the Enterprise did not want to destroy the tamarian ship...just to weaken its shields...Ryker could have kept firing and firing before the tamarians could respond but that would have destroyed the tamarian vessel. The Tamarians were more rutheless and just wanted to clobber the enterprise. But in the end..Picard saved the day..i luv him.

@rocco24a You need to watch the episode again, the tamarian ship was much more powerful than the enterprise and would have destroyed it if picard hadn't able to communicate with them. It was all a misunderstanding and each side thought the other had attacked first when in fact they both wanted to find peaceful communications. Know what your talking about before making stupid posts.

@ElensarFFXI They diverted phaser fire to the torpedo launcher to strengthen the phaser blast enough to penetrate the tamarian shields without outright destroying the tamarian vessel. The Enterprise crew was ingenious and always found ways to improvise and improve their defenses. Unfortunately the Tamarians were not as good hearted the enterprise crew.
