  • Did PAul Macartney really say that? I'm with Paul.

  • F A N T A S T I C ! the guy is a (relatively ) unrecognised genius. Prefab Sprout achieved 10% of the success they deserved.

  • Has anyone found a better song than this? I sure haven't. This was pure magic when I was a teenager and it still is now!

  • Thank you YouTube for bring Prefab Sprout to me!!

  • Another song that reaches emotions very few songs do...it's a rare talent that can do this...why can't the world recognize it?

if she came to buy him now, how cheaply he'd be sold

    what a great line

  • Another song that reaches emotions very few songs do...it's a rare talent that can do this...why can't the world recognize it?

  • Prefab Sprout made many beautiful songs, and this one is My favorite.

  • Great song... A voice that melts the soul

  • Prefab sprout - Genius

How can you put the smiths, house martins, james be put into the same category as Paddy Macloon? He writes better lyrics than any of those bands. He is the most modest and self-depricating artist ever. And you can never piegon hole him. Look him up in his interviews - he never takes himself too seriously.

  • one of my favorites

  • 4 people never had the stars to let them go

  • fantastic track !.......brings back wonderful memories of the 80's

  • Paddy Joe.....Paddy Joe.....don't you remember me?

  • I fondly remember all the women who shared sweet time with me. Thank you with all my heart. Very very romantic song. This was big in the Philippines in the 80s. :)

  • my parents used to listen to this.. and i would be all like turn this crap off but deep down i also really enjoyed it.

  • "If she came to buy him how cheaply he,d be sold " ........great line !

  • prefab pop perfection sprout

  • Along with big country ,prefab sprout are one of the most underated bands ever.

  • 'Looking for Atlantis' was a song rather than an album. It was the first track on 'Jordan: the comeback' one of my top 5 albums ever.

  • The most romantic song ever recorded?

  • i love this song so...

  • 切なすぎて泣けてきてしまう。

    今でもときどき車のなかで聴いてしまう一曲です。

  • When studying at JMOORES Uni, before staying on to live in Liverpool, this song reminds me of walking the city and the friendly nature of the locals.

  • A grey old man of 46 and still this song brings tears to my eyes. simply beautiful

  • I remember my sons (they were 2 and 5 back then) shouting "Paddy Joe!" on the back seat of the car.....

  • I've heard the LP a million time back then...

  • I just heard it for the first time and it's really really good. Thanks for the link.

  • Simply gorgeous

  • Such talent, a beautiful song.

  • For me & always the song sings the song however looking at this video on u tube it is obvious at the start that these people are real friends.

The song sings in beautiful melody to anyone with a heart.

Warm inviting , inspiring ,disappointing & aspirational anticipated lyrics with a dream induced harmony.

It is the first time i have heard this song ever. So good i have just bought the album. Thanks You tube & paruomax for allowing me to catch up on my past ,a real gem of a band.

  • "how long ago one gorgeous night ,

we let the stars go free

how long ago one stupid night ,

we let the stars go free"

    Love it.

  • this song will always remember me that perfect night at the seaside. Thank you , Karina, whererever you are.

  • Hello, magnificent and wonderful song and unforgettable band, thanks, bye.

  • By the way, football fans, SLB means Sport Lisboa e Benfica. Do you remember Eusébio??? ;-))

  • But U2 and Coldplay also performed and created gr8 songs. Don't forget Bono Vox first started his carreer in 1978...and that Chris Martin is from a different time, on a crazy era. Coldplay is a commercial band, but also good, I think. About McAloon's drift away...well, he's not alone. He isn't the only one "forgotten"... So many talented guys from the New Wave days just disppeared...Good old times!

  • What happened to Paddy McAloon? It's incredible to see someone remembering him after so many years, bringing along fantastic memories...How I used to laugh each time the portuguese national tv showed "King of Rock and Roll" videoclip on one of the Top of The Pop shows!!! Sunday morning, I believe...

  • How can bands like U2 and Coldplay (!) justify accepting loads of money and accolades for the crap they put out when Paddy McAloon toils in obscurity with more TALENT and creativity and heart than they'll EVER have! If they (and all the other hack bands out there) had any integrity, they'd listen to this song and QUIT!

  • couldnt agree more pal spot on !!

  • This is one of those songs that remind you of why you fell in love with music. The man has a voice like Islay malt whisky, he rips the words out of my heart and has a simply beautiful way of delivering the melody. Why can't anyone do it these days???

  • This song made me dream (and sometimes cry) when I was young. Love it.

  • Well he needs to start off with small audiences and gradually work his way up. This song is very meaningful to me as well but holds no personal meaning other than the line "There was a boy I used to be I guess that he was cold. If she came to buy him now, how cheaply he'd be sold." Brilliant and yet deeply saddening.

  • I agree. Poetry. This is lyrically fabulous. Pure poetry.

  • Wonderful stuff..emotional and uplifting.Paddy is a true genius...they never got the recognition they deserved. Please tour again Paddy..we love you and miss your talent man.

