I've seen this movie at a rather difficult time in my life and it touched me in a way like nothing before. The calmness of the scenes, the minimal but heavy dialogue, the camera and the vast amount of symbolism bring it out as more than just a movie. It's a movie few people will hear of, and even fewer will appreciate it, bury it somewhere deep besides their heart and carry on with it throughout their life
I'm going to watch "Stalker" for the first time this weekend and, based on this and similar clips, I assume I'm in for quite a moving experience! Already a longtime fan of "Solaris"....
@KNIEBEL0815 people have different meanings for what they find boring. the road was powerful. what i don't understand is why people were so mad w/this film. what do you think would happen if there was a major catastrophic event? there would be huge homemade machine robots walking the streets? look around you. the everyday human isn't born a super genius engineer/welder etc. we would be alone, and lonely. with only the will to survive for our loved ones. you think that is boring?
this movie is fantastic, i was glued to the screen, the pacing was so unique and consistent, the beautiful composition was inspiring, and the story felt like a childhood imagination's pretend time adventure.
I loved this film in the 80's and I love it now .Powerful and profound in so many ways .Excellent . Everyone must see the full length ,it will grab you and will stay in your mind for always as it has mine : )
The book is about no nucliar waste zone . Its about some alines coming to Earth and having a picnic (well sort of). They left some interesting artefacts, that for them is just junk something you will leave after leaving your camp site - basicly junck. But to the people of earth thouse trivial things are a mistery and whit a high tech and mytical value. And the please when thouse aliens had their picnic was celled the zone - full whit strange by our earth perspective things.
@BGSlopy And thats why the novel is called "Picnic near the road" "Пикник на обочине". While the stalkers "сталкер"(single form in russian) are the scavangers who explore the zone. The word is russian and it comes from the word столкнулся which means in loose translation to come across or to confront. So in loose translation stalker - a man who is "confronting" the zone.
In the light of His presence "the deeds of each will be revealed". I will see how I have exalted myself over my brothers, considering my worldly power something that I deserved. When I see the suffering that I ignored and the insignificance of my worldly accomplishments, how can I bear to stand all illuminated?
More evils upon them, O Lord. More evils upon those who are glorious upon earth.
Many people have commented that Tarkovsky's film foreshadowed Chernobyl, but it was not shot in the Ukraine. The film was shot in Estonia near Tallin when Estonia was part of the USSR.
you are correct about Estonia, the film is only losely based on Roadside picnic, which was influenced by the Tunguska explosion in 1908 Siberia when 80 million trees were flattened, was it a meteorite, space craft? who knows. Stalker is a great film, you need to feel to understand, sadly some people can"t think for themselves!
stalker was made in 1979, chernobyl was in 86, this film is about the meteorite that hit siberia, also about mans desire, his dreams etc.. do some research, you have a computer or are you too lazy!
i posted a question not a statement. I have done plenty of research, i know all about the ideas behind the film. I know all about chernobyl and that stalker was made 7 years before the reactor incident. I had read that even though the film and the chernobyl incident are totally independant the film had been shot in the area of the ukraine surrounding the reactor and that it had actually appeared in a background shot towards the end of the film. So thankyou for being a Self righteous asshole!
yea, Tarkovsky is a genius. The game was great too, but this movie is not based in Chernobyl which means the game producers mixed the story line with the Stalker movie but kept most of the important element of it in it which is great. and ima get Roadside Picnic i wanna see how it relates to Stalker.
I disagree. Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl based on Roadside Picnic. And this film is very very alternate version of that book, and I even think it doesn't have the same meaning. But still, movie is awesome, my most favorite of all. Book was awesome too and the game is also very very good. So two thumbs up for all this Stalker thing.
is based of both, but the directors of the game mixed it with the events of chernobyl, thats what i was trying to say lol, sorry. but its pretty obvious, and yea i know about road side picnic im reading it right now.
Ingmar Bergman (a famous swedish director) said of him: "Tarkovsky for me is the greatest [director], the one who invented a new language, true to the nature of film, as it captures life as a reflection, life as a dream"
It's about this place called "The Zone", This zone if full of traps and physical anomalies, so these three people, one is the stalker who leads them to a room where wishes come true.
The Oscars were always like that. The real problem is that studios in America don't even try anymore, because they know whatever they make, people will mindlessly come to see it or the Oscars will pour awards onto them.
I think its sad that worthless movies such as "Titanic" that are nothing but fancy pictures and silly over reacted Drama gets 11 Oscars! And great movies from REAL Artists like Tarkovsky or other artists who are from Russia, Europa or the Middle-East dont get that much of attention. Pure sad that lots of people dont look to the old Art of movies anymore and that the great prices go to shit movies. Just reason why I say that Oscars are nothing but a golden **** these days.
I think part of the reason is because most people don't tend to think when they go to watch movies, intellectuals find movies such as stalker interesting but the rest just want to see explosions, we are a different crowd :)
@Buzzoro Titanic doesn't make Stalker any better. You don't need to diss a movie to elevate another one, that's just bad logic. Just the notion of a movie like Stalker being mainstream (that's what you are asking for) is absurd.
@kadgi Dude, I posted this comment here years ago (and kinda forgot about it). Just like the comment I made at Nostalgia. I was way more hot-headed back then and this comment is kinda outdated. Today, I dont give a shit what's mainstream or not (nor have I ever). Titanic is a decent movie and I should've kept it apart from any Art movie, and I apologize for breaking this one great rule. Now I foccus on whatever attracts me, raither then pointing at something I dislike. Opinions change, dude.
L0L, nope? Think over it again dude, the game is based on the novel and the movie too...I bet you didn't read the book so you can see the similarities
In terms of using film as an artistic visual medium, Tarkovsky is the greatest director. But check out Theo Angelopoulos also - The Drowning Meadow available on DVD.
they share similar themes, setting, environment. even many of the little insignificant details, like the character's nicknames and the bolt-throwing made it into the game.
It almost seems like they kept the same "Zone" from the movie, but put it in Chernobyl and changed it's inhabitants to better fit a video game. There aren't any crazy mutants or soldiers in the movie...
you must listen or read this text from the apocalypse in greek-in which it was written-to understand its full beauty.watch also the sacrifice of tarkovski, his last film
This movie is a available on netflex. i recommend it. It provides a completely different experience while watching it than other movies, but its really powerful, and seems to have aged well, the cinematography is a lot like todays, and the sound is great, acting too...
the film as the video game both base on a book of brothers Strugatzki: Picknick am Wegesrand (I only can write the german title for I don't know the title in english and can't write kyrill letters with my tastature).
An incredible pan - what I'd love to know is the degree of intentionality in its composition - every iota of flotsam seems pregnant with significance.
Does anybody else see a LOT of Tarkovsky in Peter Jackson's films, most notably Lord Of The Rings? I never really cared For Peter Jackson but I LOVE Tarkovsky and I have been noticing this more and more as I watch both of their films