  • This is the saddest video they ever made. It feels like their swan song. They'll never be that young, beautiful, and together again. I guess we were blessed to have them for the short time they were together, just like the Beatles.

  • The Sprouts haven't played live for years. Maybe they never will again as Paddy is too nervous to sing to an audience these days (so he said on the radio last week). New album out 8th September though! Please tour again guys. I miss you!

  • 1:20 - 1:35

Believe it or not. This is the most romantic guitar solo I've ever heard.

  • Serious I would like to book these guys to play for me live.......this is amazing.

  • This song had no bearing in my life..but I`m so emoyional attached to it for some reason....amazing track.brilliant...they were an amazing outfit...

  • "Jordan" for me is the soundtrack to that heartbreaking transition year where college ended and working life began. So many great memories....

  • I love this song, what an amazing piece of writing.

  • what year was this released, was it around 92/93?

  • Second single from Jordan The Comeback . 1990.

Saw them at Oxford Apollo that year and Paddy joked that Newcastle United let their stars go ( Gascoigne)

  • 1990

  • All of the Sprouts' videos are rather silly, aren't they? No matter -- their work is timeless, and Jordan: The Comeback is the finest album of the past 40 years. This is a superb gem of a song from a great composer. What's not to like?

  • Aye, shite videos; extraordinary songs.

  • 9th of september 2009 is the supposed date of the new album. Can't wait. I hear their music and I'm back in the day. Now I'm here and they're not I kind of feel they were years ahead of themselves. What a band.

  • are they still playing live , i have most of their music starting with swoon on tape but dont remember them playing ireland.

  • They haven't played live for ages. There is however a new album in the making

  • They played the Olympia in Dublin around 2000 (October I think) was the last time. I was at it. I saw Andrea Corr come out of the gig with beau in hand. Great gig. They didn't dissapoint. No Wendy though.

  • I adore Prefab Sprout! Jordan the Comeback is one of the best albums I have ever heard! I've played it millions of times over and this song I sing at the top of my voice! It's so beautiful, the song, not my voice.

  • If you like Prefab Sprout, try searching DEAD LIKE HARRY - SATELLITE for a new band you might like.

  • The BEST song from one of my favorate bands ever! Long live Prefab. Can't wait for the new album this Summer!!

  • "Fan the embers long enough I'd sometimes catch her flame", "If she came to buy him now, how cheaply he'd be sold", "what used to be the sky, is suddenly embaressing to the naked eye". So beautiiful and poetic :-) x

  • Mc Caloon est vraiment un mec à part pour ses mélodies. Toujours cette profonde richesse mélancolique, toujours ce truc qui fait mouche. Vivement un nouvel album, ce groupe devient trop rare...

  • what a ridiculously melodic tune! they dont come like this very often anymore

  • beautiful!

    i love prefab sprout <3

  • I agree. Very sensitive, I think Paddy's voice is truely unique, so classy, they have their own rich sound. Paddy you are true inspiration to songwriters of today.

  • paddy mccaloon .....what a writer of the most wonderful music and lyrics

20 years later these songs still fill me with emotion

  • When I first heard this I had to buy the cassette for my car. I was visiting friends in Leicester at the time and I saw it in a newsagents of all places. Played it all the way home.

Every track on this album is a classic.

  • What a beautiful, amazing song. It touches the soul. Paddy is a genius.

  • Yes. I just played this song for my wife and she loves it. It really does touch the soul. Peace and blessings.

  • @nigetheonion no matter how much destiny dictates your suppose to be together with the one you truly love reality kicks in and tears it apart because of unforseen or forseen circumstances and thats why sometimes true lovers have to let the stars go free ... absolutely beautiful tune

  • @nigetheonion The band met in a college...not a million miles away from here...

  • A masterpiece! And the unmistakable fingerprints of Thomas Dolby!

  • Prefab Sprout

  • Excellent song

  • The music still sounds like magic 20+ years on. I loved this album. It was pure magic

  • I'm floating over my living room right now!....Bless Prefab Sprout! *****

  • im hearin you.....

many people would have that one perfect memory...

that gorgeous night... sooo long ago... so close.. if only.... now freeeeeee...

  • This tune makes me cry.

  • Well, 'I couldn't bear to be special' must be one of the great songs of all time. Lyrics like that don't get written very often.

"Words are trains for moving past what really has no name" Paddy must have been reading Gregory Bateson......

  • i post "the mystery of love" on youtube, hope the fans liked

  • Paddy is brilliant, the album are all magnificent, my songs are always a lot of course, but here's some: 1-Cars and girls 2-Carnival 2000 3-Mystery of love 4-Nightingales 5-Bonny 6-Whoever you are 7-Starlet nights 8-We let the stars 9-Knock on wood 10-Pearly gates
  • the song of my life.

  • Il passato non si può recuperare......

  • ooh beautiful lyrics! and it's easy to understood with Japanese. THANKS!

  • kinda trippy all of their stuff fkin great

  • cant wait 4 the new album feb 09

  • Brilliant song writer, shame the videos don't really cut it. S'pose the vids dont really matter, but compared to a lot of their contemporaries PS got the short straw when it came to directors. The songs deserved better.

  • magic song

  • The hairs on the back of my neck are tingling, one of the most beautiful songs ever written and sung like no other, the harmony of Wendy's voice and Paddys could never be matched, Although the Carpenters come close!! but thats another story.

  • i love it too.

  • I played this LP a million times back then!.....

  • Paddy McAloon fantastic songwriter and band.

This kind of talent couldn't be afforded by the devil..

  • love the mellow voice of Paddy McAloon..

  • Beautiful...

  • Thomas Dolby was behind this band...

  • And this song...so marvelous...

  • Prefab Sprout was an underated band never getting the credit they fully deserved. I remember the songs growing up were so much better, Prefab, housemartins, James, Deacon Blue, and who can forget the Smiths.

This album, looking for atlantis was brilliant! thanks for the post

  • i agree....prefab and the housemartins are the two most under-rated bands of the 80's.

    this is a fantastic song...off a a great CD...that was supposedly a 'concept' album....whatever that means.

  • @shuyuyu Did you know that behind this band was Thomas Dolby?

  • @shuyuyu I ABSOLUTELY AGREE

  • Je suis d'accord avec toi frenchjipouille, nos origines plus ou moins latine nous font aimer cette belle chanson, aussi je comprends pourquoi beaucoup de français aiment Préfab! Belle ballade musicale!

  • Used to play it over and over back in 91.Pure as a cloudness sky...

  • He is just recalling a brief affair wistfully and with some regret.

Paddy is a Criminally underrated songwriter.

His peers are folks like Leonard Cohen and Cole Porter.

  • Pretty bold statement....Cole Porter.. One of the greats. This is lyrically as good as anything out there. Just beautiful poetry. Wonderful...as good as anything Porter ever did.

  • Well said. Paul McCartney has said McAloon is Britain's most undervalued songwriter. How right he is.

  • Une signature lyrique inégalable. L'une des plus belles chansons des Sprout. A quand un nouvel album?

  • Can someone explain to me the song?

  • try listening to the lyrics!its about an affair or fling he had a long time ago.

  • I'm french sorry. What is an affair or a fling? A love story?

  • A fling is a love affair that doesn't last long, and maybe isn't so serious.

  • Ah ok. And in the case of the song Paddy would have liked that this love affair lasts longer?

    Sorry for my poor english.

  • dont worry about your english, about the song, its not exactly that paddy wanted the affair to be longer, but that time later, he asks himself what would have happened if he had gone on... I think thats the beauty of what the songs talks about, not even knowing if we took the right or wrong decision, and still wondering... beautiful, isnt it?

  • Beautiful but painful...

  • brill song

  • what a voice! i remember it growing up!! (born 1984)

  • This song is magic!

  • This song is very very fantastic, i like Prefab sprout!!!

  • fantastic songs by a fantastic band, martin was my tutor for a year! sweet as!

  • This song and video have influenced my life so much...

  • its becoz yer a big softee

  • i like this song alot, not sure why tho? cause i usally listen to rock music and stuff :S

  • Maybe because it simply is GOOD...?!

  • i like this song alot, not sure why tho? cause i usally listen to rock music and stuff :S

  • Absolutely gorgeous song.

No doubt about it, Prefab Sprout sure knew how to put a song together.

  • Poetry. Just an amazing lyric. Beautiful. This is what art is....savor it people. We don't see the like of this very often.

  • was 19 working in a shitty hotel doing double shifts in a one horse town got prefabs tape greatest hits got me through that summer 1991 wow seems like yesterday what an album

  • If you like prefab buy all there albums tomorrow and get Lewis Taylor aswell, hes in the same league and music of this quality is whats right in life, pay for quality, not crap

  • Effing brill.brings back loads of memories for me...Neil Conti grooving like a mutha! and being a Gretsch man for years you gotta know hes serious, one of his best drum tracks for me, Dolby production etc stunning, wendy beautiful, bass player bloke rules the band and is understated top man allround kingpin, for me he probably is the superglue of prefab.

  • One of the best and most "beautiful" songs of the past 20 years!

  • Why the hell haven't Kitchenware, or whoever, released a definitive DVD of all Prefab Sprout's videos?

    Criminal.

  • yes, not only a great songwriter but an incredible sound engineer

  • keith at hmv metro centre always said that prefab sprout wers a poor mans Deacon blue - completely ignoring the fact that they were going about a decade before ! This is one of my favourite songs off Jordan - only "one of the broken" betters it - it's no "wages day" tho' (the power of sarcasm)

  • Thank you!!! I'd never seen this, and the Japanese parallel text was a special added bonus for me!!!

  • Ridiculously underrated.

  • I love this one!

  • Such a great song, from a beautiful album Jordan The Comeback....Paddy is one of the best songwriters ever..brilliant stuff!!!
